Happy Spring!

Winter is behind us and the flowering ornamental trees tell us that spring has finally arrived! Enjoy the longer days of sunshine -- research shows that 30 minutes outside in warm weather resets the mind and can boost your mood. Conversely, spending time indoors on a pleasant day can actually decrease mood and cognitive style, which is linked to creative thinking.

Now that the frost is gone, it's a great time to get outside to sow your garden and boost your mood, too!

We'd like to wish all our moms a very Happy Mother's Day and as we celebrate Memorial Day, we honor those who have served or are serving our country.

ADHD Parenting Without Pills:
Retrain Faulty Connections Instead!
pills2.jpg

This past April, the Center For Disease Control (CDC) published the first national study on ADHD treatment methods among children from age 4-17 which revealed the alarming fact that half of all preschoolers with ADHD are medicated for the condition. Even more disturbing was a message about ADHD meds from CDC's principal deputy director who admitted, "We do not know what the long-term effects of psychotropic medication are on the developing brains and bodies of little kids."

Contrary to what the media and mainstream medical establishment tout, medication is not the first line of defense in children with attention disorders. ADHD drugs often produce undesirable side effects that can far outweigh the benefits, causing stomach pain, insomnia, poor appetite, "zombie-effects" and even suicidal thoughts in serious cases.

Utilizing behavioral therapies, adopting a protein and vitamin rich diet free of artificial foods and addressing abnormal brain-wave connections through neurofeedback training are effective non-drug approaches to getting to the source of ADHD and relieving symptoms. Why risk your child's long-term health with short-term psychotropic fixes when there are proven holistic alternatives? Forty years of research demonstrates the profound effects of neurofeedback.

If your child has been diagnosed with an attention disorder, why not opt for an ADHD therapy that science show us is safe and effective? Call us to learn more. 631.265.1223.

Poor Posture Contributes to Poor Health
texting-girl-sm.jpg

There's a good reason why your parents always told you not to slouch - and it's not for appearance sake! When you maintain good posture, your body is in a state of equilibrium, helping to support the spinal column and promote proper transport of nerve signals to the various parts of the body. A misaligned spine adds uneven stress to the back muscles, ligaments, discs and spinal joints, causing headache pain, back pain and fatigue. If not addressed, it can lead to overall decrease in brain and organ function.

Texting, cradling cell phones, computer use, gaming and slouched sitting while viewing tv tend to be some of the big culprits; prolonged time spent with each can cause the head to shift forward, adding up to 30 pounds of abnormal weight and pulling the entire spine out of alignment. Extended improper sitting can also exacerbate the problem and trigger other health issues like respiratory and vascular problems. In fact, sitting from 8-12 hours a day has been found to actually increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 90%! Taking periodic microbreaks -- getting up to walk or even just stand every 20 minutes-- can help relieve muscle tension and increase energy.

A chiropractic posture analysis can help determine if any pain you're experiencing is related to your body stance. In addition to correcting any misalignment, we can offer exercises to help you strengthen core postural muscles and recommend proper postures during your activities to help reduce your risk of injury. Boost Your Child's Brain Power This Summer
Register Today for BrainCore Brain Camp
children-smiling-sm.jpg

Many kids are involved in summer sports camps that provide a great opportunity to engage in a wide range of physical, social, creative and other skill-building activities. If you are still deciding what to do with your children this summer, consider this: studies show students lose an estimated two months of grade level equivalency in math computation abilities during the summer months. While it's important to provide children with a physical outlet, particularly after our harsh winter, it's equally important to engage them in stimulating educational activities to avoid learning loss.

BrainCore Summer Brain Camp is an ideal program to prevent the summer slide, especially for children with learning, attention or behavioral difficulties. Our 12-week program helps strengthen healthy brain-wave patterns and retrain abnormal patterns that trigger symptoms associated with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, anxiety, learning and other neurological disorders. Neurofeedback training 2-3x per week can help your child retain learning and increase attention and focus and address other behavioral or mood issues he/she is experiencing--without invasive procedures or medications. Our flexible training hours can work with your child's camp schedule, enabling him/her to have the best of both worlds -- exercising the body while fine-tuning the brain.
Training slots are limited so call today. 631.265.1223.

Having a Happy, Healthy and Holistic Pregnancy
smile-beach-couple.jpg

Pregnancy is an exciting time during a woman's life, but weight gain as well as structural and hormonal changes often cause aches, pain and nausea that can make those nine months long and uncomfortable.

Proper alignment during pregnancy helps support a healthy nervous system and optimal spinal function which are crucial to baby's development and essential to the well-being and comfort of mom. Prenatal
chiropractic can help ensure spinal alignment as well as establish pelvic balance to provide optimal room for baby's growth and development. Prenatal massage is another great therapy for stress management as well as helping to reduce swelling, improve sleep and, of course for relaxation. Acupuncture treatments can help quell morning sickness and alleviate pain and discomfort, as well as induce labor. (Check with your insurance carrier as this is a benefit covered under many plans.)

The prenatal months are an amazing time of change and anticipation. Gentle, safe holistic therapies can help you feel and function at your best and make these special pre-baby months memorable. Help make your pregnancy the best it can be. Come in this month for a prenatal chiropractic visit and receive a complimentary prenatal massage from our licensed massage therapist Alaina White. We are also offering moms-to-be $20 off their initial acupuncture visit with our licensed acupuncturist Lori Fortunato LAc (private pay patients). Call the office to schedule your appointment.
