ATCs IN THE RING WITH CREED

Creed is the seventh installment in the Rocky series. It's been a knockout in the box office, and critics are raving about the movie's refreshing exploration of new territory - while remaining true to the series' roots. Indeed, Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Rocky Balboa, his first Academy Award nomination since he was nominated for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay for the original Rocky. Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (below) wrote the musical score for Creed and veteran audio engineer Chris Fogel (above) recorded and mixed it. Although Fogel brings a well-curated and diverse set of professional audio engineering tools to bear on everything he works on, his reliance on the TransAudio Group-distributed ATC SCM25A Pro near-field monitors and A-Designs Pacifica mic preamps and A-Designs Reddi DI is notable and exemplified by Creed's astounding recording.

Göransson composed Creed's score on ATC SCM25A Pro monitors, which dovetailed nicely with Fogel's use of ATC monitors. Without question, Fogel made sure ATCs were present at every session. "ATC's reliable clarity, spatial imaging, and clean, extensive high-end are remarkable," he said. "When I listen on any other monitor and then come back to the ATCs, it's like someone took a blanket off of things. A cloud lifts, and the ATCs reveal everything. That makes me work harder, but in a good way because I know it means I'm actually getting everything right. And once it's right on the ATCs, it translates to every other loudspeaker." Fogel asserts that ATCs are becoming the monitoring standard in the world of audio for film, and whether a studio has ATCs is one of his first questions. "If they have ATCs, great, I know anything I do on them will be correct; otherwise I know I have to bring my own," he said. Between his Glendale, California-based Hyperion Sound and the composers of ELBO Studios, Fogel and his associates have three pairs of ATC SCM25A Pros in constant use.

Although Fogel calls on the Pacifica preamps when he's mic'ing a bass instrument, he used the A-Designs Reddi DI for the orchestral basses and for electric basses in the non-orchestral sessions for Creed. "Last year, we did a DI shootout with the amazing and popular LA-session bassist Michael Valerio," he said. "We had a half-dozen of the most respected DIs in the industry. We worked with acoustic bass, which is one of the toughest things to get right in a DI. With everything else, we could clearly hear that the top end was being pinched or folded in - and that effect ranged from horrible to acceptable in the different DIs. But the A-Designs Reddi destroyed them all. It wasn't subtle at all. The Reddi's top end was open and clean; nothing else could hold a candle to it! Of course, the Reddi shined on Creed."

BETTERMAKER C502V 500 SERIES At AES 2015
Trans Audio Group Introduces the Boutique Analog Compressor

TransAudio Group, Bettermaker's U.S. distributor, introduced the path breaking Bettermaker C502V at the AES's 139th Convention earlier this year in New York City. Like the rest of Bettermaker's catalog - which in just a few short years has earned numerous TEC, Resolution, and Prosound award nominations and wins, the C502V combines a boutique analog signal path (newsworthy in its own right) with intuitive, musical controls and complete parameter recall and automation from a linked DAW-based plug-in - high-end analog sound paired with a superior digital workflow. The C502V is the first compressor from Bettermaker, although with three distinct VCA flavors in one 500-series chassis, it could just as easily be described as the first three compressors from Bettermaker! Stereo, dual mono, or M/S modes, as well as USB or analog side-chain with adjustable high-pass filtering and "look ahead" functionality expand the C502V's universe of possibilities.

Julius Dobos:
 Remembering The Future
Plug Me In

Hungarian-American composer Julius Dobos is best known for his electronic, psybient, ambient and early electro-orchestral music releases worldwide, and for his music produced for major motion pictures, such as "You Don't Mess with the Zohan", "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and television programs (DragonBall Z, NCIS) in Europe and in the United States.
With eight album releases, including a platinum album and the popular "Mountain Flying", he became the first Central-European composer of large-scale electronic/orchestral music to receive international attention. Under his moniker forgotten future, Julius is currently working on a four-part concept album series, with the first piece being released in 2015. While most describe his music as "organic electronic", Julius never fails to surprise his worldwide audience with melodic approaches and uniquely designed sonic textures, which guarantee a musical experience that is well, out of this world!

Bettermaker, the Poland-based maker of high-end analog equalizers with plug-in control and recall, earned two nominations: one for the Bettermaker EQ502P 500 series module and one for the Bettermaker EQ232P MKII rack-mount.

