Effective Monday, Oct. 5, patrons will only be allowed to renew material twice. Instead of the extended 6 week period, an item can be checked out for four (4) additional weeks only. 

Special dates of note:
  • Thurs., Oct. 1, 8 & 15 at 4 pm: Youth Services begins a fun new program combining Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. While it is not necessary to attend all three sessions, we recommend doing so, as all  the projects build on each other.                
  • Fri., Oct. 2 at 11 am: Better than Google: Databases You Can Use - learn about databases available for writing and research.
  • Sat., Oct. 3 from noon-2 pm: Antique Appraisal - Valerie Macko of Macko Antique Galleries assesses and appraises your items. Limit of 5 items.
  • Mon., Oct. 5 at 6:30 pm: Novel Conversations discusses Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed.
  • Wed., Oct. 7 at 6:30 pm: Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Watch the film, Cesar Chavez. Labor leader, Oscar Sanchez, who knew Chavez, comments on the leaders depicted in the film.

Better Than Google! Databases You Can Use - Fri., Oct. 2 at 11 a.m.
A librarian talks you through databases at your disposal for writing and research.

Valerie Macko of Macko Antique Gallery assesses and appraises items. Limit 5 items. Thanks to the Friends of the Library for funding this program.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration - Wed., Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
View the film Cesar Chavez, about the efforts to organize migrant farm workers.
Before the film, labor leader, Oscar Sanchez remarks on those portrayed in the film. Mr. Sanchez, who knew Chavez,  is involved with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee. Thanks to the Friends of the Library for funding.

Better than Google: Scholarship Search - Fri., Oct. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
A librarian will show you how to find the scholarships and financial aid you'll need.

  • II: Getting Started with Ancestry - Mon., Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.Learn how to navigate Ancestry Library Edition, and how ALE compares to the individual subscription. This session is best taken in conjunction with Family History I, although it is not mandatory.  You  must register with Linda Swisher at 219-931-5100 x 310 or Carol Williams, x 345. Space is limited.

You'll get a list of job websites, along with tips on where to look for employment. 
 
Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes are 60-90 minutes in length.
Classes are free. Space is limited. Registration is required. 
  
E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.   Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and reserve a seat.
 
Internet Basics: An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with a computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Email Basics: Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Word Basics: Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Mouse Basics: Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy & paste; more. No experience required.

Intermediate and advanced classes last approximately 2 hours and are designed to sharpen existing skills. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic word processing is required to attend these sessions. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Word 2: Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Word 3: Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.

Banners in Word: Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

Intro to Excel: Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

PowerPoint: Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

Letters & Resumes: We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Book Sale Room is open during library hours. The library accepts donations of books, magazines, movies, and music. Just bring them to the library during regular hours.

The Foundation's current project is to raise enough funds to purchase the Mango Languages Database. Hammond residents and any HPL cardholder would have 24/7 access via smartphone, tablet or PC to language learning software, including more than 60 foreign language courses and 17 English as a Second Language courses, international foreign films, and more at no cost!
