February 2014

February is Heart Health month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but it is preventable and controllable. Chiropractic care combined with good nutrition and exercise can be a powerful ally in the fight against heart disease.

This month we also celebrate Valentine's Day -- if you're stumped on a gift for a loved one, check out our Chiro-tine special below!

Chiropractic Bolsters Cardio Health

It's a well-known fact that nutritious diet, proper exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can help keep your heart in good working order and reduce your chances of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other health issues related to cardiovascular disease. But did you know that regular chiropractic care is beneficial to your blood pressure?

Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics revealed that study participants receiving chiropractic adjustments experienced a drop in blood pressure and anxiety levels-- in every single case! The results suggest that chiropractic adjustments affect the autonomic nervous system, the part of the nervous system that directs the heart rate, helping to lower blood pressure naturally.

Addicted to Food?
Increase Your Willpower/Decrease Your Weight Holistically

New research out last month suggests that over 8 percent of middle-aged women may be addicted to food.

Like addictive drugs, highly rewarding foods trigger the release of dopamine, the "feel-good" brain chemical, fueling the desire to repeat the pleasurable experience by quickly eating again. Signals of fullness and satisfaction are overridden by the dopamine's reward signals, urging us to eat even if we're not hungry.

BrainCore neurofeedback therapy combined with PURE ProActive is a healthy, non-drug approach to weight loss and health issues associated with excessive weight. BrainCore addresses the addiction aspect of eating disorders, correcting the abnormal brain-wave patterns that interfere with the balance of neurotransmitters like dopamine which trigger binge eating. PURE ProActive's lifestyle program of whole organic foods cleanse and balance the body to help you lose weight and keep it off for good. It's a winning combination that can help you shed unwanted pounds, feel healthy and revitalized! Call the office to get started on your weight loss journey!

S.A.D. Got You Singing the Blues?
pensive-fist-man.jpg

Do the short days of winter sap you of your energy, make you feel tired, moody or even depressed? If your only wish is to hibernate until spring, you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder or "S.A.D." Seasonal changes like reduced sunlight can diminish levels of neural transmitters seratonin, triggering depression or moodiness, or melatonin, disrupting sleep patterns.

We recommend natural therapies to counteract the symptoms of S.A.D. beginning with a chiropractic evaluation to determine your overall well-being and to reduce any nerve interferences in the spine due to a subluxation. Massage, supplements, regular daily exercise and BrainCore neurofeedback can play a role in putting the "spring" back into your step!

Tips on Beating the Winter Blues:
Latest Acetaminophen Warning:
High Doses May Lead to Liver Damage

FDA just last month issued new warnings about possible liver damage from the pain reliever acetaminophen. Health professionals are now advised to cease prescribing combination drugs that contain more than 325 milligrams of acetaminophen to avoid unintentional overdose that may destroy the liver. This new news comes on the heals of FDA warnings last August that the drug can cause a potentially lethal skin rash known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

If you're experiencing pain, it's important to locate the cause of your issue. Remember that medicines like acetaminophen merely mask the problem. Chiropractic addresses the pain at the source to help relieve your symptoms naturally.

Preventing Winter Sports Injuries

The recent cold snap has made for great conditions for skating, skiing sledding and other fun winter sports. However, not being prepared before shredding the slopes can cause painful muscle spasms, strains or tears. Light aerobic activity such as jogging, biking or fast walking for about 7-10 minutes can help avoid injury.
