Vertigo Triggers On-Course Collapse of PGA Tour Star

If you've been following men's golf this summer, you probably witnessed the on-course struggles of Australian golfer Jason Day as his battle with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) literally knocked him off his feet during the 2015 US Open. In the US, it is estimated that 69 million people suffer from vestibular disorders like vertigo which causes chronic dizziness and balance issues.

BPPV is the most common type of vertigo and is typically triggered by calcium carbonate crystals that dislodge from the inner ear and settle in the inner ear canals. Medications are often prescribed for BPPV which may help with the symptoms, but do not correct the cause. Dr. Reynolds utilizes a simple, non-invasive procedure known as the Epley maneuver on his vertigo patients which helps move the crystals out of the canal, alleviating spinning, dizziness and disequilibrium -- without prescription medication.

Recent research has also confirmed that acupuncture is an effective and safe treatment option for vertigo. If you are experiencing dizziness, nausea and spinning sensations, contact our office to learn how our team can help restore your health and get your life back in balance!

It's Football Training Season -- Time to Get Baselined!
Visit Our Office For A Sports Baseline Neurological Assessment
football-player-night.jpg

It's August and NFL players and student athletes are heading to the field for preseason training. If you're a parent of an athlete, you know full well the risk of concussion is the unfortunate and scary reality for practically every contact sport. According to the Center For Disease Control, concussions have risen 200 percent among teens ages 14 to 19 in the last decade. If left undetected, concussions can result in long-term brain damage and may even prove fatal.

If your child participates in contact sports, come in for a Sports Baseline Neurological Assessment with Dr. Reynolds to establish your child's normal cognitive baseline via a
Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) brain map and clinical neurological evaluation. If in the unfortunate event a concussion is suspected down the road, the Sports Baseline Test helps determine whether results have changed from the original baseline assessment and aids in a post-concussion recovery plan.

This month we are running a preseason special, just $150 for the assessment (a $325 value.) Call to make your appointment or to learn more about concussion prevention and recovery. 631.265.1223

FDA Toughens NSAIDs Warnings About Heart Attack and Stroke Risk

More reasons to choose chiropractic, acupuncture and other natural therapies for pain relief: mounting evidence shows that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the risk of heart attack and stroke between 10-50 percent when taken on a regular basis and the risk may begin within just a few weeks of starting to take an NSAID.

Researchers also note the risk for cardiovascular incidents can even occur after short term use as well. FDA is mandating that drug makers change packaging language on NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen from "may cause" to "cause" an "increased risk of serious heart thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may occur early in treatment and may increase with duration of use."

Non-drug therapies like chiropractic are preferable for alleviating pain and can have added heart health benefits too. In addition to correcting subluxations that can cause pain and muscle spasms, chiropractic helps activate under-functioning parts of the brain to improve brain function which helps to reduce blood pressure naturally!

Trans Fats Banned-- Great News! But What's Next?
chocolate-curl-cake.jpg

FDA's recent ban of cholesterol-raising trans fats in processed foods is good news for Americans and has the potential to prevent 10,000 to 20,000 heart attacks each year. Food companies have a three year deadline to oust partially hydrogenated oils from their products, so it is important to remain diligent about reading labels, especially since current regulations permit "0 trans fat" labeling for foods that have less than .5 of trans fat per serving!

Many manufacturers and restaurants are touting "trans fat-free" foods, but this begs the question "what is replacing the trans fats?" Chemically altered "interesterified fats" may be the new kid on the block, but it too raises health concerns similar to those associated with trans fats. Our suggestion: limit your intake of processed foods, or better yet, eliminate them from your diet. Eat natural, organic foods; use butter instead of margarine, coconut oil for cooking, and do your own baking!

Confused about your diet? Come in for a nutritional consult. We'll help we create a personalized dietary guideline that will support your journey to optimal health.

Antibiotics Raise a Child's Risk for Juvenile Arthritis
doctor_pills.jpg

A new study out of Rutgers University has found that children and teens prescribed antibiotics had roughly twice the risk of developing juvenile arthritis compared to children the same age who were not prescribed the drugs. Researchers noted that the risk was greatest within a year of receiving antibiotics and increased with the number of courses prescribed.

The study builds on previous studies showing that antibiotics could predispose children to develop other chronic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, as well as drug-resistant infections which kill 23,000 Americans each year.

Antibiotics are widely over-prescribed for many childhood illnesses including the common ear infection. Infections of the inner ear typically respond well to chiropractic care which helps facilitate drainage of the pooled fluids that become infected, allowing the body to attack the infection more efficiently and effectively without medication, and helps prevent painful relapses. Chiropractic care for children is a safe and natural way to keep children naturally healthy and help them grow to their fullest potential.