Drawmer's 1978 Tone Shaping Compressor, which incorporates different analog character circuitry and variable saturation, and Tube-Tech HLT 2A, which pairs high and low shelving with an innovative "tilt" midrange filter, earned nominations as well. Finally, ATC earned a nomination for the ATC SCM45A, three-way compact near-field monitor with unparalleled midrange fidelity. The winners will be determined by online voting via Mix, Pro Sound News, Pro Audio Review, and Electronic Musician and via professional audio and sound production organizations.

"All of these nominations go to inventor-owned companies, the kind of companies where innovation is king. We're proud to have these exciting new products recognized with TEC Award nominations," said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. It's easy to imagine that there's nothing new under the sun in the world of pro audio, or that anything new is a gimmick, but that's simply not the case. The sound quality of Bettermaker's equalizers would have earned TEC nominations by itself, but the fact that their fully-analog circuitry can be recalled and automated via a plug-in interface has obvious advantages in a modern workflow. The Drawmer 1978 and the Tube-Tech HLT 2A prove that traditional compressor and equalizer topologies are not the only way to inspire fantastic mixes. Taking a different tack, ATC's SCM45A gives engineers a beefier three-way ATC nearfield with fidelity that ensures mixes will translate outside of the studio. Obviously, we encourage folks to cast their votes for these innovative tools!" adds Lunde.

The Tec nominated Auratone Super Sound Cube reference monitor is a legend in the recording, broadcasting, and motion picture industries for its unfailing ability to represent mixes as they will so often appear in the "real world" - on small-format, zero-crossover loudspeakers.

LA Artists Making Buzz At SXSW
Avid Dancer Jacob Dillian Summers, better know as Avid Dancer, is not tall and skinny like your average rock star. Raised in a cloistered Christian home, Summers started out as a drummer without a single secular influence.
He went on to grab top honors in one of the world's biggest drumline competitions, found himself a home with the Marines and at last moved to the west coast with dreams of becoming a rock star. He released his first song titled "Stop Playing With My Heart" in 2013 and hasn't stopped since.  People sometimes compare him to Morrissey. Summers describes his music psychedelic pop. We found it to be far more alternative pop rock. Just listen to "I Feel It." Summers opens for bands like Warpaint and has a record deal with Grand Jury, an imprint from Fat Possum.  Jacob has a relaxed style and outlook on life that's simply contageous like his music in "Stop Playing With My Heart."

Corners Meet the Corners: Racy Bryant, Billy Changer, Jeff Ertitti, Cobian Suelo. Their East Coast + Canada Tour starts on April 30th. Sorry we missed your February concert and super limited glow in the dark t-shirts at The Teragram Ballroom, LA!

Casey Veggies is an American hip hop recording artist from Inglewood, California. At the age of 14, Casey Jones, better known by his stage name Casey Veggies, released his first mixtape. Since 2007, he has released five independent mixtapes under LA clothing and management company Peas & Carats. His most recent mixtape, Fresh Veggies, was released on December 16, 2013. His debut studio album, Live & Grow, was released on September 2015.

Dead Sera Singer Emily Armstrong and Siouxsie Medley front Los Angeles' Dead Sara - an electrifying four-piece rock band that includes bassist Chris Null and drummer Sean Friday. Medley's monster guitar riffs and Armstrong's  wailing vocals. Dead Sara has continued to earn the respect of some of the biggest artists in rock and roll over the last two years. In an interview with Fuse in 2013, Dave Grohl simply stated, "Dead Sara should be the next biggest rock band in the world." Dead Sera has great live reviews too, including their appearance this month at SXSW. During their 2013 U.S. tour with Muse, Chicago Music Monthly stated that "Dead Sara is an example of everything that is right with rock and roll. Last December the band toured UK and Glasgow, Scotland. Dead Sera invite you to join the Dedicated!

The Two Tens You may have heard "Sweet As Pie" on an episode of Shameless!
After releasing two EPs of hyperkinetic power-pop, singer-guitarist Adam Bones and drummer Rikki Styxx headed to SXSW from LA to show off The two Ten duo with a debut of a three-song outing titled "Volume 1."
Nothing over-thought or overwrought here: The Two Tens serve up lightning-quick garage rock that turns the clock back to first-wave punk.

