Mark Linett is a three time Grammy-winning engineer and producer whose early career was spent mixing live sound for Frank Zappa, Earth Wind and Fire, Journey and Rufus, among others.  Later, as a staff engineer at Warner Records Amigo Studios, he engineered albums for a wide range of artists including Randy Newman, Los Lobos, Jane's Addiction and Rickie Lee Jones.  Linett recently upgraded his MicroMain27 monitors to the latest Gen2 models at "Your Place or Mine," his private studio in LA, which features a customized API 2488 console with Flying Faders, and two original Universal Audio tube consoles, as well as an extensive mic and outboard gear collection.  All tape formats from mono to 24 track are available along with a Pro Tools 32x32 TDM system. "I really liked my previous monitors, but there was always something in the bottom end between the bass and the kick that was always tricky to get right the first time. You'd do a mix, take it somewhere else, and realize, 'The balance ins't quite right, I'll have to come back and do it again. Tedi Sarafian at Barefoot convinced me to try their speakers." When Amigo Studios closed in 1983, Linett built his own studio/ remote recording system and worked with Laura Nyro, Dave Alvin, and Kris Kristofferson, among others. A chance phone call in 1987 landed Linett in the engineer chair for Brian Wilson's first solo album and began a 25 plus year relationship which continues to this day.  Along the way Mark has mixed the Beach Boys Pet Sounds in both stereo and surround and was nominated for the best engineering Grammy in 2004 for Brian Wilson Presents Smile.  "Most home speakers have a smile curve, the bottom end and the top end tend to be boosted loudness. It's nice to listen to what the consumer is going to listen to, but in terms of a studio environment, you want something that's quite a bit more accurate, especially the imaging, that where the placements are is accurate," says Linett.

John Rodd On Walking With The Enemy 

 

A-Designs Audio and ATC Monitors user John Rodd
mixed the score for the newly released film, Walking With The Enemy.  
In theaters now, the film stars Sir Ben Kingsley, Jonas Armstrong and Burn Gorman. "It's based on a true story of incredible heroism amid the atrocities committed against the Jews in Hungary during WWII," says Rodd about the film that was named best film at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival.  The score album is soon to be released -- also mastered by Rodd. 

Timothy Williams composed the score that deftly navigates the atrocities and heroism, sacrifice and bravery of the story

"Scoring Walking With The Enemy was one of the most incredible and most challenging experiences of my career. I tried to capture the pain and anguish of the time, as well as the bravery and hope of Elek Cohen (based on the true story of Pinchas Rosenbaum), who disguised himself as a German officer and Arrow Cross member to help thousands of Jews escape. When you score a film you watch the scenes again and again...Although it was challenging to convey what I was seeing through music, ultimately it was incredibly rewarding," says the composer Williams.  

 

 

Songwriter Spotlight: Terry Sawchuck

 

Originally from a small paper mill town, Espanola, Ontario Canada,  Terry Sawchuk started writing songs at age 16. It wasn't long before he started composing original music for highschool musicals and started a garage band in his brother's basement. His first break came in 1991 when he landed the job of engineer at Arnyard Studios in Toronto. Between '91-'95 Sawchuk helped record such albums as Our Lady Peace's "Naveed" and "Clumsy" (Sony/BMG), among others.

In 1994 Terry co-wrote one song with Alanis Morissette and producer Glenn Ballard. "Superstar Wonderful Weirdo's" went as far as being recorded and mixed during the "Jagged Little Pill" sessions.

A&M Records signed Sawchuk and his alternative rock project "The Miller Stain Limit" to his first major label deal in 1997. At age 27 Terry produced, engineered, mixed and co-wrote the album "Radiate" which featured the top 20 single "Cellophane".

Co-written with Josh Jenkins, Terry's song "I Still Love You" appears in TV show Reighn on The CW. 6500 views on youtube in its first week.

Lill's Blues Revue With Dave Reitzas

 

 
Respected singer/songwriter Pamela Lillard has recorded new material for her third project with Grammy Award-winning producer/engineer Dave Reitzas.

