Neurofeedback Training Helps Our Concussion Patient Regain His Health
"Life is Much More Enjoyable"
A serious football concussion sidelined our patient Thomas not only from the game, but from a full year of school. Chronic abdominal pain and insomnia from the initial concussion made it impossible for him to leave his room. Depression set in as traditional western medicine failed to improve his condition; and perhaps even more disheartening were the doctors who actually suggested Thomas may be "faking" his pain.
Thomas came in to our office for a quantitative electronencephologram (QEEG) brain map which revealed brain-wave dysregulation that signaled chronic pain. Within the first week of neurofeedback training, he was able to sleep and 2-3 months later his abdominal pain dissipated. His depression is gone -- he's the same person he used to be, back in school and enjoying life! It was a long road to recovery, and we are proud to have been part of the healing process!

Healing the Invisible Wounds of War with CAM Therapies
There is hope on the horizon for a drug-free future for our returning warriors as The Veterans Administration (VA) begins to embrace Eastern Medicine to address anxiety, depression, insomnia and hypervigilance associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Yoga, meditation and acupuncture are now advocated by the VA as an effective complementary approach to calm an over-activated sympathetic nervous system that triggers PTSD symptoms.
Breathing exercises, asanas or postures, movement, relaxation and meditation associated with yoga help to increase a sense of awareness, safety and self-control. Acupuncture has been found to be an effective two-pronged treatment, helping to alleviate symptoms and improve sleep as well as for addiction treatment to reduce dependence on prescribed medications for PTSD.
A registered yoga teacher, Dr. Chiappino often prescribes specific yoga asanas when working with patients with PTSD or other stress issues to help establish mental balance. Neurofeedback therapy is another effective tool to help those with PTSD break negative thought patterns and establish healthy new brain-wave patterns. Neurofeedback is non-invasive and does not produce dangerous side effects like those associated with traditional pharmacological treatment for PTSD.
We are honored to help our heroes regain their health and their lives. Please contact our office to learn more about PTSD therapies and to take advantage of this month's neurofeedback special offer (see below).

Create a Wellness Plan to Make the Most of Your Summer
Summer is just over 100 days, but as we grow older it seems to slip by faster each year. In the blink of an eye, the leaves are falling and we are donning long pants and jackets. This year, why not create a summer wellness plan for you and your family to help keep you healthy and make the most of your precious time. Here are 5 tips to get you started:
1. Commit to mindful activities this summer. Unplug for a set period of time each day. Spend 30 minutes just enjoying nature, listening to music or some other pleasant activity. Focus on the present. Being mindful can help reduce stress, improve focus, increase immune function, working memory and executive decision making.
2. Stay active. Go for a hike, swim, take up a sport. Not only does walking burn off extra calories, it helps to lower disease risk and strengthen your heart, lungs and muscles. Swimming is a great non-weight bearing activity for those with chronic pain. Outdoor yoga hosted by many of our island's organic farms or vineyards can be a fun twist on a traditional yoga class.
3. Keep hydrated! Water is a natural detoxifier and helps prevent dehydration as well as muscle fatigue. A good rule of thumb for your water intake: divide your weight in half; this is the number of ounces you should consume each day.
4. Relax and rejuvenate! Unwind with a good book or treat yourself to a massage. Enjoy a free outdoor concert at one of our many beautiful parks and beaches; take in a outdoor play or movie; dine alfresco at a restaurant with a water view!
5. Visit a local farm stand. Stock up on fresh organic produce. Support your health while supporting our local farmers.
