Greetings!
STARTING FEB. 14: A SWEETHEART DEAL FOR DVDs Starting Sat., Feb. 14, there will no longer be a charge to borrow DVDs. Also, for DVDs that had a 2-day loan period, that time is extended to 7 days. Fines for late DVDs will be $1 per day, per DVD, with a maximum fine of $28 per DVD.

ADULT WINTER READING (through Jan. 31): Check out a book, audiobook or downloadable e-book or audiobook, and be eligible to enter a drawing to win a gift basket of winter goodies. (To receive credit for downloads, please go to 2nd floor Info Services before removing the download from your device.)
SAT., JAN. 24 at 10 a.m.: ROBY SPEEDWAY Auto racing historians, Jerry Murawski & Stan Kalwasinski, discuss this historic auto track which was near Wolf Lake.
WED., JAN. 28 at 2 p.m.: WILLS & POWERS OF ATTORNEY: If you should die or become incapacitated, are your loved ones provided for? What about your wishes? Attorney Meghann LaBadie explains some simple options.
THURS., JAN. 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: HEALTH INSURANCE SIGNUP: Community HealthNet staff help you sign up for health insurance via the Affordable Care Act.
BESSIE COLEMAN PORTRAYAL: NOTE NEW DATE THURS., FEB. 19 at 6:30 p.m.: Learn about pioneer African American aviator, Bessie Coleman, in this one woman show by Bessie's great niece, Gigi Coleman! (We had originally announced this for Feb. 26.)

Free Computer Classes Location: Computer Lab http://www.hammond.lib.in.us/computerclasses.htm
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills. Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
Mouse Basics:
Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.
Tues., Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. OR 6 p.m.
An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

E-mail Basics:
Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. Mon., Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. Tues., Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.
Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. Tues., Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. OR 6 p.m.
Windows 8 Basics:
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. No February class

Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Word 3 (formerly Advanced Word) - estimated class time 2 hours
Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts. No February class
Banners in Word - estimated class time 2 hours
Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

Homeschooling and the Library
Fri., Jan. 30 at 11 a.m.: Begin the year by visiting the Library! Join us to learn how we can help you and your homeschoolers and to participate in a Scavenger Hunt. All ages are welcome, but much of the program is geared toward ages 6 - 13.
Are You Superstitious? Good Luck! (Ages 6-13) Fri., Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.: Learn quirky things that people believe, and play games that test your superstitious ways.
Children's Book Discussion Thurs., Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.: Join us as we discuss The Middle of Somewhere by J. B. Cheaney. Books will be available in late January. All ages are welcome, but much of the program is geared toward ages 10-13.
Imagine a Reading Wonderland - Winter Reading (ages 0-13) Read books to earn prizes throughout the month of February. Visit Youth Services to learn more and to sign up for Winter Reading.
Reading Tutoring / Tutor de Lectura
The Library offers FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service. Call Youth Services for more information.