"Lill's Blues Revue" is an homage to the Blues, celebrating Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Magic Sam, Mississippi John Hurt, Huddie Ledbetter, and other legends.  With roots in the Delta Blues, Lillard, was joined by guitarist Randy Chance, drummer Tony Braunagel and bassist Bob Glaub in a striking new celebration of the Blues.
Influenced by everyone from Ma Rainey to Bonnie Raitt, Lillard began performing at Kingston Mines in Chicago when she was 20.  Raised in Ohio, Lillard's guitar work, percussive and rhythmically idiosyncratic, began in one of Chicago's best-known Blues clubs. " I'd been playing for about five years before I started going to Kingston Mines," she explains. " I went down there for open mic night and sang the blues.  After a couple of times they asked me to be in the house band."  Barely out of her teens, she found herself jamming with Howling Wolf's sidemen.  In 1991, Lillard moved to L.A. and began working with the musicians who would join her in the group Ruby, which later transformed into Pearl & The Rhythm Method.  When asked for a description of her music, Lillard calls the style "blues alternative, or acoustic groove music."

 

Loeb To Co-Host Pensado Awards


Singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb has been announced as an additional co-host for the inaugural Pensado Awards, an award show acknowledging today's emerging brand of music professional and "recognizing the faces behind the sound." Loeb joins the following previously announced co-hosts: producer-engineers Chris Lord-Alge (Muse, Pink, Foo Fighters), Marcella Araica (Britney Spears, Madonna, Pink) and Young Guru (Jay Z, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey). Created by the producers of the acclaimed online video series Pensado's Place, the Pensado Awards are set to take place June 28, 2014, at the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica, California, and broadcast online globally one week later. fans, executives and musicians-are seen in the works of photographers who documented multiple generations of this popular history.  The photographers include the late amateur photographer Elmer Williams; the late studio photographer Walden S. New Faces of A&R   

 

What is the typical salary range for A&R reps?

It's pretty broad. A regional person who works full-time for a label might get anywhere between $45,000 and $70,000, and it can kind of go up from there. Directors probably make between $70,000 and $90,000, and VPs typically make well over $100,000.


Warner Bros. added three new A&R Executives to its West Coast office. Veteran Michael Howe and meet the two newer faces: Jack Minihan and Kate Craig.

 

 

Jack Minihan -- A&R WB 

 

Jack Minihan graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor's degree in Communications and Public Relations. Minihan landed the internship in New York City with RCA and ended up working his way to a position with Warner Brothers Records in Los Angeles. He worked for the Promotions Department at WB where he managed radio promotions, networking, interpersonal communication, and writing, which he feels relates directly to his degree choice.

Katelyn Craig began her post as director of A&R at Warner Bros Records & Warner/Chappell Music Publishing since January of 2014.  Prior to her new post, she was an independant music supervisor since 2010.  IMDB lists her as associate  music supervisor in Mud and Peach Plum Pear. She also served as EA to Warner Bros and Chapel Music CEO. 

She was head of Publishing and TV & Film Licensing at New West Records (Ben Lee, John Hiatt) & New West Independent Music Publishing from oversaw all publishing administration and artist relations including creating and managing all writers catalogs, gathering all songs, lyrics, and splits, registering and pitching songs, and attaining song cuts and sync licenses as well as planning and overseeing SXSW events, and corporate meetings.


Apple Got Beats!

Apple made a bold move this month when they acquired Beats Electronics, the company co-founded by Dr. Dre in 2008at a tune of reported $3.2 billion.

Now there's talks about Twitter acquiring music service SoundCloud (the YouTube for audio content)
which could use Twitter's resources to secure big licensing contracts with major music labels (something the service has previously been unable to do). SoundCloud has about 250 million active listeners per month, as of October 2013. Twitter has about 255 million active users in total.  Sounds compatible. The Difference? The difference between a listener and a user, however, is pretty vast. Those listening to SoundCloud might not necessarily be on the company's website or even be signed up for the service. They could, for example, be listening to an embedded stream in a blog post, no strings attached, with no knowledge that they are even playing a SoundCloud stream. But when Twitter counts its "users," it's talking about anyone who has created a log-in and handle for the site. If Twitter really is interested in buying SoundCloud, it likely won't be cheap. The company's last valuation is estimated at $700 million. 

