Emotional support is a key component of any rehabilitation plan and to sustaining wellness.  The support and encouragement I received during my own recovery from the Big "C"  helped me to see a higher purpose -- to help others battling cancer heal their emotional wounds, find peace and finally get their happy back!   Please see the video below announcing my new "Healing Boobies" program and pass along to anyone you know who may be tackling the toxic emotions that cancer leaves behind.

Here's to all of us getting our happy on in the new year!

New Study Says Chemo Brain is For Real

Mental fuzziness is a common complaint of many cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and appears to be more likely if radiation is also used as part of treatment.  A new University of Texas study supports the validity of "chemo brain" and suggests that the condition may be triggered by the widely-prescribed anthracycline chemotherapy drug used in breast cancer treatment to damage cancer cell DNA.  While the drug is effective in killing cancerous cells, it also produces neurotoxic effects on the brain, impairing memory and cognitive skills.

Neurofeedback brain-wave training can help break through the mental fog...

& Learning To Get Your Happy Back
Dr. Keri Chiappino discusses her personal journey of recovery and resilience

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.  Dickens' words rang so true for me personally three years ago.  I had just received the most exciting news that the birth mother of my soon-to-arrive daughter was in labor and was heading to the airport when my doctor called with the crushing diagnosis:  I had invasive breast cancer. What should have been the most wonderful time of my life was

spent undergoing multiple surgeries and eight rounds of chemotherapy.

For many, the emotional and physical after effects of chemotherapy can continue post treatment for months or even years and are not always fully addressed by the medical community.  Lack of focus, short-term memory loss and extreme fatigue are some of the debilitating post-chemotherapy cognitive impairment (PCCI), aka "chemo brain," symptoms that often wreak havoc on work life and relationships.  During my own chemotherapy regimen, I was fortunate to have access to neurofeedback brain-wave training which spared me from chemo brain, enabling me to focus on my new beautiful baby, my practice and of course my patients and ultimately to launch a new chapter in my life to provide emotional support for breast cancer survivors, affectionately called "Healing Boobies," dedicated to helping thrivers "get their happy back."

Achieving Lasting Weight Loss
in the New Year

Have you struggled to lose weight over the years, only to find after initial success those lost pounds manage to creep back?  Lifestyle changes, diet and exercise of course are key to a successful weight loss plan, but research has shown that enlisting the help of a mentor can help you stick to your plan, shed pounds and maintain your weight loss.

According to Dr. Andreas Michaelides, a clinical psychologist specializing in weight loss therapy at New Life Wellness Center, "People struggling with weight issues have likely picked up some behaviors throughout their lives that make it difficult to shed the pounds.  A behavioral approach is effective in improving the long-term outcome. After all, we learn how to eat the way we do, and learned behaviors can be unlearned..."

Acupuncture Proven Effective in Relieving Pediatric Chronic Pain

A new study from Rush University Medical Center suggests that acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment for children who experience chronic

headaches, stomach pain, musculoskeletal pain, injuries, scoliosis and Crohn's disease. While acupuncture is known to reduce adult pain, up until now little data has existed on its effectiveness for pediatric pain.

All 55 pediatric patients in the study reported significant and progressive declines in pain throughout the eight-session treatment. In addition to pain relief, participants reported significant reductions in emotional, social and educational and health problems.  The study results are particularly promising for children who suffer from sickle cell anemia and side effects of cancer treatment.

Our licensed acupuncturist Lori Fortunato LAc works with pediatric patients and has had positive results with conditions such as back and knee pain, anxiety and digestive issues as well as hives.  Contact our office to learn how acupuncture can help relieve your child's pain. 631.265.1223.
