 Geek the Library Week
September 22 - 28

This spring and summer we have been participating in Geek the Library, the national campaign to promote library awareness. We've had a lot of fun with it, and the increase in your visits to the Library, attendance at programs, and numbers of items checked out indicate that you have too.

We will be closing our project this month in conjunction with National Library Card Sign-up Month with a week's worth of activities.
  • Fines amnesty. Fines will be forgiven for any Waterford materials returned this week. Does not include items:
    • Damaged or incomplete
    • Lost and not returned
    • Owned by other libraries

Waterford cardholders who have outstanding fines on Waterford materials returned prior to the amnesty week can request that these fines be forgiven when visiting the Library in person during Geek the Library Week.

  • Raffle drawings 3 times each day for a "Geek Grab Bag" filled with fun things. To enter the drawing complete a Geek postcard noting "Why I geek the Library" in 10 words or less, include your name and phone number, and drop your entry in the box in the raffle box in the circulation lobby. (One entry per person please.)
  • After-school drop-in crafts in our Children's craft room. Children's staff are offering face painting, temporary "Get your geek on" tattoos and a chance to create your own "I geek..." poster with our craft supplies.
  • Final Photo Session  for "I geek..." posters, Wednesday, September 25 from 4;30p-6:30p in the circulation lobby. (See samples of posters in this newsletter.) Bring a prop of what you geek. A $10 donation will get you a copy of your poster.
  • "What do you geek?" t-shirts for sale at attractive prices. Youth and Adults sizes available. Ask our Circulation Services Staff.
  • Giveaways  including "I geek my library card" buttons, bookmarks, stickers, bumper stickers and temporary tattoos.
Looking forward to seeing you during Geek the Library Week.

Office 2010 has arrived!

We've completed the upgrade of our public computers to Office 2010. This version of Office includes all of the programs that were previously available on our public computers including:
  • Word
  • Excel
  • Powerpoint
  • Publisher

If you haven't used Office 2010, there are some changes to the user interface that may take some time and effort to learn. Our librarians are available to assist you with that transition. Or you can view some online guides to learn about those changes before you get started.

The Library had our first ever Amateur Digital Photography Contest this summer.

Our theme was "Summer in Waterford."  Entries were submitted via email between June 1 and July 15.  There were two age categories: Teens and Adults.  Four teens and ten adults entered the contest, with most submitting two entries each. Our judges, Mari Latozas of Photography by Mari and Darren Graunstadt, president of the Waterford Cultural Council (and owner of the L.A. Café) chose a winner in each category.  Those two winners each won a cash prize of $50.

Elizabeth Flatoff was the winner in the Teen category with her photo "Summer Picnic at Hess Hathaway Park". Amanda Gloth was the adult prize winner with her photo "Father and son celebrate Independence Day by watching fireworks on Maceday Lake".

Voting for a "people's choice" winner in each age category was held on our website and our Facebook Page.

Elizabeth Flatoff was the winner in the Teen category of the People's Choice voting(making her a double winner!) with her entry "Dog Days of Summer." Larry Golden was the winner in the Adult category of the People's choice voting with his entry  "Busy Bee on Hedge Flowers".

All four of the winning photos are currently on display in the circulation lobby of the Library.
