Coming up:

  • Sat., June 13: Downtown Hammond Art Walk
    HPL is one of 12 featured venues. We'll have flyers and maps to the venues. Watercolors by Kathy Los-Rathburn are exhibited. Meet her at an Afterparty at White Ripple Gallery in Hessville from 7-10 pm.
  • Thurs., June 18 at 11 am: Standard Bank & Trust representatives present a program in English and Spanish on credit repair, including the bank's credit builder loan program.
  • Thurs., June 18 at 6:30 p.m.: Film screening of No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie. SuperDeafy must reveal the man behind the cape to find true love and inspire a young deaf boy to believe in himself. The movie is open captioned. A discussion follows, and is sign language interpreted. Please register on Facebook for this program, or email Kristy, or call Linda at 219-931-5100, Ext. 310.

Blood Pressure Screenings - Mon., June 29 from 2-4 p.m.  Laura Lovell from North Shore Health Centers performs blood pressure checks on the last Monday of the month. 

 

Novel Conversations Book Group - Mon., July 6 at 6:30 p.m.
We'll talk about The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger.  This is the story of a Bengalese woman who marries a man from Rochester, NY after they meet online. All are welcome to attend. Copies of the book are available for checkout.

Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.  Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
 
Mouse Basics: 
Tues., July 14 at 6 p.m.

Mon., July 20 at 11 a.m.

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

 

Internet Basics:

Mon., June 15 at 11 a.m.
Tues., July 21 at 6 p.m.
Mon., July 27 at 11 a.m.

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with a computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
 

Email Basics:

Mon., June 22 at 11 a.m.
Tues., July 21 at 2 p.m.
Tues., July 28 at 6 p.m.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. 
  

Word Basics:

Tues., June 23 at 2 p.m.

Mon., July 6 at 11 a.m.
Tues., July 28 at 2 p.m.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.  

  

Windows 8 Basics: 
Tues., June 16 at 2 p.m.
Mon., July 13 at 11 a.m.
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Intermediate and advanced classes last approximately 2 hours and are designed to sharpen your existing skills. Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.
 
 

Banners in Word

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

 

Intro to Excel

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

 

Letters & Resumes

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Hammond Public Library Foundation
About the Foundation:
The purpose of the Hammond Public Library Foundation is to promote the development, expansion, and improvement of the Hammond Public Library facilities, services, and materials and to aid and assist in all facets of Hammond Public Library operations and for other charitable and educational purposes within the Library.

Our current project is to raise enough funds to purchase on behalf of the Library and its cardholders the Mango Languages Database. The project is two-fold:
     (1) to raise enough to begin an annual subscription
     (2) to raise the remaining amount needed to fund a lifetime subscription. Hammond residents and any HPL cardholder would have 24/7 access via smartphone, tablet or PC to language learning software, including more than 60 foreign language ouses and 17 English as a Second Language courses, international foreign films, and more at no cost!
