Friends & Fundraising

The Waterford Friends of the Library provide support in many ways. One of the most important is through their fundraising projects.

Used Book Sales are the mainstay of these efforts. In fact, you have a chance to buy gently used copies of favorite titles or new reads as holiday gifts at their last book sale of the year, Saturday, December 1st.

The book bags on sale at the Library's Circulation Desk, for $2 each, are another fundraiser and will also make great gifts this holiday season.

Cleaning out attics, basements or repurposing an unused bedroom?Recyclables from such projects can be taken to the Royal Oak Recycling Center on M-59 in White Lake Township. You can designate the Waterford Friends of the Library as the beneficiary of the proceeds of your recycling contribution.

Shoppers at VGs can drop off their register receipts at the Library. The Friends collect these receipts and turn them in for cash as part of the VGs community share program.

Interested in being a part of the FUN of fundraising? Consider joining the Friends of the Library. The annual membership luncheon is set for Saturday, January 19, 2013. Prospective members are welcome.

Our thanks to the voters in Waterford your support in renewing our operating millage in August for another 10 years. We look forward to continuing to serve you.

News of Note
Improvements underway
With the renewal of the Library's dedicated millage this summer we are able to use a portion of our fund balance (savings) for capital improvements. The 3 areas of greatest need are
  1. Replacement of the roof. Over the past few years we have experienced an increasing number of leaks in several locations throughout the building. An assessment of the condition of the entire roof made in August 2011 determined that we needed to have the entire roof replaced. This project should be completed by mid-December. We are looking forward to dry conditions and the benefits of improved insulation as a result.
  2. Purchases for the collections. We are working to purchase more materials for all the collections in a variety of formats including eBooks. This includes more copies of best sellers to reduce the wait-times for those in holds queues for new titles.
  3. Upgrades to computer services. Replacements and upgrades of equipment and software deferred over the past few years are being implemented to provide our users with the best experience possible.

You may also have seen new faces at our circulation desk this fall. Two new Library Clerks in our Circulation Department are Ashley Warner, a long-time shelver at the Library, and Sara Schorling, formerly with Parks & Recreation at the Nature Center. Please join us in welcoming them.

Did You Know...

The Library has a document scanner available for public use? If you have a paper document or photo that you need to turn into a digital file, bring it in and one of the librarians at the Adults' Reference Desk will be happy to show you how to use the scanner. If you have a flash drive, please bring it with you, as the scanner is set up to save the file created to a flash drive. If you don't have a flash drive, you can purchase one at the desk.
