Brent Fischer (right corner) appears with Elvis Costello and The Roots on Jimmy Fallon, September 19, 2013
Elvis Costello & The Roots Celebrate Release of New Album, Wise Up Ghost On Jimmy FallonFeaturing Mirasoul and Brent Fischer OrchestraNamed "the most enjoyable late-night show" by the New York Times in 2011, NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" has become the go-to destination for comedy, music and A-list talent. Musical guests have included: Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and Justin Timberlake.
Elvis Costello and The Roots performed on Jimmy Fallon on September 19th to promote the release of their new album, "Wise Up Ghost." Costello and Roots performance was enhanced by Roots' beefy brass section and lush strings directed by Brent Fischer, who is credited for arranging and orchestrating six songs on the new album. Costello and vocal sensation La Mirasoul a.k.a. Josefa Flores González(right) performed the duet: "
Cinco Minutos Con Vos."
"Wise Up Ghost" is getting rave reviews. NY Daily says the songs: "... employ strings in ways as innovative as Curtis Mayfield or Isaac Hayes found on their forward-thinking soul recordings." Randall Roberts of LA Times says "...Washes of strings and horns dot songs with Stax-like urgency. A heavy work both thematically and musically, it shows one of the great songwriters of the last three-plus decades at yet another artistic peak. If you've ever fallen in love with a Costello record, be prepared for a new obsession."
Longtime Roots collaborator Steven Mandel co-produced 'Wise Up Ghost' with Questlove and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Elvis Costello. 11-time Grammy-winner Rafa Sardina (Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Rodrigo y Gabriela ) engineered the orchestra sessions for Fischer at Conway Studios.
This fall, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is everywhere to promote his new album. He's on your TV, he's on your Twitter feed, he's teaching at NYU and doing fund-raising events - and, of course, he's the one anchoring the relentless groove of the world's funkiest band, the Roots, whose ballyhooed album Wise Up Ghost, a spiky soul-funk collaboration with Elvis Costello, is officially released this month on Blue Note Records. The collector vinyl version is available at Amazon. What's in Questlove's stylin' wardrobe? Try the Questlove x Nike 1World Air Force 1 shoe. The shoe's color is a blend of burgundy leather and red canvas with neon green elephant print. It has red shoelaces, a lasered silhouette of Questlove on the back of the shoe which is also featured on the left tongue, and a gold colored Nike swoosh logo. Questlove states that these shoes are "an extension of his personality." Let your feet feel the love.
Fallon's choice of house band, The Roots, has been universally praised.
Fallon was honored with a 2012 People's Choice Award and is celebrated with three 2011 Emmy nominations.
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" is produced by Universal Television and Broadway Video. Lorne Michaels is the executive producer. Michael Shoemaker produces. Gavin Purcell is the supervising producer.

ATCs Take Center Stage at Italian DJ Robert Miles' Studio
From its penthouse location, the studio has spectacular views over the city. Alongside the signature wood panel finishes from designers, Recording Architecture, the room is dominated by stand-mounted ATC SCM100 three-way studio monitors, continuing a theme from Miles' previous studio in west London, which featured the larger ATC SCM300s.
Robert was introduced initially to ATC monitors by Roger D'Arcy of Recording Architecture, who also created the design for the earlier studio. "So many systems sound good when you play the music loud, but not as good when you work at low volume. ATC monitors maintain the quality sound at low levels. That was mainly what I looked for because, spending 16 hours a day in here, I like to mix my music at a low volume. In this respect, ATC really works for me. Many well-known brands of monitors will alter the sound. An ATC speaker doesn't have any coloration. What you hear is the truth."
Although his priority is his solo project, Robert Miles welcomes many collaborators to his studio, including Bill Laswell, Nitin Sawhney, Trilok Gurtu, Jon Thorne and Robert Fripp, with whom he is planning an album, and producing new material for up and coming artists. Describing himself as a '360-degree composer/producer,' Miles is also DJ-ing regularly, producing for his own label S:alt Records, and composing music for advertising and film projects. ATC's drivers are manufactured in-house to exacting tolerances and are legendary for their many design innovations, such as the innovative SL magnet system and the company's renowned Soft Dome midrange driver, which achieves exceptionally broad and even dispersion to produce a flat response anywhere in the room. Situated in Aston Down in rural Gloucestershire, England, ATC was established in London in 1974 by acoustics engineer and musician Bill Woodman.
What's In Your Lunchbox?
Daking 500RS at AES 2013 Seriously convenient and ready to plug in, the Daking 500RS "comes right out of the shipping carton, cards installed, ready to use, no wiring, jumper cutting or moving, just attach the included d-sub connecting cable on the rear panel, plug it in and start enjoying an incredible 2 channel mic-pre, compressor, equalizer recording solution," says Brad Lunde of Trans Audio Group who will be at booth 3132 along with Mr Daking himself! By now most of the old consoles have been parted out and their mic-pre's and eq's sold off in pairs. These "vintage" devices often have switches and capacitors that are worn out and require extensive repair and restoration. The costs and lost time frequently take the charm away from dabbling in these antique audio devices. Mic Pre 500 uses Class A, fully-discrete transistor circuitry. The Mic Pre 500 uses a tri-color LED metering setup and accepts both line and hi-Z inputs via the 1/4" jack, in addition to the XLR microphone equipped with +48V phantom power. With a -20dB pad for added versatility, the Mic Pre 500 microphone preamplifier is ready for anything.
"Daking uses modern production techniques along with time proven designs and components to create products that give you the performance of the classics without the headaches," says Lunde. Plus all Daking products are built in the U.S.A., and are lead free!
Watch Geoff Daking go over the 500 series -- Two Mic Pre 500, two Compressor 500 (MSRP $795) and two EQ 500 pre - all can be installed in an API 500-6B lunchbox.

