Tennis Tips - Sat., May 2 at 12 noon 
 
Join us in the parking lot as Eddie Lopez of the USTA shows you how to improve your serve, in time for summer fun. Details are with Roscoe Woods at (219) 931-5100, x 329. (In case of rain, we'll meet in the Community Room.)

 

ACME Pawn Pushers Chess: Mondays 11 a.m.-2 p.m. & second Saturday 1-4 p.m.
Regular meetings are open to all; all skill levels are welcome. All May sessions feature Open Chess, Fortress Chess, and the Chess Pieces. Upcoming topics are:

Novel Conversations Book Group - Mon., May 4 at 6:30 p.m.
We'll talk about The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. A middle-aged bookseller mourning his lost wife, a feisty publisher's rep, and a charmingly precocious abandoned child come together on a small island off the New England coast in a novel of love and second chances. All are welcome to attend. 
Copies of the book are available for checkout.  

Welcome to the World of Music - Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.: May 6, 13, 20 & 27

Free music lessons for grade 6 through adult. Limited number of keyboards available. Please bring a pencil and paper to each lesson. 

 

Songwriting Class - Wed., May 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 7 to 8 p.m.
This 4-part songwriting class is led by Rich Boban. Get those ideas out of your head and onto paper! For details or to register, contact Mary Schons at (219) 931-5100, x327.
 
Old Time Radio Program - Thurs., May 7 at 7 p.m.
Those Were The Days Radio Players recreate old time radio shows, complete with sound effects. They perform The Magnificent Montague: Boo Boo/Foo Foo, and the suspense drama, Call Me at Half Mast. Details are with Mary Schons, (219) 931-5100, x327.
 

Stitching In The Stacks - Thurs., May 14 at 3:30 p.m.
Interested in knitting or crochet? Come join us! All experience levels welcomed.

 

Digital Downloads Open House - Fri., May 15 from 10-11 a.m.

Enjoy magazines, eBooks, audiobooks and more with HPL's downloadable digital content! Need a demonstration? Not sure how to get started? Bring your device to a Digital Downloads Open House, and our staff will help you get started.

Laura Lovell from North Shore Health Centers performs blood pressure checks on the last Monday of the month. 

 

Golden Tones: Put a Little Step in Your Spring - Sat, May 23 from 12-1 p.m. 

The Golden Tones perform Motown, doo-wop and other classic hits.

 

Waldorf Theatre Company- Twelfth Night - Thurs., May 28 at 6:30 p.m.
This college troupe returns with another 45-minute adaptation of a Shakespearean classic. The performance is free, and a free will offering is accepted.

 

Summer Reading Signup - Sat., May 30 during library hours

Summer Reading is for all ages! Six program levels serve newborns through adults.
 
Read books and be eligible to win cool prizes!

Friends of the Library Half Price Sale - Sat., May 30 from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 

Pick up bargains in books, magazines, movies, and music. 
 

Local Author Fair - Sat., May 30 from 12 to 3 p.m.

Local authors exhibit, sell their books, and read from their works. Authors cover a variety of genres, from children's books to fantasy, science fiction, mystery, romance, horror, memoir, and more.

(Authors- interested in displaying? A table is $30. Table fees benefit the Hammond Public Library Foundation. Space is limited to 25 tables, of which only 8 tables remain. Also, a limited number of time slots remain in which authors may perform short readings. Authors handle their own sales. Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.  Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
 
Mouse Basics: Mon., May 11 at 2 p.m.

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

 

Internet Basics: Mon., May 18 at 2 p.m. 

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with a computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.
 

Email Basics: Tues., May 12 at 2 p.m.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. 
  

Word Basics: Tues, May 12 at 6 p.m.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.  

  

Windows 8 Basics: No May class   
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Intermediate and advanced classes last approximately 2 hours and are designed to sharpen your existing skills. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic word processing is required to attend these sessions. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Word 2 - Tues., May 19 at 2 p.m. 

Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

 

Word 3 - Tues., May 26 at 2 p.m.

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.
 
 

Banners in Word - No May Class

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

 

Intro to Excel - Mon., May 18 at 11 a.m.
 
Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

  

PowerPoint - Tues, May 19 at 6 p.m.

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

 

Letters & Resumes - Mon., May 11 at 11 a.m.

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Celebrate National Cartoon Week by drawing your own!

Join us to watch Matilda and see how the girl genius deals with the world around her.

Celebrate Friendship Month by making a friendship bracelet for your friends! 

 

Kids' Drive-In (All children under 14 are welcome) Tuesday, May 26 at 6 p.m.

Join us for an indoor drive-in movie! Create your own "car" to sit in and enjoy a few short movies. Bring your blanket, too, to make yourself comfortable! Popcorn will be served while supplies last.

Book Sale Room is open during library hours. The library accepts donations of books, magazines, movies, and music. Just bring them to the library during regular hours.

Hammond Public Library Foundation
About the Foundation:
The purpose of the Hammond Public Library Foundation is to promote the development, expansion, and improvement of the Hammond Public Library facilities, services, and materials and to aid and assist in all facets of Hammond Public Library operations and for other charitable and educational purposes within the Library.

Seven Hammond residents serve as a Board of Directors on a volunteer basis:
  • Carol Odom, president (HPL trustee)
  • Mischelle Henry, vice president (Hammond resident)
  • Warren Ellis, secretary (Hammond resident)
  • Carol Willias, treasurer (Hammond resident)
  • Dr. Gary Jones (HPL Leasing Corp.)
  • David Palkovich (Friends of HPL)

Our current project is to raise enough funds to purchase on behalf of the Library and its cardholders the Mango Languages Database. The project is two-fold:
     (1) to raise enough to begin an annual subscription
     (2) to raise the remaining amount needed to fund a lifetime subscription. Hammond residents and any HPL cardholder would have 24/7 access via smartphone, tablet or PC to language learning software, including more than 60 foreign language ouses and 17 English as a Second Language courses, international foreign films, and more at no cost!
