Discuss Decked with Folly, by Kate Kingsbury. The Pennyfoot Hotel is decked out in holiday style, but when one of Cecily's candlesticks disappears, she realizes someone is lacking in Christmas spirit. Also, a former employee has been found dead in her duck pond. He hasn't worked at the Pennyfoot in years, but his ex-wife is still their head maid - and now she heads the naughty list of suspects.

Along the Calumet River in Illinois & Indiana, presented by Cynthia Ogorek

The public is invited to this joint meeting of the Hammond Historical Society & the Friends of the Library. Ogorek, an historian and author, explains the history and importance of the river. Copies of her books are available to purchase. There are refreshments and door prizes. Each group accepts new or renewing members. (Join the Friends or renew your Friends membership to take advantage of a special Friends-only Half Price Sale that day, following the meeting.)

You loved them so much this summer, we asked for an encore! The Golden Tones perform rock, Motown, and holiday classics in this free 1-hour show. Join us for a toe-tapping, jolly good time!

Discussion: International Book-ings

Discuss Simple Courage: The True Story of Peril on the Sea, by Frank Delaney. 

In Dec. 1951, laden with passengers and cargo, the freighter S.S. Flying Enterprise steamed from Europe toward America when she hit the eye of a storm. In the space of 28 hours, the ship was slammed by two rogue waves more than 60 feet high. Delaney writes of the bravery and resolve of the captain to not abandon the ship, and to save the passengers, crew and cargo and bring it into port. Copies of the book are available for checkout. 

 

Expungement Law in Indiana
Thurs., Dec. 11 from 3 to 4 p.m.
If an arrest, charge or conviction has made it difficult to obtain a job, housing, loan, etc., you may be eligible to expunge your record. Attorney Lisa Beck explains the law, and how one may benefit.

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.  Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
 
Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

E-mail Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Word Basics:

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Windows 8 Basics:    
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Word 3 (formerly Advanced Word) - estimated class time 2 hours

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.

Banners in Word - estimated class time 2 hours

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

Tues., Dec. 2 at 6 p.m

 

Intro to Excel - estimated class time 2 hours 

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

PowerPoint - estimated class time 2 hours

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

Letters & Resumes - estimated class time 60-90 minutes

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Teen Winter Reading!
December 1-30
You can win prizes for reading! Each book gets you an entry into the prize drawing. So start reading!

  • For teens in grades 7-12.

  • Books (which includes graphic novels, audiobooks, and Playaways) must be checked out from the Hammond Public Library with a valid library card.

  • When you finish a book, stop by the Information Services Desk on the 2nd floor and fill out an entry form for the drawing.

  • There will be a mini-drawing, held on Friday, December 19th, for a $10 Target gift card.

  • The grand prize drawing will be held the first week of January, 2015. This year's prize is a $25 Best Buy gift card.

Teen Book Club

Thurs., Dec. 4 at 4 p.m.

Show your love of books and discuss what you're reading with other teens.

Little Listeners (Ages 3 through 5)

Help Find Sprinkles, our Elf on the Shelf (ages 6-13)

The Library offers FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service. Call Youth Services for more information.

Membership: The Friends accept new members. Print the membership form found on the website above; fill it out, and mail with your check.

 

Book Sale Room is open during library hours.  

The library accepts donations of books, magazines, movies, and music. Just bring them to the library during regular hours.

Meeting: Sat., Dec. 6 at 10 a.m.

The Friends and the Hammond Historical Society conduct a joint meeting. Author, Cynthia Ogorek, speaks on "Along the Calumet River in Illinois and Indiana." Copies of her book will be available for purcha se.

Both groups accept new members at this program, which is free and open to the public. **Friends members on that day may take advantage of a special half price sale following the meeting.
