September 2014
Happy Labor Day!

Today marks the unofficial end of summer, but technically we have a few more weeks to enjoy some outdoor fun! We hope you made some time to relax with family and friends and enjoyed the beautiful weather this summer! Forecasters are hinting at chillier temps mid to late September, so make the most of the days ahead and plan some fun outings before cooler air heads our way!

This week is also back to school. If your district offers a music program, consider signing your child up to study an instrument. Studies show learning to play an instrument strengthens brain functions in multiple areas that boosts emotional and intellectual development. We wish all our patients heading back to school a successful and happy year of learning and development!

It's estimated that 33% of Americans aged 40 years and older have experienced a vestibular disorder such as dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, ear ringing, hearing and vision issues and other problems. These symptoms can severely affect common daily tasks like bathing, eating and dressing as well as concentrating and functioning in the workplace. Children also suffer from the disorder; in addition to impairing motor development and balance, a vestibular deficit may cause poor gaze stability that inhibits children from learning to read.

Computerized balance testing can provide an accurate, digital assessment of a person's balance difficulties. If a balance disorder is detected, Chiropractic Neurological care and vestibular therapies can help restore the health of the vestibular/balance system without drugs or invasive procedures.

If you are experiencing unexplained disorientation, dizziness, clumsiness or other related symptoms, we encourage you to come in for a visit during the week of September 15th to take advantage of our free balance evaluation.

Beating Insomnia With Neurofeedback
Dr. Chiappino explains the benefits of brain training
sleep

The changing season's shorter periods of daylight and longer nights often impact our ability to achieve a restful sleep. Sleep is essential for our nervous system to work properly; deprivation starves the body's ability to heal, repair and regenerate, affecting a person's mental stability, performance and even weight.

The mainstream medical approach is to prescribe medications like "Z" drugs to treat insomnia. While these may be effective in the short term, they can produce uncomfortable side effects, as well as sleepwalking, memory issues, serious addiction problems and disturbance of normal sleep patterns.

Natural remedies are the preferred route for addressing bouts of poor sleep; however if your situation is chronic, it may be due to hyper aroused brain-wave patterns. A quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) can help determine if these "rogue" brain waves are triggering your insomnia. Neurofeedback can retrain the dysregulated brain waves and form new healthy patterns that will help your body naturally achieve a restful state at the appropriate time -- without medications and their side effects.

Dr. Chiappino explains the science behind sleep disorders and BrainCore neurofeedback training in this video. Call the office to learn how we can help you achieve the restful sleep you need to feel sharp and refreshed to face the new day. 631.265.1223.

September is Pain Awareness Month
Acupuncture provides safe alternative to addictive meds

Does chronic pain have a hold on your life? If you are one of the 100 million Americans that suffer on a daily basis, you know that ongoing pain affects every aspect of your life, making it difficult to work, sleep, maintain relationships and participate in simple activities. Chronic pain has become a major health issue in this country, affecting more Americans that heart disease, diabetes and cancer combined.

September is dedicated to raising awareness of treatment therapies for alleviating pain. Addictive pain medications like opiods can set off a series of reactions within the body that make it difficult to get pain relief and/or quit. For some, long-term use can actually make the body more sensitive to pain. Natural therapies like acupuncture can relieve discomfort and help the body reach optimal health by stimulating the central nervous system to release natural chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain that alter bodily systems, pain and other biological processes.

Our acupuncturists Lori Fortunato and Ralph Hinkson are highly-experienced pain specialists. If you've tried conventional medicine with minimal results, acupuncture can be an effective, non-drug pain relief therapy to help regain your health. Contact the front desk for more information or to make an appointment with our pain management team. Many insurance companies cover the cost of acupuncture. We can check with your carrier prior to your appointment. If we find it is not a covered service, we are offering $10 off your first visit during the month of September.

Chiropractic care, neurofeedback training and medical massage are other effective pain relief therapies. Oftentimes a combination of one or two of these modalities can be a powerful healing approach to alleviate pain and increase your body's mobility and resilience. Call us for more information on pain management strategies. 631.265.1223.
