Andrew K. Spence
Film Composer  l producer I musician I studios

Producer Andrew Spence is classically trained and has worked in various mediums of jazz, EDM, and Film.  "I think chords are amazing, just one variation can put us in a blues, rock or jazz feel," says Spence who is always open to  'new harmonic concepts.'  Spence's scores have graced indie to top A- and B-List films to include: music production and soundscapes for Sam Raimi's, 'Drag Me To Hell', Priest (co-production with Christopher Young),  music producer and musician for the Johnny Depp film, 'The Rum Diary', to the massive 'stylistic' orchestral score for the internationally released 'The Millennium Bug' - to name a few.

Andrew easily transfers his arranging skills from the film medium to music production.  "Same techniques used in film apply. I like to add color and drama to a production.  A song can tell the story through good lyrics and an emotional orchestration, be it a  jazz ballad, rock, hip hop or pop."
Andrew who has collaborated with top mixers like Grammy-winner Rafa Sardina, sums up his mixing philosophy: "I listen to what the artist wants and offer a sonic concept to achieve those goals. Technology is on our side. I hear an Analog vibe coming through my mixes," says Spence who achieves the sound through a combination of Analog outboard gear and Digital analog emulation plug ins. "In the end the mix starts with great EARS!"
We asked Andrew about the current music industry landscape and here's what he had to say:  "It is a fast paced & dynamic industry. There are so many new ways of getting your music heard and monetized. At the end, it all starts with great songs and production.  Radio and marketing is still key to getting your music out to masses." Though Andrew has  co-written with many established artists, he still  likes to show young artists how to get more out of their songs by writing together or finding the best material for them. "Not all great singers are songwriters. But, everyone needs good material."

Andrew's favorite studio gear includes: Summit Audio EQP 200B Tube Equalizer, Peluso P-49 Tube Mic and UAD Apollo interface.

Remember this name. Ladina Spence is one of Andrew's recent productions and a good example of successful artist development. When asked to describe the process, Andrew simply says: "Believe  in your talent. It all has to start with great music. And never give up as the break you have been working so hard for is just around the corner! "

Blackbird, The Studio, Where ATCs Play!

According to John McBride If he only had one day to live, he'd spend it in the studio tracking!  It's this tremendous power of music that has inspired McBride and his team at Blackbird studios in Nashville. "...by the end of the day you've got a song, and that song could change the world. What could be better than that?"
McBride loves helping people make great music. "The studio should inspire the artist to his or her creative peak, and I've worked hard to make Blackbird a place where absolutely nothing stands in the way of the artist's very best work," says McBride who has been - and continues to be - wife, Martina's FOH engineer since long before she released her first album (The Time Has Come, 1992). Incidentally, the name of the studio honors McBride's favorite band, who recorded 'Blackbird' in 1968 at Abbey Road Studios. Citing the life-changing impact of the Beatles on a boy growing up in Wichita, Kansas, McBride now owns over 15,000 pieces of Beatles-related vinyl!

Of Blackbird's seven big control rooms, six use ATC   SCM300ASL or ATC SCM150ASL soffit-mounted loudspeakers either in stereo or surround-sound configurations. Moreover, Blackbird keeps a healthy stock of ATC SCM20ASL and ATC SCM50ASL nearfield monitors that clients can request in any room.

"It's a visceral, emotional experience for me and for the client, but it's also extremely accurate and revealing. I always know that when I get something sounding right on the ATCs, it's going to sound right everywhere else,"  says the studio owner McBride.

Blackbird's clients include: Bruce Springsteen, Tim McGraw, Miley Cyrus, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Lionel Richie, Sheryl Crow, Dolly Parton, Buddy Guy, Kid Rock, Mariah Carey, and Yo-Yo Ma.

Other ATC Owners: George Massenburg, Bruce Swedien, Rafa Sardina

Ed Cherney, Tom Petty, Lenny Kravitz, T Bone Burnett, Ryan Tedder, John Rodd, Niko Bolas, Glen Ballard, Dennis Sands, Shawn Murphy, and Alan Myerson, to name a few.

Plug Me In

Craig Bauer recently mixed a track for the POP/EDM artist, Svrcina. He shares some of his mixing and production techniques via Plugin Alliance article here. See if you can hear his use of  high pass filters on the vocals and in the bridge listen to the various filter effects on the lead vocal delays.

California's Plugin Alliance offers pro audio industry-leading plugins from acclaimed developers such as Brainworx, SPL and elysia with customer-friendly prices, licensing procedures and financing options.
This month ENGL's renowned E765 and E646 Victor Smolski amps are now available in native formats for the first time, and the bundle also includes the precision Brainworx bx_tuner plugin.  ENGL's high-gain tube amps have shaped the tone of a who's who in metal and hard rock guitar for the last decade, and that's showcased brilliantly with legendary shredder Victor Smolski's signature E646 VS plugin. By contrast, the vintage-minded E765 plugin runs the gamut from warm cleans to classic rock crunch. Both plugins are available separately for $149 MSRP each. However, combined with the bx_tuner, the ENGL Amp Bundle can dial in any guitar color on the rock and roll palette for $229 MSRP, a total discount of 28%.

