FamilyTime Entertainment presents a fun show about super heroes, including a museum of action figures, comic books, and more! Take the hilarious Superhero Tests and the Superhero Quiz.

 

Friday, July 17 from 2-4 p.m.:
Share your historic photos!

The Times announces a special hardcover book, Memories Along the South Shore: The Early Years. if you have historic general interest photos taken between the late 1800s until 1939, you can have then scanned to possibly appear in the book! Scanning sessions take place next week throughout the Region. Scanners are at HPL next Friday, July 17, from 2-4 p.m.

Adult Summer Reading Signup - every day during library hours

Summer Reading is for all ages! Six program levels serve newborns through adults. Read books and be eligible to win cool prizes! Mini-drawings are July 10 & July 31; grand prize drawing is Aug. 31.

Blood Pressure Screenings - Mon., July 27 from 2-4 p.m.  Laura Lovell of North Shore Health Centers performs blood pressure checks on the last Monday of the month. 

 

Novel Conversations Book Group - Mon., Aug. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
We'll talk about The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell.  Working as a typist for the NYC Police Department in 1923, Rose Baker documents confessions of harrowing crimes and struggles with changing gender roles while clinging to her Victorian ideals and searching for nurturing companionship before becoming obsessed with a glamorous newcomer and her world of bobbed hair, smoking and speakeasies. All are welcome to attend. Copies of the book are available for checkout.

Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes are 60-90 minutes in length.
Classes are free. Space is limited. Registration is required. 

E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.

Mouse Basics: 
Tues., July 14 at 6 p.m.
Mon., July 20 at 11 a.m.
Mon., Aug. 3 at 2 p.m.
Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

 

Internet Basics:

Tues., July 21 at 6 p.m.
Mon., July 27 at 11 a.m.
Mon., Aug. 10 at 2 p.m.

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with a computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
 

Email Basics:

Tues., July 21 at 2 p.m.
Tues., July 28 at 6 p.m.

Mon., Aug. 3 at 11 a.m.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. 
  

Word Basics:

Tues., July 28 at 2 p.m.
Mon., Aug. 10 at 11 a.m.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.  

  

Windows 8 Basics: 
Mon., July 13 at 11 a.m.|
Tues., Aug. 25 at 2 p.m.
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Intermediate and advanced classes last approximately 2 hours and are designed to sharpen your existing skills. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic word processing is required to attend these sessions. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

 

Word 3

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.
 
 

Banners in Word

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

 

Intro to Excel

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

  

PowerPoint

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

 

Letters & Resumes

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

The Foundation's current project is to raise enough funds to purchase the Mango Languages Database. The project is two-fold:
     (1) to raise enough to begin an annual subscription
     (2) to raise the remaining amount needed to fund a lifetime subscription. Hammond residents and any HPL cardholder would have 24/7 access via smartphone, tablet or PC to language learning software, including more than 60 foreign language ouses and 17 English as a Second Language courses, international foreign films, and more at no cost!
