An American Epic with The Americans at Prairie Sun

In 2011 The Americans performed at the wedding of Reese Witherspoon and
Jim Toth, accompanying the newlyweds' first dance with a rendition of Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love." The Americans' music is featured in the Michael Mann-produced film Texas Killing Fields, starring Sam Worthington and Chloë Moretz. The soundtrack includes two original compositions by the band, "Kiss Your Eyes" and "When The Blaze Is Blue." In 2013 The Americans performed on the Late Show with David Letterman in support of their appearance on Hal Willner's Son of Rogue's Gallery (ANTI Records).
The band is also featured in American Epic, a new PBS documentary about early field recordings in America.   The special is, produced by Robert Redford, TBone Burnett and Jack White. Watch the interview with Mark "Mooka" Rennick at Prairie Sun Recording where the boys talk about how they got involved with the film and more...

John Rodd To Mix and Master with ATCs
Original Score for EA STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT™ VIDEO GAME

Players of EA Star Wars: Battlefront hear Haab's original score throughout most of the game, but the game also segues in and out of parts of John Williams' legendary Star Wars film scores. John Rodd (Eric Clapton, Breaking Bad, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Elysium, Batman: Bad Blood, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed) had to make sure that Gordy's original score would fit with the older film scores from both a technical standpoint and, more importantly, from an emotional standpoint. "To fit within the Star Wars universe, Gordy Haab's music had to sound lush and huge, exciting and dramatic," Rodd said. "The recordings took place at Abbey Road's largest studio, and part of my task was always striking the perfect balance between the room mics and the spot mics. If only the room mics were utilized then the music would sound too far away. The spot mics add presence and detail, but if they become too loud, the recording loses its grandeur and falls out of balance. It loses its depth."
Rodd emphasized that his cinematic and gaming work takes a different mindset compared with that of a classical recording that is meant to stand on its own. It has to effectively coexist with dialog and sound effects, which require different considerations. "I had to think about the big picture for EA Star Wars: Battlefrontª," he said. "Clarity is paramount. A lot of my work involves tiny surgical adjustments to clear away frequencies that are masking or diminishing important elements. Getting the right balance of clarity and size is difficult, and it requires profoundly accurate monitoring."
He continued, "I find that my ATC 150s are very revealing and honest. ATC is legendary for its midrange quality, and I rely on my ATC 150s to help make all the tiny sonic decisions that add up to a compelling mix. They're brutally honest, which is a good thing! If something actually sounds glorious, then it will sound glorious on my 150s. If something is slightly amiss, it will sound wrong on my 150s. There's no guessing; ATC gives me the whole picture. Moreover, that truthfulness guarantees that a great sound in my studio will translate well to any other system. As a result, I'm able to work with 100% confidence."

Note:
Abbey Road Studios sport ATC SCM25A Pro monitors in their control rooms.  You could say this historic rooms have the pulse on innovation and cool gear.
ATC is a story about innovation. It's about one man named Billy Woodman, who spent his young working life as an engineer working side by side with the greatest speaker engineers of his day. Billy would go on to found ATC, Acoustic Transducer Company in England, to try and keep the ideas and the inventions coming when the rest of the industry decided it wanted to cut costs instead.

BETTERMAKER C502V 500 SERIES At AES 2015
Trans Audio Group Introduces the Boutique Analog Compressor

TransAudio Group, Bettermaker's U.S. distributor, introduced the path breaking Bettermaker C502V at the AES's 139th Convention earlier this year in New York City. Like the rest of Bettermaker's catalog - which in just a few short years has earned numerous TEC, Resolution, and Prosound award nominations and wins, the C502V combines a boutique analog signal path (newsworthy in its own right) with intuitive, musical controls and complete parameter recall and automation from a linked DAW-based plug-in - high-end analog sound paired with a superior digital workflow. The C502V is the first compressor from Bettermaker, although with three distinct VCA flavors in one 500-series chassis, it could just as easily be described as the first three compressors from Bettermaker! Stereo, dual mono, or M/S modes, as well as USB or analog side-chain with adjustable high-pass filtering and "look ahead" functionality expand the C502V's universe of possibilities.

Read the PlugIN interview with Andrew Scheps where he explains enhancing guitars with vocal tools, saturating single frequency bands and the plugins he grabs when a mix needs some extra love.

Music producers are faced with an increasing number of details as they set the course and steer artist development at labels and independently.  The world- class panel presented by PlugIn Alliance, Trans Audio Group and studioexpresso featured: Peter Asher (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell)Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Melody Gardot, Herbie Hancock) and Rafa Sardina (Placido Domingo, Estopa, Katherine Jenkins).