Even better, ENGL Amp Bundle puts priceless signal paths and years of recording experience a mouse click away with an Auto mode that can step through each amp's 64 expert Recording Chains while you play. Brainworx founder and CEO Dirk Ulrich, a rock producer for 15 years for the likes of Dream Theater, Toto and Roadrunner Records, crafted the Recording Chains at the lavish Brainworx Studio, capturing three ENGL cabinets with up to nine high-end vintage and modern microphones through a rare Neve VXS72 console and high-end outboard EQs from Millennia, SPL and elysia.
"ENGL amps have long been a favorite of mine for both stage and studio," Ulrich said. "I really dug deep to capture the tones used on so many of the recordings I love." View it here

The roster of elite engineers and producers joining the PlugIn Alliance network is growing rapidly. GRAMMY Award winning mixing engineer, Craig Bauer, Khaliq Glover (Michael Jackson, Prince, Justin Timberlake) and Rafa Sardina  (Calle 13, Placido Domingo, Lady Gaga) among them. Warner/Chappell Music (WCM), the music publishing arm of Warner Music Group,  announced the promotion of Katie Vinten to Vice President, A&R. She previously served as Director, A&R. Based at the company's Los Angeles headquarters, Vinten will continue to scout, sign and develop new and established songwriting talent. She will continue to report to WCM President, North America, Jon Platt.
"She's an exceptional publisher who time and again brings out the best in our songwriters. Katie is a star who has only just begun to show us the depth of her talents, and I'm excited to see what's to come," said Platt.
"... I love the process of taking talented songwriters to the next level by providing a level of service and commitment they simply will not find elsewhere.  Warner/Chappell is an incredible environment where we aim to cultivate a songwriter's career at every level, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it," said Vinten.

Atlantic Records named Shawn Barron to VP, Urban A&R back in November 2014. Barron is based in the company's Burbank office. He started at Atlantic Records five years ago as Urban A&R Manager. Next up is Ty Dolla $ign's debut album which will be out early next year along with music from Barron's new signing, singer/songwriter PJ, who will release an EP in '15 as well.

  Marketing Panel at UCLA

l-r: Producer Jeff Weber, Sydney Alston, Claris Sayadian-Dodge, Bobby Borg, Kyle Garcia, Danny Warren

Students had lot of questions from panelists who were guests of Bobby Borg's class at  UCLA Haines Hall in May.  The topic:  Music Marketing for the DIY Musician, same title of Borg's new book.

Branding expert and instructor Borg who recently released his book "Music Maketing for the DIY Musician" via publisher Hal Leonard even had one of his former students on the industry panel.
Students wanted to know about fan perception, how to develop careers in music as a producer, musician/songwriter, manager.

Additionally. Guest panelists talked about product and service development and innovative strategies that lead to income generation. All panelists emphasised the importance of creating of quality work be it in the studio or on stage.

On The Fortune List

Remember the '07 remix "I Get Money: Forbes 1-2-3 Billion Dollar" by Sean "Diddy" Combs, Jay Z and 50 Cent? Now less than a decade later, according to Fortune magazine, rappers are closing in on ten-figure wealth.  Combs is the leader of the pack with an estimated fortune of $700 million.  His new venture Revolt TV, the music-focused, multi-platform channel of which he's the majority owner.   Dr. Dre ranks second with $550 million, and Jay Z, in third place with an estimated $520 million. Dre's Beats controls an astounding two-thirds of the premium headphone market, with annual sales reportedly in excess of $1 billion. Jay Z's fortune continues to grow with nine-figure deals ($204 million Rocawear sale in 2007 and his $150 million pact with Live Nation in 2008). More recently his Roc Nation record label and management firm added a sports agency (with deals like Robinson Cano's $240 million monster agreement) and Tidal is rising.   Bryan "Birdman" Williams with a net worth of over $300 million  with brother Ronald "Slim" Williams cofounded Cash Money Records two decades ago --roster includes Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. Birdman has also diversified with Cash Money Content, GT Vodka and the YMCMB clothing line

A United Screening
Before the era of The Wrecking Crew, the record industry was primarily in New York, London and Detroit in the late 50's and early 60s.  In the mid-60s, much of that mainstream activity was centered in LA and the West Coast. The Wrecking Crew session players were recording around the clock and anonymously responsible for the sound of the Gold records that dominated the charts. "The Wrecking Crew" was a nickname coined by drummer Hal Blaine for the group of young, hip session musicians that played on countless hit records and replaced the traditional coat & tie sessions of the past. A new documentary "The Wrecking Crew," which depicts the era when a small group of session players dominated the record charts, was screened in United Recording's Studio A, where many of the legendary sessions actually took place.  On hand for the catered event were a gathering of 90+ musicians and fans, along with the film's director Denny Tedesco.

