Greetings!
Stop in now to sign up for Summer Reading. Read books and be eligible to win prizes! "Unmask" is the theme of the teen program. With six program levels serving all ages, there's something for everyone!
Coming up:
- Sat., June 27 from 9:30-4:30: Friends of the Library Half-Price Sale. Get bargains on books, magazines, movies and music. The Friends also have a book sale (not half-price) at the Eat Shop & Rock event, from 10-4 along Hohman Avenue.
- Tues., June 30 at 1:30 p.m.: Teen Shrinky Dink Craft. Teens in grades 7-12 use images, plastic and heat to make a cool craft. Details are with the youth librarian at Ext. 351.
- Mon., July 6 at 6:30 p.m.: Novel Conversations book group discusses Nell Freudenberger's The Newlyweds.
- Wed., July 8 from 11 am-1 p.m.: Digital Download Open House. Are you interested in downloading eBooks, magazines, and more, but not sure how to start? Bring your mobile device, and let us help!
- Sat., July 18 at 2 p.m.: The Superhero Show and Mini Museum features Thor's Helmet and Hammer, Green Lantern's Power Battery, Spiderman's Mask, and more. Take the hilarious Superhero Tests and the Superhero Quiz.

Summer Reading Signup - every day during library hours
Summer Reading is for all ages! Six program levels serve newborns through adults. Read books and be eligible to win cool prizes! ADULT THEME: "Escape the Ordinary." Mini-drawings are July 1 0& July 31; grand prize drawing is Aug. 31.

Blood Pressure Screenings - Mon., June 29 from 2-4 p.m. Laura Lovell from North Shore Health Centers performs blood pressure checks on the last Monday of the month.
Novel Conversations Book Group - Mon., July 6 at 6:30 p.m.
We'll talk about The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger. This is the story of a Bengalese woman who marries a man from Rochester, NY after they meet online. All are welcome to attend. Copies of the book are available for checkout.
Digital Downloads Open House - Wed., July 8 from 11 am-2 pm.

Free Computer Classes
Location: Computer Lab

Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
Mouse Basics:
Tues., July 14 at 6 p.m.
Mon., July 20 at 11 a.m.
Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.
Internet Basics:
Tues., July 21 at 6 p.m. Mon., July 27 at 11 a.m.
An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with a computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
Email Basics:
Tues., July 21 at 2 p.m. Tues., July 28 at 6 p.m.
Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
Word Basics:
Mon., July 6 at 11 a.m.Tues., July 28 at 2 p.m.
Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
Windows 8 Basics: Mon., July 13 at 11 a.m.
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Intermediate and advanced classes last approximately 2 hours and are designed to sharpen your existing skills. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic word processing is required to attend these sessions. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.
Word 3
Mon., July13 at 2 p.m.
Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.
Banners in Word
Tues., July 14 at 2 p.m.
Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!
Intro to Excel Mon., July 20 at 2 p.m. Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.
PowerPoint Mon., July 27 at 2 p.m.
Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.
Letters & Resumes
Tues., July 7 at 2 p.m.
We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

 Hammond Public Library Foundation About the Foundation: The Hammond Public Library Foundation's current project is to raise enough funds to purchase on behalf of the Library and its cardholders the Mango Languages Database. The project is two-fold: (1) to raise enough to begin an annual subscription (2) to raise the remaining amount needed to fund a lifetime subscription. Hammond residents and any HPL cardholder would have 24/7 access via smartphone, tablet or PC to language learning software, including more than 60 foreign language ouses and 17 English as a Second Language courses, international foreign films, and more at no cost!
