TEEN WINTER READING
Teens in grades 7-12 may participate in Teen Winter Reading, through Dec. 31. Just read a book from the Library and be entered in a drawing for a $50 Best Buy gift card. Details are with Teen Librarian, Aysha Haq, at 219.931.5100, ext. 351.

YOUTH SERVICES
We offer early literacy programs for infants through age 5, as well as programs for youth and tweens through grade 6. Music Monday, Lego Club, Kids Can 2, and Tween Chat and Craft are just a few of the programs we offer. In 2016, HPL will offer a Sensory Storytime. We invite educators to contact us to arrange for a school visit or library tour. Just call Youth Services at 219.931.5100, ext. 336.

Essay Contest: Hammond Reads announces its 15th annual Essay Contest, which runs from Nov. 30 through Fri., Jan. 29, 2016 at 4 p.m. It's open to all Hammond residents, or any student or educator at a school in Hammond. See the contest flyer at right.


Usborne Book Fair: Hammond Reads is conducting an Usborne Book Fair fundraiser on Dec. 11 and 12 at REGIONAL Federal Credit Union on Kennedy Ave. Help Hammond Reads earn free books by making
a purchase as a holiday gift.
Grant opportunities

NEA Learning & Leadership Grants
Deadline: February 1, 2016

The NEA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the National Education Association, supports student success by helping public school educators work with key partners to build strong systems of shared responsibility.

The foundation invites applications for its Learning and Leadership Grants program, which supports professional development experiences such as summer institutes or action research; or grants to groups in support of collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, or mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment.

Grant amounts are $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups engaged in collegial study. All group grant applicants must include partner information.

To be eligible, applicants must be a public school educator in grades pre-K-12; a public school education support professional; or a faculty/staff member at a public institution of higher education. The foundation encourages education support professionals to apply. Preference will be given to members of the National Education Association.

Herb Society Grant for Educators
Deadline: Dec, 31, 2015


The Herb Society of America's mission is to promote the knowledge, use, and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing the experience of its members with the community.

Through the Grant for Educators program, the society will award a grant or two totaling up to $5,000 to a project(s) that enhances herbal education in school systems, communities, or in any public forum (electronic or person-to-person). To be eligible, projects must have  learning goals and a mechanism to measure educational outcomes.

Applications are requested from educators (formal or informal teachers), persons engaged/employed in botanical or horticultural activities, museum directors, botanical/garden writers, and small herbal business owners. Proposals from students will not be accepted.
