JOBS READY SERVICE PROGRAM series is Oct. 13-31


 
HPL will offer a three-week series of programs that will focus on motivation, researching prospective employers, creating resumes and cover letters, and interview preparation. Each program builds upon those

of the previous week. Pick up a flyer of programs and register at the Circulation Desk. If you have questions, please contact the Executive Director, Mrs. Rene L. Greenleaf, at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 305.

 

LIBRARY ADVOCACY COMMITTEE meets Oct. 21

 

The Advocacy Committee meets Tues., Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m Interested community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on HPL services for the future.


 

TERMINAL TOWN exhibit through Tues., Oct. 28

 

HPL is pleased to host "Terminal Town," an exhibit recognizing the past 75 years of Chicago's history as a transportation hub. The exhibit is based on a new book by Dr. Joseph Schwieterman, director of DePaul University's Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.

 

The interactive exhibit features a Terminal Town quiz, along with contests and other ways to participate. Take the quiz; submit a photo to the contest; submit your story of traveling to Chicago; nominate a deserving person; watch the film clips showcasing Chicago's transportation terminals.

Dr. Schwieterman speaks at HPL on Thurs., Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. (Copies of the book are available that night for $18.)

 

Contest submissions are due Sat., Oct. 25 at 10 a.m.  For official rules, see the website, www.terminaltown.org

 

Winners are announced at a closing ceremony on Tues., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., at which people have an opportunity to win prizes.

Discussion: Novel Conversations
Mon., Oct.  6 at 6:30 p.m.

Discuss The Baker Street Letters by Michae Robertson. Reggie is thrilled when he learns that his new office is where famous sleuth Sherlock Holmes used to ply his trade. However, when he starts to receive mysterious mail, written for Holmes, his excitement turns into intrigue. As Reggie's brother begins to investigate one of the letters, he inexplicably disappears. Now, Reggie must find his brother while simultaneously solving a murder case.

Terminal Town Exhibit, Discussion, Contests, and Events 

  • Oct. 1-28: Terminal Town exhibit may be viewed during library hours
  • Thurs., Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m.: Dr. Joseph Schwieterman, author of Terminal Town, discusss Chicago's role as a transportation hub. Copies of the book may be purchased for $18.
  • Sat., Oct 25 at 10 a.m.: Deadline to submit entries for photos, story, nominations, and quiz.
  • Closing Ceremony: Tues., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.  You'll have one last opportunity to view the exhibit. Also, winners of the Terminal Town quiz and photo contests will be announced. Those attending have a chance to win door prizes!

Job Ready Service Program

 

If you're looking for a job, we encourage you to register for this three-week series of programs that will focus on personal assessment, motivation, researching prospective employers, creating resumes and cover letters, and interview preparation. Attending all sessions is necessary because each session builds upon what was presented the week before. We will help you to evaluate your need to improve skills. Then, at the end of the three-week session, we'll channel you to other governmental service centers that provide resources to help build on these skills.  Register at the Circulation Desk. Free Computer Classes 

Location: Computer Lab

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.  Classes are FREE, but space is limited. Registration is required. Call (219)931-5100 and ask for Carol Williams or ext. 345, to check availability and to reserve your slot.
 
Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Tues., Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.

 

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Tues., Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.
 

E-mail Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills. 
Tues., Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.

 

Word Basics:

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Windows 8 Basics:  
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more. Must be familiar with the computer mouse and have basic keyboarding skills.

Intermediate and advanced level classes are designed to sharpen your existing skills. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic word processing is required to attend these sessions.

Word 2 - estimated class time 2 hours

Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Word 3 (formerly Advanced Word) - estimated class time 2 hours

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.

Banners in Word - estimated class time 2 hours

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

Mon., Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. 

 

Intro to Excel - estimated class time 2 hours 

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

PowerPoint - estimated class time 2 hours

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

The Library and Calumet College of St. Joseph offer FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service. Call Youth Services for more information.