Come play! It's  Monday, June 29, 2015, at MountainGate Country Club, with the shotgun start at 12:00 noon. The event is again being organized by seasoned event producer Karen Dunn of KMD Productions LLC and will support the music program at A Place Called Home, a dynamic community center and safe haven in South Central Los Angeles where underserved youth 8-21 years old are empowered to take ownership of the quality and direction of their lives through programs in education, arts, and well-being. Recording veterans Ed Cherney and Al Schmitt will return as Honorary Co-Chairs for the afternoon's festivities.
Dunn is now accepting participation entries, whether as sponsors, golfers or both. In addition to the 18 holes of pristine golfing, the day will include a $1 million shoot-out opportunity, a hole-in-one Hyundai giveaway, a Bartels' Harley Davidson motorcycle hole-in-one giveaway, scotch tasting, great food, poker, a "19th hole" and more. The picturesque course, designed by legendary golf course architect Ted Robinson, is centrally located, not far from downtown L.A. The course features beautiful views, a driving range, putting and chipping greens, and much more. Dunn and the industry veteran Rose Mann-Cherney will be driving the "world famous tequila cart" to make sure all of the day's participants are playing their best.  New this year is live streaming on the 6th hole from  Absolute Live Productions with CEO Dave Rosen. The transmission of this live stream will be utilizing the TVU 8200 HD wireless cellular backpack.
studioexpresso is among the confirmed sponsors to include: Audio-Technica, Clyne Media, Bob Hodas Acoustic Analysis, Guitar Center Professional, AES, Hotel Angeleno, Hyundai, Icebox Water, JBL, NAMM, The Recording Studio Insurance Program, Sterling Audio, Transaudiogroup, United Recording Studios and Westlake Recording Studios, with more being added. Hyundai will once again be taking the winning foursome to their Hyundai National Invitational in Vegas. "Think of it like an annual retreat to relax and meet industry friends! An opportunity for networking and exchanging ideas. I look forward to it every year and hope you can join us," says studioexpresso's Claris Sayadian-Dodge.

Letterman Says GoodBye And Thank You!

David Letterman's final show played like the Fanfare for the Common Man.
He gracefully thanked his crew, musicians, his fans and his wife and son. As the saying goes: Show me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are?

US President Gerald Ford opened the show, informing the viewers, "Our long national nightmare is over."

They were then echoed by George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and President Obama.

"Letterman is retiring," Obama added, before Letterman appeared next to him: "You're just kidding, right?" he asked.

After 33 years and more than 6,000 shows
in late-night TV. A Graceful Exit.

Featured Hammond Artist

This month's Hammond artist comes to us from Melbourne, Australia.
Chris Mulhall is a multi instrumentalist with a passion for songwriting and has been around music from a young age. Studying sound engineering & production, his love of performing took over as he fell into the local scene playing venues, bars and cafes through the city.  Most notably Chris has been playing keyboards for the artist Vance Joy since the project's early beginnings and has expanded as a player/performer over numerous international tours with Vance to include the upcoming LA dates at the Staple Center 8.21-26 with Taylor Swift.

Atlantic recording artist Van Joy recently won The International Songwriting Competition grand prize.   "Writing songs is what gives me a feeling of purpose. I'm proud to receive this award voted on by my songwriting peers." Other Prizes Won by Vance include $25,000 in cash plus $45,000 in services and merchandise, including a gift package from HAMMOND USA (co-sponsors of the Competition) which included a HAMMOND Sk1-73 and a complete Accessory Package.

Jamison Ross is the winner of the 2012 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Drums competition. On June 23,
Ross will be releasing his self-titled debut album, Jamison, via Concord Jazz
A gifted composer, arranger when Ross won the Monk competition, no one knew that he could sing!  "When I took on the quest to record my first record, I was torn between my heart as a drummer and my heart as a singer.  Ultimately, I was compelled to take a journey that incorporated my voice as part of my sound," says 27-year-old Ross.

Infused with jazz, blues and genuine soul, the album offers 12 tracks.
Mixed in with classics are some of Ross' own compositions including "Emotions," a lyrical narration of Ross' personal perspective on the journey of life, supported by a danceable rhythm.

The album features guitarist Rick Lollar, bassist Corcoran Holt, saxophonist Dayve Stewart, pianist Chris Pattishall, organist Cory Irvin, and trumpeter Alphonso Horne III - all of whom Ross has cultivated a soulful chemistry with dating back to his college years.  Also on deck is special guest pianist Jonathan Batiste, who plays on four songs.

Slice of Apple in Cupertino

Remembering Steve Jobs

Norman Foster is the desiger of Apple's $5 Billion "Spaceship" Campus in Cupertino, CA.  Costing more than the new World Trade Center complex, it features 3.7 miles of curved glass wrapping around the office building, concrete ceilings will be carefully cast then lifted into place, museum-grade stone-infused flooring will replace standard concrete, and most infamously, gaps between surfaces promise not to exceed 1/32 of an inch (vs. the U.S. build standard of 1/8 of an inch).
The design uses 80% green space run on 100% renewable energy.
"Don't remember me as your client, remember me as your team," said Jobs to Foster in the beginning.
All in the details! Take a peek inside the development of Apple's new headquarters in this video and enjoy an absurd minimalist spectacle coming soon!  It will be one of the most iconic buildings that will exist in the world once it's finished in 2016. Watch the progress as of March of this year.