They offer a high IQV (integrity, quality and versatility) and they also are experts at mixing what I call ATCs (art + technology + commerce),"  says the presenter Claris Sayadian-Dodge who co-moderated with Brad Lunde of Trans Audio Group.
studioexpresso also presented a panel on Orchestrating A Jazz Session with Luis Conte (Dave Mathews Band, James Taylor, Clare Fischer), Brent Fischer  (Usher, Elvis Costello & The Roots, Michael Jackson) and  Al Schmitt (Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan)

Songwriter Spotlight: J Ralph
His music has sold more than 10 million records worldwide, reaching the No. 1 spot on the billboard top 100 charts in over 22 countries. His professional career began as a teenager and was quickly signed to Atlantic Records in one of the biggest deals ever granted to a new recording artist.  Founder of music production company The Rumor Mill, J Ralph is THE "go-to producer of documentary film scores" and by Indiewire as "Perhaps the best documentary composer working today." Over the last 7 years, J. Ralph has written and produced the music for 6 of the Oscar® winning/nominated films including MAN ON WIRE (2009), THE COVE (2010) HELL AND BACK AGAIN (2012), CHASING ICE (2013), FINDING VIVAN MAIER (2015) and VIRUNGA (2015).  For his contribution to Chasing Ice, he received an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song with "BEFORE MY TIME" performed by SCARLETT JOHANSSON and JOSHUA BELL.  In the history of the Academy Awards®, it remains one of only four songs from a documentary ever to be nominated for an Oscar®.
Ralph produced the 2014 Oscar® nominated song "THE MOON SONG" performed by Karen O and Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend while accompanying the duo on guitar, from the Academy Award winning film HER directed by Spike Jonze.    Ralph's studio "The Theater" (by appointment only and not open to the public)
is one of the last grand recording spaces left in the united states at 10,000 sq feet with 50 foot ceilings.  It has several recording rooms all custom built around rare collection of vintage recording equipment, microphones and instruments, all of which which make up one of the largest and rarest collections in the world.

Bettermaker, the Poland-based maker of high-end analog equalizers with plug-in control and recall, earned two nominations: one for the Bettermaker EQ502P 500 series module and one for the Bettermaker EQ232P MKII rack-mount.

Drawmer's 1978 Tone Shaping Compressor, which incorporates different analog character circuitry and variable saturation, and Tube-Tech HLT 2A, which pairs high and low shelving with an innovative "tilt" midrange filter, earned nominations as well. Finally, ATC earned a nomination for the ATC SCM45A, three-way compact near-field monitor with unparalleled midrange fidelity. The winners will be determined by online voting via Mix, Pro Sound News, Pro Audio Review, and Electronic Musician and via professional audio and sound production organizations.

"All of these nominations go to inventor-owned companies, the kind of companies where innovation is king. We're proud to have these exciting new products recognized with TEC Award nominations," said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. It's easy to imagine that there's nothing new under the sun in the world of pro audio, or that anything new is a gimmick, but that's simply not the case. The sound quality of Bettermaker's equalizers would have earned TEC nominations by itself, but the fact that their fully-analog circuitry can be recalled and automated via a plug-in interface has obvious advantages in a modern workflow. The Drawmer 1978 and the Tube-Tech HLT 2A prove that traditional compressor and equalizer topologies are not the only way to inspire fantastic mixes. Taking a different tack, ATC's SCM45A gives engineers a beefier three-way ATC nearfield with fidelity that ensures mixes will translate outside of the studio. Obviously, we encourage folks to cast their votes for these innovative tools!" adds Lunde.

Auratones Make A NAMM Debut!

Perfected by Jack Wilson in his California garage in 1958, the Tec nominated Auratone Super Sound Cube reference monitor is a legend in the recording, broadcasting, and motion picture industries for its unfailing ability to represent mixes as they will so often appear in the "real world" - on small-format, zero-crossover loudspeakers. At this past AES Convention in New York City TransAudio Group relaunched the Auratone Sound Cubes. And now they are making their NAMM debut. And what's more, Auratone will be inducted into the TEC Award Hall of Fame at this year's show. We couldn't be prouder for our new line! Learn more here

Sundance Music Sampler Via ASCAP Cafe
Music and film go together like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. For 18 years, the Sundance ASCAP Music Café has celebrated this timeless alliance by bringing live music to the heart of the Sundance Film Festival. Here's a short sampling from who will be playing today, Friday Jan 29.

Genevieve  began as the singer in the rock band from Chicago, Company of Thieves. When the band ended Genevieve wasted no time getting to work on new material. The result is Genevieve's debut EP Show Your Colors - a triumphant collection of songs that focus on the power of celebrating one's true self.