Experience Binaural

Binaural experience is at ceter stage again, largely due to popularity of virtual reality games. Imagine. Listening to an album by your favorite band and feel like you're with them in the studio or in the front seat of their concert.
Hear a bird flying over your head or hear a whisper in one ear. And if you record a band, you'll hear it exactly as the band was positioned when playing. In 1933, AT&T Bell Laboratories brought binaural audio to the Chicago World's Fair. The acoustics research department of the company created a mechanical dummy, which it named Oscar, with microphones placed on its cheeks in front its ears. For decades, binaural recording was a novelty, but with the rise of virtual reality hardware like the Oculus Rift, Sony's Morpheus, and Samsung's Gear - systems dependent on realistic 3D audio to fully immerse their users - binaural audio is on the cusp of a renaissance.  Radiohead did it in the studio. Tom York playing piano in the studio just for you! Watch Beck concert (David Campbell directing) reimagines David Bowie's 'Sound and Vision'
Binaural recording systems are unique because they emulate the workings of the human head. The architecture of our anatomy dictates how we understand the sounds we hear: with an ear on either side of a thick skull and spongy brain, we hear sounds enter our left and right ears at different times. Binaural recording takes the stereo method one step further by placing two microphones in ear-like cavities on either side of a stand or dummy head. Because the dummy head recreates the density and shape of a human head, these microphones capture and process sound exactly as it would be heard by human ears, preserving interaural cues. The effect is best experienced over headphones, with a clear distinction between left and right perspectives. It's a simple concept, but when done with high-quality microphones and played over equally high-quality headphones, the effect is eerie: it fools the brain into believing it's hearing the sounds firsthand. After years in the trenches, mic'ing orchestral instruments this way and that, Fogel finds that his recordings work best when he lets the orchestra do its job. Although he is careful to include necessary spot mics, most of the sound that makes it to the final mix is coming from room mics on the entire orchestra or on individual sections. Given the fact that relatively few mics comprise the lion's share of the sound, the mic selection and signal path is critical. For Creed, Fogel used two 2-channel A-Designs Pacifica mic preamps for the percussion section and part of the brass section (which are, incidentally, the best brass recordings he's ever made by his own judgment!). "The A-Designs Pacifica is a unique beast, and it would be one of my 'desert island' picks if I could only have a few pieces of gear," he said. "The Pacifica is excellent on instruments with a lot of attack, and it really gets the meat of an instrument."

 Featured Hammond Artist

Los Angeles based Kyle Flynn is a professional pianist/organist and touring member of the band Father John Misty, his relationship with keyboard instruments has had it's ups and downs. His mother might tell you that as a child, Kyle had to be dragged kicking and screaming to his classical piano lessons. Kyle is not proud of this. In his defense, his favorite band at that particular time, Metallica, didn't feature a lot of piano.  Eventually he made a deal with his parents: if he continued with piano through the 9th grade, they would help him buy an electric guitar (preferably one with cool-looking, pointy ends). So, Kyle stuck it out - and he actually took it seriously. Because if there was one thing he hated more than being forced into piano lessons, it was public embarrassment. And since group recitals were part of the lessons deal, Kyle had to practice... a lot. Finally, Kyle hit high school and dropped the piano like a bad habit. Soon, he was having a really nice time playing guitar in bands of various genres all over Seattle (where he grew up). But, he began to notice something: there were a lot of really, really good guitar players out there. Like, an excessive amount. You couldn't throw a rock without hitting someone shredding. (Kyle would like to point out that he's no slouch on the guitar either). He also began to notice something else: people kept asking him if he could play piano. So, Kyle, having taken intro to econ. in college and thus understanding (sort of) the properties of supply and demand, began playing a little less guitar and a little more piano. Then, even less guitar and even more piano.
Until, one day, much to Kyle's surprise, he was touring the world with a diverse assortment of bands on big labels like Columbia Records and Universal... and he was playing keys. To top it all off, while Kyle was opportunistically filling the Seattle rock scene's piano player void, he had slowly but surely fallen in love with anything that used black and white keys to make noise. The only person more shocked by this flip flop than Kyle was his mother (who still shoots Kyle "I told you so" looks every once and a while). If his parents were so on point re: the piano, what else could they have been right about?
So, to summarize: in one of life's many ironic twists, Kyle has kept a roof over his head for the last decade by playing (and loving) the very instrument he vehemently shunned as a child. He still likes Metallica though.
Kyle is a big B3 fan and has found the Sk1 an incredible boon to his touring setup as it is extremely portable and sounds like a million bucks. "It's truly a pleasure to have Kyle in our Hammond family and support his keyboard needs," says Nelson Dodge of Church Keyboard in Monrovia.
