SCIENCE FAIR BOARDS AVAILABLE: The Friends of the Library sell trifold corrugated presentation board kits for $9.50. Each kit includes a board, repositionable letters and titles, clip art and glue stick.

 

ADULT WINTER READING (through Jan. 31): Check out a book, audiobook or downloadable e-book or audiobook, and be eligible to enter a drawing to win a gift basket of winter goodies. Discussion: International Book-ings
Wed., Jan. 14 at 1 p.m.

Discuss Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. Set in South America and based (loosely)
on a real-life terrorist event that took place in Peru in 1997, this novel balances the themes of love and crisis. Joined by no common language except music, hostages and captors forge unexpected bonds.
Copies of the book are available for checkout. 

 

Roby Speedway Memories & Stories

Sat., Jan 24 at 10 a.m. Join auto racing historians, Jerry Murawski and Stan Kalwasinski, in a look back at the old Roby Speedway. Jerry and Stan have added a lot of new stories and photos.

Racing enthusiasts are welcome to attend and reminisce. 

 

Wills and Powers of Attorney  

Wed., Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. 

An attorney can help you prepare not only for your death, but also for the possibility that you should become ill or incapacitated. While there are expensive solutions for these possibilities, wills and powers of attorney are surprisingly affordable options that help to preserve family harmony during stressful periods.  Spend a surprisingly lighthearted hour with us, learn something new, and get your questions answered by local attorney Meghann Labadie.

Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.  Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
 
Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Tues., Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. OR 6 p.m.

 

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

E-mail Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Word Basics:

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Windows 8 Basics:    
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.

Banners in Word - estimated class time 2 hours

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

Wed., Jan. 21 at 4 p.m.: The party is over, and it is time to pick up your stuffed animal. Join us to see what they did at the Library. Parents, bring a camera if you want to take a picture of your child with their stuffed animal and friends.

Homeschooling and the Library

Fri., Jan. 30 at 11 a.m.: Begin the year by visiting the Library! Join us to learn how we can help you and your homeschoolers and to participate in a Scavenger Hunt. All ages are welcome, but much of the program is geared toward ages 6 - 13.

 

Are You Superstitious? (Ages 6-13)
 
Fri., Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.: Learn quirky things that people believe, and play games that test your superstitious ways.

 

Children's Book Discussion
Thurs., Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.: Join us as we discuss The Middle of Somewhere by J. B. Cheaney. Books will be available in late January. All ages are welcome, but much of the program is geared toward ages 10-13.


Imagine a Reading Wonderland - Winter Reading (ages 0-13)
 
Read books to earn prizes throughout the month of February. Visit Youth Services to learn more and to sign up for Winter Reading.

 

Reading Tutoring / Tutor de Lectura

The Library offers FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service. Call Youth Services for more information.