With his unforgettable melodies and stories spun out by disturbing, compelling narrators, Freedy Johnston was soon mentioned in the same breath as John Prine and Randy Newman. Johnston's most recent album, 2015's Neon RepairmanProduced by the legendary Butch Vig (Green Day, Nirvana), the album wooed radio listeners with its hit single, "Bad Reputation."

Thirteen years since they first began playing together in their native Oklahoma,  Other Lives (Jesse Tabish, Josh Onstott and Jonathon Mooney) ventured westward, settling in Portland, Oregon to record Rituals, their hypnotic new album.

January Giants RIP
David Bowie . Natalie Cole . Glenn Frey ...

Glen Frey gave us Hotel California. David Bowie imagined life on Mars and made us dance and Natalie Cole was simply unforgettable.  We also remember
Pierre Boulez, classical composer and conductor, Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister, and  Paul Kantner, founding member and guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and Starship.  The music world has lost a long list of giants this month.
Isolar, singular, larger than life, these artists moved their generation and likely future ones to come. Their music will always be in our hearts, and on our playlists. They were reliable narrators who mixed art, sound, pictures, dreams with human mischief, grace, and fun. They lived and moved.

His autobiography, Bowie, Bolan and the Brooklyn Boy (Harper Collins UK) is an evocative overview of Visconti's life, musical beginnings, and adventures in London with David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Thin Lizzy, Paul McCartney, and more.
Angelique Kidjo's Djin Djin album earning Visconti his first Grammy for Best Contemporary World Music Album.

Little Simz, 21 UK

Hip-hop superstar Kendrick Lamar says Simz "might just be the illest doing it right now."
He may be right. Her debut album, A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons, out last year; the song "Dead Body" (a mediation on humanity's inherent imperfections) peaked at No 10 on the Billboard and twitter Emerging Artists chart. This month she's listed with 30 under 30 at Forbes.  The Award-winning North London born rapper and musician who has made her mark on a global scale with a series of critically acclaimed mixtapes and EPs, earning her global accolade as she soon became tipped to watch by the likes of VEVO, Red Bull, and BBC amongst many, landing her nominations for a bevy of awards including BET, MOBO and Worldwide Awards (where she scooped up the Breakthrough Artist Of The Year trophy).
"I'm in the best place in life right now. I finished my album, A Curious Tale Of Trials + Persons, I've signed to myself and got my own label - AGE 101: Music and I'm a very fortunate position where I'm able to put the album out on my own terms. This is an album without singles, it's a complete body of work, a concept album," says Little Simz. Take note!

Hiromi
Spark
Telarc I Concord Records

Japan has produced an impressive assemblage of jazz pianists, from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Makoto Ozone to Junko Onishi. And now pianist/composer Hiromi Uehara. When you listen to Hiromi play live... her arrangement of Pachelbel's  "Canon in D" or a duet with Chic Corea... you realize she has the spark.  Be it classical, avant-garde or jazz she mixes skill with magic only to Entertain!
On April 1 comes another great collaboration. Nine instrumentals penned by Hiromi are on her new album, appropriately called, Spark.
Spark showcases  Hiromi's Trio Project with sweeping narrative and emotive content.
The pianist finds her own spark in the interaction with her triomates of the last five years, beloved contra bass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Chick Corea, The O'Jays) and legendary drummer Simon Phillips (The Who, David Gilmour, Judas Priest, Toto, Jack Bruce).
Hiromi wants to take you on a journey, even put you in a trance, then "what will be, will be," says Hromi. "There's no limit. It can go on as long as Hiromi wants to," says Jackson. "A trio is a powerful number. It can be incredibly strong and creative in absence of a weak link," says Phillips.  There are no weak links or limits on this album.  You hear musicianship at its best. Listen and feel the spark! The tour withe the trio project starts in NY at the Highline Ballroom March 30, 2016.

Featured Hammond Artist

One of the highlights of the TEC Awards this year was to hear Dr Lonnie Smith jam with the Don Was all-star band. Hammond hall of famer, Smith enjoys a 50-year career.
Dr. Lonnie "The Turbinator" has re-defined the language of Jazz Organ.
His performances can leap from barely audible pastel textures to incendiary passages closer to hard rock than bebop.
His intense visage belies a keen sense of humor and joy, casting each of his shows in an almost cinematic light. A master of contrast and rhythm, Dr. Lonnie uses the Hammond more orchestrally than any other jazz organist, and always makes room for the funk. Unique, fascinating, and inspiring, indeed!  Meet more Hammond artists