Advise From The Top
What Don Was Calls Generous Music
Don Was in Studio A at Blackbird, Nashville, TN
With multiple Grammy Awards (including Producer of the Year), and hits, Don Was (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, John Mayer and the Rolling Stones) is now tasked with taking Blue Note Records forward into the 21st century. In fact, what Blue Note artists -- trumpeter Terence Blanchard (jazz), vocalist Gregory Porter, (hip-hop tinged pianist) Robert Glasper and folk/soul singer/songwriter Amos Lee and newly signed Elvis Costello & The Roots -- have in common is what Was calls "generous music."
Was keeps label founder Alfred Lion's mission statement as mantra: Create authentic music. "Music is built int our DNA - it's neurological," says Don Was who understands and appreciates successful musician's ability to express themselves effectively and connecting to generations. Was also believes in good songwriting. His advise. Be different.

Lady Gaga Goes ArtPop
Applause please. on November 11, Lady Gaga will be releasing a new album, Art Pop. First single is a study in eye-popping imagery. "She'll do anything to make her audience happy and inspired," says Inez van Lamsweerde of directing duo Inez & Vinoodh who created the vid inspired by silent movies, early horror films and Botticelli's painting (one scene Gaga appears in a clam shell bikini, her curls cascading around her shoulders). And for a song like "Applause," the directors knew they needed a way to get hands in there and that's why you see the lady in "The glove-kini! Gaga is credited for her idea to do a fashion show, where she would be flying instead of walking. And, if you look at Ms Lamsweerde's portfolio, her clients include: Dior, Valentino and Miu Miu, among others. Meet style with capitol S. What's actually cool about Lady G now, she has been seen with little or no make up). And she's quite beautiful.
Most Lady Gaga facebook likes exceed 200,000. Welcome to definition of reigning queen of ArtPop. You think you can follow her act? This means revamping your image constantly. Having a vision and being driven by art. Also it means finding people who share your vision, like her art director, Marla (right). "I'm probably the only D.J. that has it written into his contract in history - that I will charge you a penalty if you don't let me play at least three hours. It takes me so long to tell a story. " -- Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of The Roots

Music For Strings, Percusssion And The Rest
The Clare Fischer Orchestra
Conducted by Dr. Clare Fischer, Gary Foster and Brent Fischer The music of Dr. Clare Fischer is a synthesis of influences across an unusually broad spectrum. From an early age, Fischer was absorbing the works of Bach, Bartok, Ellington, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Strayhorn, Berg, Villa-Lobos and later Jobim and Dutilleaux. He considered himself an orchestral composer first and foremost. In grand Fischer tradition, the new album on Clavo Records epitomizes the concept of complex simplicity: Continuing to amalgamate centuries of orchestral developments into accessible sonic artistry.Enjoy performances by veterans of both the classical and jazz genres, Bryan Pezzone, Gary Foster, Brent Fischer, Cecilia Tsan and Roland Kato among others.
"There's no experience quite like hearing the the amazing range of aural colors to be found in orchestral instruments," says Brent Fischer (Elvis Costello & The Roots, Usher, D'Angelo) who is continuing his late father, Clare Fischer's legacy arranging for pop and R&B artists while playing and directing the Clare Fischer Orchestra(s).
Grammy-winning album Ritmo! by The Clare Fischer Latin Jazz Big Band, Directed by Brent Fischer, is now nominated for a Latin Grammy! The Latin Grammy awards will be broadcast live from Las Vegas, November 21 on Univision. Congrats to all nominees.Music For Strings, Percusssion And The Rest is available at wwww.ClareFischer.com MP3 (highest bitrate with full digital booklet) Also on Amazon, iTunes and CD Baby.
Laura Mvula Sing To The Moon AmazonLast time a singer/songwriter demanded my attention was Adele. Now it's the classically trained British import, 26-year-old Laura Mvula (née Douglas). You may have caught her at the El Rey in Los Angeles on Spetember 17. Her new album " Sing to the Moon" on RCA is delightful. Her music has been described as "gospeldelia". I heard it as my favorite DJ Ann Litt (KCRW) played the title song one Saturday afternoon as I was driving from my favorite bakery. Suddenly tears welled up and I had to stop to write down the artist's name or the song title! The melody and lyrics made me feel loss of a dear friend and her magnificence. Soon gratitude replaced sadness. Certain artists grab you like this. You want to listen to the song over and over and share. And that's exactly what I did. Laura is raw, sincere, the real deal - good songwriting meets great performance. Fans must have agreed. One visit to her website and you'll find the limited edition double 12" Vinyl, signed by Laura at $31.99 is SOLD OUT! The choral and orchestral arrangements by her are exquisite! Her debut album "Sing to the Moon", was released on March 4, 2013. Mvula grew up in the Birmingham suburbs of Selly Park and Kings Heath with two younger siblings. She sang with Black Voices, an a capella group set up by her aunt. She graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition. While she was working as a supply teacher in a Birmingham secondary school, she started writing songs on her laptop. She was working as a receptionist when she sent out two demos to several people in the music industry. She is married to singer Themba Mvula. Signed to Sony subsidiary RCA, Mvula released her debut extended play, "She", on 16 November 2012. The album preceeds her single "Green Garden". The song is an elegy to her home in Kings Heath.

