March is Brain Injury Awareness Month
Brain injury is one of the most common causes of disability and death in the U.S. and can be the result of sports or recreation injuries, accidents or a simple fall. From contusion to concussion, head traumas run the gamut of severity, causing a wide range of functional short- or long-term changes affecting thinking, sensation, language, emotions or mobility. Unfortunately for some, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the beginning of a lifelong disease process that can develop into Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease or other brain disorders with age.
The best approach to TBI of course is prevention. Wearing helmets and other protective equipment for sports, buckling up in the car, preventing falling hazards in the elderly can go a long way to staying safe and healthy. However accidents do happen, and when it involves a head injury it is of utmost importance to have your condition evaluated immediately, as even a seemingly mild 'ding' or a bump on the head can be serious. Rest is important in the healing process. For athletes, returning to the game needs to take a back seat to resting your brain.
Chiropractic Neurology offers a brain-based rehabilitative approach for TBI, helping the deficient area of the brain to regain normalized function through a variety of brain-based exercises. If you or a loved one is suffering from TBI, contact Dr. Reynolds to discuss how chiropractic neurological care be an integral part of the healing process.

Slip and Fall Prevention Tips
The recent Nor'easters and arctic weather have made traveling throughout the region extremely hazardous. In our practice, we have seen an uptick in the number of patients with slip and fall injuries due to black ice. Below are some cautionary reminders to take when venturing outside:
- First, wear shoes or boots that provide traction on slippery surfaces.
- Take notice of your every step and be alert for changing surfaces --make sure what looks like snow is not slippery ice.
- Be aware of black ice on streets and in parking lots.
- Take small, deliberate and flat steps.
- Place sand on your own walkways to increase traction.
- Leave ample time to arrive at your destination to ensure you are not hurried and unsafe.
As always, call us right away if you've had a fall or are experiencing pain.

Consumer Reports: Chiropractic Worked For Our Readers!
Chiropractic care scored high in a recent Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center survey. Of the 14,000 subscribers polled who experienced lower-back pain, almost 60% reported they were highly satisfied with the chiropractic care they received for back pain.
Chiropractic outperformed all other treatments, including care from the participants' primary care doctors. Consumers notes "a surprising number of the lower-back-pain sufferers we surveyed said they were disappointed with what the primary care doctor could do to help."
Are you satisfied with the care you have received? Let us know! We'd love to get your feedback! Post a comment on our Facebook page and you'll be entered into our March massage raffle.

Sleep Awareness Week is March 2-9
Daylight Savings is March 9th-- time to spring forward! While most of us welcome this harbinger of spring and the promise of longer, light-filled days, the lost hour of sleep wreaks havoc on those with sleep issues.
Proper sleep is essential to mental and physical health, yet most adults do not achieve the 7-9 hours required for our nervous system to work properly. It's estimated that 9 million American who suffer with sleep disorders turn to medication for a good night's rest.
If you are struggling to get shut eye, there are natural alternatives like massage therapy that can increase serotonin levels to produce the melatonin necessary to help you achieve restful sleep. BrainCore neurofeedback therapy also can help regulate abnormal brain waves that trigger insomnia. Studies have also shown that acupuncture is an effective therapy for insomnia.
Call us to learn to how we can help you sleep like a baby... naturally!
