Happy Autumn!  We hope you have been out and about, enjoying the mild temperatures we've been blessed with these many weeks.  Fall is a great time for hiking through one of Long Islands' many beautiful nature trails and enjoying the fiery colors of the season -- good for the body and the soul!

With October being National Chiropractic Health Month, now is a good time to come in for a chiropractic visit to help prepare you for the rigors of the raking season and the hustle bustle of the upcoming holidays.  A few quick tips: before doing any outdoor activities, make sure your body is ready for the workout.  Stretching beforehand will help avoid back strain.  Remember to bend from the knees, not your waist, and stay hydrated.  Treat minor pain with ice and if it persists, call our office for an appointment.  Chiropractic care is an excellent, non-drug choice for injury prevention and healing!

-- Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds

P.S. In recognition of Chiropractic Health Month, we are asking your help in spreading awareness of the benefits of chiropractic care through social media like Google, Yelp, Facebook and Yahoo.   Each person posting a review will be entered into our raffle to win a supply of a high-quality nutraMetrix nutritional supplement.

In addition, we are offering complimentary supplements to all who recommend our practice and whose referral comes in for a visit during October.   We thank you in advance for promoting the drug-free chiropractic lifestyle!

Chiropractic Provides Drug-free Approach to Healing and Wellness

Prescription medication abuse has reached epidemic proportions in our country. Millions of Americans use prescription painkillers, antidepressants and ADHD stimulants for non-medical use, often with tragic consequences when mixed with other drugs or taken with alcohol.

In fa
ct, according to the CDC, pain reliever abuse cause nearly three out of four prescription drug overdoses.  With this in mind, this year during Chiropractic Health Month, we are raising awareness of the benefits of chiropractic's whole-person, patient-centered approach that provides a drug-free means to healing and wellness.

Unlike opioid medications which numb the pain, or ADHD stimulants that mask true symptoms, chiropractic gets to the source of the problem helping to correct any misalignments and remove interferences in the central nervous systems that are triggering pain, neurological disorders or overall poor health. Chiropractic's whole-body philosophy involves dietary, fitness, ergonomics and other lifestyle advice to help the body heal itself.

From relieving ear infections, to managing blood pressure, to alleviating pain and attention disorder symptoms, chiropractic is an excellent wellness choice that helps the body heal naturally and function optimally without drugs or invasive procedures.  (Check out the many researched benefits of chiropractic adjustments.)

Nicole's Fall Favorite Oatmeal Recipe

Fueling a Smarter, More Productive Brain

by Nicole Petrocelli, RD

I am a working wife and mother so therefore I am a girl on the go! A lot of my clients share a common trait -- they're TOO BUSY to eat in the morning. My advice to everyone is the same: "Start Your Day Off Right; Start with a Healthy Breakfast!"
Those who begin their day with a healthy breakfast tend to:
* meet their daily nutritional needs
* maintain a healthy weight
* have lower blood cholesterol levels
* make fewer visits to the doctor for gastro-
   intestinal problems
* tend to have more strength and endurance,
   better
concentration and problem-solving
   abilities.

Retrain Your Brain & Change Your Life

A healthy brain is able to switch gears throughout the work or school day, speeding up when learning new material or tasks, slowing down for sleep and running in idle gear for routine activities.  Studies show the majority of people with ADHD have a specific brain-wave "dysregulation" that essentially causes the brain to remain "stuck" in slow gear.
Click here to learn about brain-wave dysregulation and ADHD.

Prescription medications like ADHD stimulants
that are so widely touted in mainstream advertising speed up slower brain-wave patterns.  Unfortunately, while these drugs may temporarily increase focus and hyperactivity, symptoms quickly return when the medications wear off. Treating ADHD with pharmaceuticals is a long-term plan often accompanied by unwanted side effects that may outweigh benefits; for some it may mean a lifetime dependence on medications.

Neurofeedback is an effective, non-drug choice for ADHD.  It rewards the brain when it produces high brain-wave patterns through a video playback therapy.   The more the brain is rewarded, the better it learns to stay in high gear when needed for concentration and focus. Rated an Evidence-Based Level 1 Best Support Intervention by the American Academy of Pediatrics, neurofeedback is non-invasive and has no side effects.

If you or your child is struggling with attention problems, call our office to learn how BrainCore Neurofeedback can help retrain your brain naturally to reach optimal learning potential.  This month we are offer $75 off a QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram).  A "Q" maps the brain, identifying areas of dysregulation, providing critical data for retraining abnormal brain waves that underlie ADHD symptoms.

Breast Cancer Hot Flashes? Acupuncture Provides Best Relief

Promising news for breast cancer survivors who experience severe hot flashes: electroacupuncture has been shown to be more effective than anti-seizure medications often used off-label to manage episodes of flushing, sweating, racing heartbeat and intense heat sensations.

University of Pennsylvania researchers utilized embedded needles to deliver weak electrical currents to patients suffering severe hot flashes due to estrogen-targeting treatment therapies. Results were compared to the test groups, including one that received gabapentin, an anti-seizure medication used off-label to manage hot flash episodes.   Participants in the electroacupuncture group experienced a sustained abatement of hot flashes after the 8-week treatment period, without the drowsiness, dizziness and headaches associated with gabapentin.

Lori Fortunato LAc, our wellness team acupuncturist, is experienced in treating women suffering from hot flashes, PMS and other hormonal fluctuations. Private pay patients who schedule a visit this month with Lori will receive $25 off an initial treatment. Call the office to book your appointment today.

Concussion and CTE

Concussion continues to make headline news as brain autopsies of former NFL players revealed that 87 out of 91 suffered from  Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative condition resulting from repeated blows to the head that cause concussion. CTE symptoms often are not noticeable until many years later and can stem from injuries sustained during high school or college play.  CTE causes memory loss, impaired judgment, aggression, depression, suicidal tendencies and eventually progressive dementia.  Sadly, many have taken their own lives rather than live with the pain and deterioration of their brains.

Concussion is a brain injury that can have permanent repercussions if not managed properly. If your child is playing sports, visit our office for a
to get an accurate reading on his/her neurological health. In the unfortunate event of injury, the baseline provides comparative scores that help with rehabilitation therapy. Schedule your appointment today with Dr. Reynolds: 631.265.1223.   Special fall season pricing $100 (reg. $325). Expires 10/31/15.