DJ / studio owner Robert Mills
A 'digital domain' user for eight years, his minimalist studio is designed around a MAC G5 double processor, Digidesign HD192kHz audio interface + Pro Logic Pro 7 system, with copious quantities of plug-ins, "all to simulate the analogue sound. I love the digital domain for its limitless options, and try to get what I want through a combination of digital mixing and processing/mastering with analogue machines to warm up the sound. Today all you need to mix is a powerful computer, an audio/midi interface like Pro Tools/Logic and as many plug-ins as you can get."

Vocal Coach To The Stars
Renee Grant-Williams' career stature rivals that of her star clientele which include: "American Idol" judge, Keith Urban and "Idol" favorites Kree Harrison, Bo Bice and winner Carrie Underwood.
Her other celebrity clients range from country artists: Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, and Martina McBride to pop/rock legends Huey Lewis, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead and Linda Rondstadt as well as Miley Cyrus and "The Voice" judge, Christina Aguilera.
Grant-Williams' iconoclastic regimen as a vocal coach is focused on the "Consonants" rather than the vowels. She explains, "One day I had an epiphany and realized that consonants were actually more expressive than the vowels. I consider myself the last champion of consonants." Her brick & mortar method as a vocal coach is reflected in her landmark Nashville brick building (at 2nd and Broadway) that has been home to Grant-Williams' historic music studio for over 20 years.
Her exceptional education is distinguished by 3 years at Carnegie Mellon University (undergraduate) and an additional 4 years at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she received her Bachelor of Music. She also attended the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA, the Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. Grant-Williams is also an accomplished soprano soloist.

Elton John
The Diving Board
As part of USC school of music Visions and Voices series, students and fans filled into Bovard Auditorium to hear a performance by Elton John on September 16th
The show of EJ hits was conducted by his former keyboardist, film composer James Newton Howard (The Sixth Sense, The Hunger Games), now serving on the advisory board of USC music department.
Smart PR to support the new album, The Diving Board, his first studio album in seven years produced by T Bone Burnett. The album features 12 new songs written by Elton and his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as three piano interludes composed by the artist. Burnett encouraged EJ to go back to basics to a piano-bass-drums set-up, like Elton's touring band of 1970-71, which featured Nigel Olsson on drums and Dee Murray on bass. Burnett attended one of Elton's historic Troubadour concerts in Los Angeles the week of August 25, 1970, the series of shows which made EJ a star, as they say, overnight.
Reminds me of my experience of an Elton John concert. At age 16, I discovered how enjoying a rock concert can cure the common cold at the Greek Theater! That experience inspired me to find a studio job which paved the way for the work I do today. Thank you EJ! On the next album, I'd love to hear more Dream sequences like the featured 1,2,3 on The Diving Board.
By the way, courtesy of John, USC Thornton vocalists and brass players joined him onstage during the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 22. John's performance was enhanced by backup from 14 vocalists from the USC Thornton Chamber Singers and four brass students playing tuba, trombones, and trumpet. The Trojans were directed by Jo-Michael Scheibe, chair of USC Thornton's Choral Music program.

FREE Central Park Concert Benefits Gloval Poverty 9.28.13
The Global Poverty Project, in proud partnership with the Cotton On Foundation, announced the 2013 Global Citizen Festival - a free ticketed concert on the Great Lawn of New York's iconic Central Park - will take place on September 28, 2013 with Stevie Wonder, Kings of Leon, Alicia Keys, and John Mayer. The Global Poverty Project aims to achieve a combined total of one million actions by this September. To do so, one of the first "actions" fans can complete is the signing of A World at School Initiative's Stand with Malala Petition, which demands emergency action to help the 57 million children without access to primary education. Malala Yousafzai, the teenage education activist from Pakistan who has inspired a worldwide movement to keep girls in school, will hand the petition over to the leadership of the United Nations on July 12, 2013. "It's not about cutting cheques, it's about raising awareness, empowering people with truth so they can engender positive change that's tangible. It's a simple as that," says Tim Diamond, general manager of Cotton On Foundation. "We are honored to work with this year's line up, in a united effort to end extreme poverty," said Ryan Gall, co-Founder and executive producer of the Global Citizen Festival.
