Laura Lovell of North Shore Health Centers performs blood pressure checks on the last Monday of the month. 

 

Novel Conversations Book Group - 
Mon., Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madmen, and Murder by Charles Graeber. After his 2003 arrest, nurse Charlie
Cullen was dubbed "The Angel of Death" by the media. But Cullen 
was no mercy killer, nor was he a simple monster. Implicated in 
the deaths of as many as 300 patients, he was also perhaps the 
most prolific serial killer in U.S. history. Copies of the book may 
be checked out.

HHS president, Dr. Richard Barnes, and Ruth Swanson discuss the Historic Pullman District houses of Hammond. Open to the public.
Free Computer Classes 
Location: Computer Lab
  
Basic Classes are 60-90 minutes in length.
Classes are free. Space is limited. Registration is required. 
  
E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.   Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and reserve a seat.
 
Internet Basics: Mon., Sept. 14 at 2 p.m.
An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with a computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
 
Email Basics: Mon., Sept. 28 at 11 a.m.
Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. 
  
Word Basics: Tues., Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.
Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.    

Mouse Basics:  Mon., Oct. 5 at 11 a.m.
Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Intermediate and advanced classes last approximately 2 hours and are designed to sharpen your existing skills. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic
 word processing is required to attend these sessions. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.  
 
Word 2: Tues., Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.
Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.
 
Word 3: Tues., Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.
Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.
 
 
Banners in Word: Mon., Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!
 
Intro to Excel: Mon., Sept. 28 at 2 p.m.
 Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.
  
PowerPoint: Tues., Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.
Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.
 
Letters & Resumes: Mon., Sept. 14 at 11 a.m.
We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Visit us each Wednesday in September for a drop-in activity, and see Youth Services staff dressed wacky! Enter your name into a drawing for a prize each time you complete a drop-in activity and/or when you check out a book.

Do you want to learn how to use the computer, or brush up on computer skills? Join us for the first of three basic computer classes for homeschoolers. The class is limited to 15 children between ages 6 and 13. Please register by calling Youth Services at (219) 931-55100, Ext. 336.

Book Sale Room is open during library hours. The library accepts donations of books, magazines, movies, and music. Just bring them to the library during regular hours.

The Foundation's current project is to raise enough funds to purchase the Mango Languages Database. Hammond residents and any HPL cardholder would have 24/7 access via smartphone, tablet or PC to language learning software, including more than 60 foreign language courses and 17 English as a Second Language courses, international foreign films, and more at no cost!
