Blood Pressure Screenings - (No May event) Laura Lovell from North Shore Health Centers performs blood pressure checks on the last Monday of the month.
Golden Tones: Put a Little Step in Your Spring - Sat, May 23 from 12-1 p.m.
The Golden Tones perform Motown, doo-wop and other classic hits.
Waldorf Theatre Company- Twelfth Night - Thurs., May 28 at 6:30 p.m. This college troupe returns with another 45-minute adaptation of a Shakespearean classic. The performance is free, and a free will offering is accepted.
Summer Reading Signup - Sat., May 30 during library hours
Summer Reading is for all ages! Six program levels serve newborns through adults. Read books and be eligible to win cool prizes! ADULT THEME: "Escape the Ordinary"
Friends of the Library Half Price Sale - Sat., May 30 from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Pick up bargains in books, magazines, movies, and music.
Local Author Fair - Sat., May 30 from 12 to 3 p.m.
Local authors exhibit, sell their books, and read from their works. Authors cover a variety of genres, from children's books to fantasy, science fiction, mystery, romance, horror, memoir, and more. Click here for a list of participating authors.
(Authors- interested in displaying? A table is $30. Table fees benefit the Hammond Public Library Foundation. Space is limited to 25 tables, of which only 8 tables remain. Also, a limited number of time slots remain in which authors may perform short readings. Authors handle their own sales. Novel Conversations Book Group - Mon., June 1 at 6:30 p.m.
We'll talk about Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. This is the story of Olympian Louis Zamperini, who was taken prisoner during World War II. All are welcome to attend. Copies of the book are available for checkout.

Free Computer Classes
Location: Computer Lab

Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
Mouse Basics:
Tues., June 2 at 2 p.m.
Mon., June 8 at 11 a.m.
Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.
Internet Basics:
Mon., May 18 at 2 p.m. Tues., June 9 at 2 p.m. Mon., June 15 at 11 a.m.
An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with a computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
Email Basics:
Mon., June 1 at 2 p.m. Mon., June 22 at 11 a.m.
Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
Word Basics:
Mon., June 8 at 2 p.m. Tues., June 23 at 2 p.m.
Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
Windows 8 Basics:
Mon., June 1 at 11 a.m. Tues., June 16 at 2 p.m.
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.
Banners in Word
Mon., June 22 at 2 p.m.
Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!
Intro to Excel
Mon., May 18 at 11 a.m. Tues., June 23 at 6 p.m. Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.
PowerPoint

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.
Letters & Resumes

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Youth Services is busy planning SUPER Summer Reading Programs. Join us for the following programs in May, and check back soon for a calendar full of exciting activities. Summer Reading, "Every Hero Has a Story," begins on Saturday, May 30.
Kids' Drive-In (All children under 14 are welcome) Tuesday, May 26 at 6 p.m.
Join us for an indoor drive-in movie! Create your own "car" to sit in and enjoy a few short movies. Bring your blanket, too, to make yourself comfortable! Popcorn will be served while supplies last.

 Hammond Public Library Foundation About the Foundation: The purpose of the Hammond Public Library Foundation is to promote the development, expansion, and improvement of the Hammond Public Library facilities, services, and materials and to aid and assist in all facets of Hammond Public Library operations and for other charitable and educational purposes within the Library.
Our current project is to raise enough funds to purchase on behalf of the Library and its cardholders the Mango Languages Database. The project is two-fold: (1) to raise enough to begin an annual subscription (2) to raise the remaining amount needed to fund a lifetime subscription. Hammond residents and any HPL cardholder would have 24/7 access via smartphone, tablet or PC to language learning software, including more than 60 foreign language ouses and 17 English as a Second Language courses, international foreign films, and more at no cost!
