Girl Meets Boy

New Prince-Inspired Sheila E Single Features Brent Fischer Orchestra

The music community is still stunned over the loss of Prince. This past week, his long-time collaborator and friend, Sheila E attended a session at Sunset Sound   for her upcoming album titled Girl Meets Boy. Inspired by her loss, Sheila E. tells the story of the first time she met longtime collaborator and former fiancé Prince in her newest single, arranged by Brent Fischer, featuring the Fischer Orchestra.
Girl Meets Boy offers uptempo tracks and ballads influenced in some ways by the pair's relationship and "driven by the sense of loss that so many are feeling," said Sheila E. in Billboard. Sheila E. owned the stage as a drummer and percussionist. But her career took an exciting turn when she met Prince backstage after a gig. Their friendship eventually led to Sheila E. lending her vocals on Prince's song "Erotic City"- a move that prompted her to launch her own solo singing career.
"It's emotional being back in this room. I did my first session with Prince here (Erotic City).  And now I get Fischer stings on my tribute song to him (Prince)," says Sheila E. "Prince's influence is very much here. It permeates on Girl Meets Boy. After hearing the song, the arrangement just flowed. I'm so honored to have been part of this," says Brent who along with late father, Clare Fischer has a long working history with the legendary artist.
Girl Meets Boy is beautiful ballad Sheila E and guitarist, Mychael David wrote together.  Get your tix for Sheila E Tour beginning July 2.

BETTERMAKER C502V 500 SERIES At AES 2015
Trans Audio Group Introduces the Boutique Analog Compressor

TransAudio Group, Bettermaker's U.S. distributor, introduced the path breaking Bettermaker C502V at the AES's 139th Convention earlier this year in New York City. Like the rest of Bettermaker's catalog - which in just a few short years has earned numerous TEC, Resolution, and Prosound award nominations and wins, the C502V combines a boutique analog signal path (newsworthy in its own right) with intuitive, musical controls and complete parameter recall and automation from a linked DAW-based plug-in - high-end analog sound paired with a superior digital workflow. The C502V is the first compressor from Bettermaker, although with three distinct VCA flavors in one 500-series chassis, it could just as easily be described as the first three compressors from Bettermaker! Stereo, dual mono, or M/S modes, as well as USB or analog side-chain with adjustable high-pass filtering and "look ahead" functionality expand the C502V's universe of possibilities.

Gate your tracks and unlock your mind with this useful, incredibly innovative and creative tool.
This incredible plugin does everything you ever wanted a delay to do, as well as a myriad of things you never imagined a delay could.

Bettermaker, the Poland-based maker of high-end analog equalizers with plug-in control and recall, earned two nominations: one for the Bettermaker EQ502P 500 series module and one for the Bettermaker EQ232P MKII rack-mount.

Drawmer's 1978 Tone Shaping Compressor, which incorporates different analog character circuitry and variable saturation, and Tube-Tech HLT 2A, which pairs high and low shelving with an innovative "tilt" midrange filter, earned nominations as well. Finally, ATC earned a nomination for the ATC SCM45A, three-way compact near-field monitor with unparalleled midrange fidelity. The winners will be determined by online voting via Mix, Pro Sound News, Pro Audio Review, and Electronic Musician and via professional audio and sound production organizations.

"All of these nominations go to inventor-owned companies, the kind of companies where innovation is king. We're proud to have these exciting new products recognized with TEC Award nominations," said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. It's easy to imagine that there's nothing new under the sun in the world of pro audio, or that anything new is a gimmick, but that's simply not the case. The sound quality of Bettermaker's equalizers would have earned TEC nominations by itself, but the fact that their fully-analog circuitry can be recalled and automated via a plug-in interface has obvious advantages in a modern workflow. The Drawmer 1978 and the Tube-Tech HLT 2A prove that traditional compressor and equalizer topologies are not the only way to inspire fantastic mixes. Taking a different tack, ATC's SCM45A gives engineers a beefier three-way ATC nearfield with fidelity that ensures mixes will translate outside of the studio. Obviously, we encourage folks to cast their votes for these innovative tools!" adds Lunde.

A Revolution in Music Listening
Choosing High RES

High Res Symposium at Capitol Studio A, June 1, 2016              Photos: studioexpresso

Capitol Studios hosted a symposium on Hi-Res audio on June 1.
Efforts are being made to enable music enthusiasts to experience recordings the way the artist intended.  The press-only event was sponsored by the Recording Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing, Universal Music Group and Sony Electronics.    Mainstream download sites are taking notice of high-resolution audio's growth, and that's music to the ears of audiophiles and manufacturers alike. The growth of high-end headphones for mobile use will encourage high-res music listening on mobile devices because they let consumers hear the difference!

The Magic Bus parked outside Capitol Studios with a Sony Rep inside Capitol Studio A
during High Res Symposium, June 1, 2016

Sony electronics displayed its various consumer toys for High Res - speakers for home theater to headphones and smart phones -
in the main room of Capitol studio A where a
panel of audio professionals praised the format.
Nate Albert, Capitol's VP of A&R, talked about how big labels are happy to get behind this initiative which will expose consumers to the benefits of Hi-Res sound. "I share artists' goal to deliver authenticity in music," said Albert.
Look for high res releases from Beck and Ryan Adams.
Jim Belcher, technology and production VP at Universal Music Group, agreed that high-resolution audio chips in smartphones will help improve the listening experience. He also noted how this along with ancillary album information will add to the consumer experience. Currently  HD Tracks, Blue Coast Audio, and Pono are among sites that offer quality content.
P&E Wing's Maureen Droney honored Capitol Studios & Mastering with a Certificate of Appreciation. Studio manager Paula Salvatore and Arthur (Art) Kelm, Vice President, technology, general manager, accepted the document.
Inside the control room, engineer Steve Genewick let us compare
sounds of Vinyl, complete with hiss and pops, to two-dimentional CD, MP3s and finally High-Res in phat spacious 96kHz or 192kHz at 24-bit. The Beach Boys and Sinatra sounding like the day they were recorded. Ah!!!

