Poetry Leaves ...
Help us celebrate National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month and to celebrate the Waterford Library and the Waterford Area Cultural Council are sponsoring a street poetry exhibition. The exhibition will be hosted by Waterford Township on the grounds of the Civic Center campus.

Original poetry will hang in the trees throughout the month to be read and enjoyed by all who walk the campus or pass through on foot. A booklet containing the entries in the exhibit will be printed and available for purchase.

You are invited to a reception to launch this project, Thursday, January 9th, 4:30p-6:00p, in the Library's Community Room. Whether your write poetry, read poetry, or just want to meet new friends, you are welcome to join us.

To submit original poetry for the exhibition, complete the submittal form on our website, attach it to your entry and drop them off at the Library's Circulation Desk during normal business hours. (Forms are also available at all public service desks.)

News of Note

Grant awarded by the Breakfast Optimist Club of Waterford

The Breakfast Optimists Club of Waterford awarded a grant of $500 to the Library to help expand our Children's collection of materials for early readers, kindergarten through 3rd grade.

With the development of the Common Core Curriculum for public schools, which has been adopted by the Waterford School District, publishers now have available several non-fiction titles for students at these reading levels. Subjects of these books include country profiles, animals, nature, careers, and famous Americans in a variety of professions.

Our children's librarians have used the proceeds of this grant from the Optimists to purchase _____ titles at beginner reading levels that will help students in early elementary grades with their school assignments. They have been processed and are now on the shelves ready for you to check them out.

Did You Know...

2014 is an anniversary year for the Library

The Waterford Township Public Library was established by a resolution adopted
passed by the Township Board of Trustees in September 1963.

On January 14, 1964 we opened our doors for the first time in our current location on the Civic Center campus. At the time our address was 5168 Tubbs Road. The building was a modest 4,000 square feet and the collection was equally modest in size.

During the coming year we will be celebrating our 50th birthday with a variety of projects and special events. These will be posted in this newsletter and on our website.

Looking forward to celebrating with you.
