Did you know that the Friends sell...
  • Science Fair kits? The kit contains a trifold presentation board, lettering, clip art, and a glue stick. These are great for science or history fairs. They're $9.50, available at the front desk.
  • TASC (formerly GED) study guides? For just $20 you can have your own guide from which to study, highlight important paragraphs, or take notes.

Are you a local author? HPL's second Local Author Fair runs Sat., May 30 from 12-3 p.m. A table is $20 until April 30; $30 after April 30. Table fees benefit the Hammond Public Library Foundation. Space is limited to 25 tables, and half of those are already reserved. Also, a limited number of time slots are available in which authors may perform short readings from their works. Novel Conversations Book Group - Mon., May 4 at 6:30 p.m.
We'll talk about The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. A middle-aged bookseller mourning his lost wife, a feisty publisher's rep, and a charmingly precocious abandoned child come together on a small island off the New England coast in a novel of love and second chances. All are welcome to attend. 
Copies of the book are available for checkout.   

Songwriting Class - Wed., May 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 7 to 8 p.m.:

Old Time Radio Program - Thurs., May 7 at 7 p.m.
Those Were The Days Radio Players recreate old time radio shows, complete with sound effects. They perform The Magnificent Montague: Boo Boo/Foo Foo, and the suspense drama, Call Me at Half Mast. Details are with Mary Schons, (219) 931-5100, x327.

The Golden Tones perform Motown, doo-wop and other classic hits.

 

Waldorf Theatre Company- Twelfth Night - Thurs., May 28 at 6:30 p.m.
This college troupe returns with another 45-minute adaptation of a Shakespearean classic. The performance is free, and a free will offering is accepted.

Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.  Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
 
Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with aa computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Email Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Word Basics:

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Windows 8 Basics:    
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Word 3 (formerly Advanced Word) - estimated class time 2 hours

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.

Banners in Word - estimated class time 2 hours

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

Intro to Excel - estimated class time 2 hours 

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

PowerPoint - estimated class time 2 hours

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Family Life in the Civil War 

Thurs., April 30 at 5:30 p.m.: This year is the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. Learn about what it was like to be a kid during that time, and make a Civil War craft.
 

Youth Services is busy planning SUPER Summer Reading Programs. Join us for the following programs in May, and check back soon for a calendar full of exciting activities. Summer Reading, "Every Hero Has a Story," begins on Saturday, May 30.

Kids' Drive-In (All children under 14 are welcome)

Join us for an indoor drive-in movie! Create your own "car" to sit in and enjoy a few short movies. Bring your blanket, too, to make yourself comfortable! Popcorn will be served while supplies last.

 

Reading Tutoring / Tutor de Lectura

The Library offers FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service. Call Youth Services for more information.