Then it was time for us to step outside and get into The "Magic Bus," Jon Whitledge's lifetime masterpiece!   Whitledge Designs combines modern day scientific and engineering techniques with "old world" craftsmanship and critical listening skills to turn your dreams into reality.
Also known as "The world's best car stereo" by Robert Harley of The Absolute Sound (Dec '08 & Sept '11), the Magic Bus' 4,620 W, 3,100lb audio system, with 54 acoustical treatments, took over 6-1/2 years to design, build, and tune.  It features statement-level products from Dynaudio, Cascade Audio Engineering, Kimber Kable, WBT, and Genesis Car Audio Amplifiers.  Finally, the Magic Bus is the only audio system in the world with more than 200 autographs of famous musicians!

RIP Vincent Amaury van Haaff
1952-2016

Principal of Waterland, Vincent Amaury van Haaff dedicated his life to design. He spent a large portion of his time in Los Angeles building recording studios for customers in LA, Tokyo, Milan, New York, and Sydney.  Vincent's philosophy is best summarized on his website:
"It is our opinion that sound and the acoustics of music have left an incisive mark on the history of architecture and habitable space engineering.
On the journey from the medieval cathedral to the modern-day music  recording studio, millions have
perceived the art of sound reproduction through a constantly evolving process of replication. Through this process, music has become a universal language and a vanguard of the impact that sound reproduction will have on the future of mankind."

Van Haaff's mark (design) remains on many legendary studios in Los Angeles like The Village, A&M, Sony Music Studios (Santa Monica and NY), Conway and Capitol.
A touching memorial celebration was held in Vincent's honor at Village Studios earlier this month attended by his family and friends. An emotional slide with photos and original music was offered by his friend, CJ Vanston.
David Goggin added his tribute with a bronzed wire sculpture of Vincent (left).
In the end, it's the experiences that we share that resonate with people and what's left behind is one's oeuvre
Social networks lit up with sentiments for Vincent this month.  "
You are kind, funny, considerate, opinionated, unique, and had more heart to spare than anyone I've met....Love you Vincent!!" wrote Rafa Sardina

Zenon Schoepe
-  April 10, 2016

"In a year where we seem to be losing all the greats," said a PSN Europe post about the late executive editor of Resolution Magazine (born of the closing of Studio Sound in late 2001) Zenon Schoepe who is survived by his wife, Susan Schoepe, daughter Olympia, son Florian, father Bogdan and sister Bozena. "If Zen were here to speak, it is very likely that he would tell you all how much you have enriched his life, inspired him to achieve at a high level, and that Resolution is just a reflection of the innovation and greatness that comes from you all," said his wife, Susan.  "He was generous with news from my clients. We had a nice exchange when I pitched and secured cover stories for Rafa Sardina and Ken Allardyce. Thank you Zenon. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Long live Resolution."  Let's support editor, Nigel Jopson +44 (0)7985 154548 and keep his legacy alive.

Teens Stay Above the Influence  (ATI)
Through the Power of Music

Sirah had been on her own since the age of 15, had lived in garages and Los Angeles's Union Station, and had used "anything and everything" before getting sober. Although she had a few years of recovery under her belt, she was struggling to make a living in the music industry. Finally, Sirah reached the end of her rope: She was sick, unable to pay her rent or fix a broken refrigerator, and she was losing friends to addiction. That's when MusiCares "basically saved my life," she says.

This month marks the launch of the seventh annual GRAMMY Foundation® and MusiCares® Teens Make Music Contest, in conjunction with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids as part of its "Above the Influence" campaign. The contest asks young musicians, ages 14-18, to compose or create an original song and/or music video that celebrates life above the influence or brings attention to the real-life consequences of substance abuse. "the Teens Make Music Contest serves as a great vehicle for these young musicians to highlight why they choose to live their lives in a healthy and positive way," said Marcia Lee Taylor, President and CEO of the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids.  The first-place winner will receive two tickets to the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards®, two tickets to the GRAMMY Celebration®, The Recording Academy's official after-party, a cash award of $500 provided by Visions Adolescent Treatment Center, and the opportunity to perform a set at the Acoustic Tent on the 2017 Vans Warped Tour in the city closest to their hometown.

RIP Bernie Worrell
4.19.1944 - 6.24.2016

Dr Bernie Worrell, keyboardist for Parliament/Funkadelic and Talking Heads and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, passed away Friday following a battle with cancer. He was 72.  Dubbed the "Wizard of Woo," Worrell is credited with giving the funk outfit their futuristic sound. On Worrell's official site he says: "So, if I'm playing a horn arrangement on keyboard, or strings, it sounds like strings or horns, 'cause I know how to phrase it, how a string phrases, different attacks from the aperture for horns, trumpets, sax or trombones."

Gaga Lama
A Call for Kindness

A video of the 19-minute encounter - in which Laday Gaga and the Dali Lama pondered issues such as meditation, mental health and how to detoxify humanity - was posted on the singer's Facebook account.
The meeting sparked an angry reaction from Beijing, which has attacked the spiritual leader as a "wolf in monk's robes".
The Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in March 1959, insists he is merely seeking greater autonomy from Chinese rule for Tibetans.
In a 20-minute Q&A, Gaga asked His Holiness a series of questions chosen from social media about how to deal with injustices in the world