Ten Million Member Eks

Spotify announced its 10 millionth paying subscriber this month, and an additional 30 million people listen for free! By comparison, Beats estimates of its user base range from 110,000 to 200,000.
Meantime, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek says that as long as Spotify accomplishes its main task-getting people to stream more music-free users will continue to upgrade to paid subscriptions. "We know if you do that, you're going to be like, 'Hey, 10 bucks is nothing. It's like two beers,'" he says.  margins don't improve as they get larger "In Sweden, it's actually less than one beer." Tom Neuwirth was born on November 6th, 1988. For the first time he performed as his alter ego Conchita Wurst in 2011. RIP - Maya Angelou
April 4, 1928 -- May 28, 2014
Maya Angelou was an influential American poet, author, activist and ambassador of love. Angelou wrote a total of seven autobiographies.
 When I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was published in 1969, Angelou was hailed as a new kind of memoirist, one of the first African American women who were able to publicly discuss their personal lives.  
Her honors included a Pulitzer Prize nomination for her book of poetry, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie,  a Tony Award nomination for her role in the 1973 play Look Away, and three Grammys for her spoken word albums.  She served on two presidential committees, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2000,  the Lincoln Medal in 2008,  and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. Angelou was awarded over thirty honorary degrees. In addition, she used the elements of blues music, including the act of testimony when speaking of one's life and struggles, ironic understatement, and the use of natural metaphors, rhythms, and intonations.
She will continue to live in her literary works and in the hearts of those she touched.

XSCAPE

This year Michael Jackson "performed" at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards, in holographic form, and just like when Tupac was resurrected for Coachella a few years ago, not everyone is happy about it. Is this the beginning of the end for flesh and blood entertainers? Let us hear your view. 
The selection of "Slave to the Rhythm" for the hologram performance was made late last year; Jackson associates the Talauega brothers and Jamie King were brought in to choreograph and direct the video, which was produced by Pulse Evolution and Tricycle Logic

The Billboard event supports the king of pop's new album release of XSCAPE on May 13th on Epic Records.   XSCAPE is executive produced by Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A. Reid. After mining by the Estate of Jackson's archives, Reid was granted unlimited access to the treasures spanning four decades of material on which Jackson had completed his vocals. Reid then teamed up top producers Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate and John McClain to "contemporize" the songs while retaining Jackson's essence and integrity, creating the best music you've never heard.

"The new album features eight brand new recordings. A Deluxe Edition of XSCAPE will include a selection of the recordings in their original form.  

The title of this album honors Michael's album naming process," says Matt Forger (left) who takes us inside the studio in this exclusive sneak peak from the full album documentary which is available only on XSCAPE Deluxe Edition

A self­-described "rebellious child," Jonah Tolchin grew up in New Jersey on Clover Lane.
His new album, Clover Lane is produced by Marvin Etzioni (Lone Justice) and engineered by Anderson East in Nashville. The album includes musicians Chris Scruggs, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), John McCauley (Deer Tick), Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson), and more. It was mixed in Silverlake, California with Sheldon Gomberg (Charlie Musselwhite, Ben Harper) and mastered by Bernie Grundman.

Reminiscent of Guthrie's talking blues and old­time stringband music, Tolchin has found his own voice on Clover Lane both as a songwriter and a singer. His debut on Yep Roc bridges the gap between classic folk self-­sufficiency and punk's DIY defiance with a uniquely poetic, open­hearted sensibility at its core.
This album offers a few good soundtrack candidates for the right film. Perhaps in life, we are all  looking for that Diamond Mind. Tolchin brings what may be his experience into a dream-like memory to listeners or vice versa. In 21st Century Girl (official vid) Tolchin has a laid back style of story telling that's backed by expert production of Marvin Etzioni (Lone Justice) -- sweeping chorus lines, musicianship and arrangements (reminiscent of Roy Orbison). We may all relate to this love song in the new age when "life keeps passing by," and wondering "am I breathing for a reason," then it's the 2st century girl "who will hold you through the seasons."
Tolchin told his producer "It would be great to get someone like Steve Berlin".  Etzioni replied, "Well, why don't we just get Steve Berlin?!"   It's perhaps this meeting of the minds and support between an artist and producer that creates excitement  and a special song flow that make an album stand out. 
"The house I grew up in on Clover Lane is the center of the spider's web from which the interconnected strands have been woven into these songs and recordings," says Tolchin.
