April 2014

April is Autism Awareness month. Autism is the fastest-growing, serious developmental disability in the United States today. Increased awareness and funding can help support families on the spectrum. Check out Autism Speaks' website for suggestions on how to help raise the profile of autism this month.

Research suggests that the earlier a child with autism receives therapy, the better the chance of limiting their deficits and maximizing their potential. We have been working with children on the spectrum for many years, providing non-drug therapies that are effective in addressing many of the symptoms of autism such as stimming, flapping, attention and gut issues. If you have a loved one with an autism spectrum disorder, call us to learn how to help your child achieve his/her learning potential naturally.

Autism Numbers Are On the Rise -- Again

Latest figures just out from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) now place the autism rate in the U.S. at 1 in 68, a 29% increase from just 2 years ago. Although the increase is attributed by some to better diagnosis, other experts believe environmental factors in addition to genetics play a role.

Meanwhile, research just published in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals that autism may likely start during pregnancy. Tissue samples of pediatric autistic brains examined post mortem revealed patches of abnormal gene expression in the cortex, an area of the brain known to develop in the second trimester. It is hopeful that the finding will help bolster research on how genes control brain development and the link to autism. This finding also suggests that treatment should begin early in childhood, when the brain is better able to rewire itself to work around damaged areas.

Early intervention is key to a child's future. Neurofeedback therapy can help retrain abnormal brain-wave patterns in order to improve attention, mood, eye contact, stimming and other behavioral issues associated with autism. Contact the office to learn more about BrainCore therapy.

Australian Hospital Survey: Acupuncture As Effective As Valium

A recent trial of acupuncture in four Australian emergency departments revealed that the ancient Chinese healing therapy was as effective as analgesic drugs in relieving pain in the lower-back, sprained ankles and migraine.

In addition to pain relief, a researcher noted that study participants treated with acupuncture were also more apt to leave hospital earlier, suggesting acupuncture sped up emergency department care.
