We're in the last few weeks of Summer Reading.
Celebrate with us on one of the following dates:
  • Sat., Aug. 16 at 2 p.m.: HPL Reader's Theater performs "Mr. Popper's Penguins." The public is invited to this free performance. Youth have been creating sets and publicity, making scenery, and rehearsing lines.
  • Sat., Aug. 30 from 1 to 3 p.m.: Mad Scientist Party (for ages 6 to13 who participated in Summer Reading). Play games, perform experiments, and have fun!
  • Tues., Sept. 2 at 4 p.m.: Teen End-of-Summer Party &  Book Discussion is for teens who completed the Summer Reading Program at least once. Prize winners will be announced but they don't need to be present to win.

Take advantage of these promotions, good through Sat., Aug. 30:

  • Hammond residents who check out 5 books* receive 1 free DVD checkout (*good on print books only; not on audiobooks or e-books. Also, not valid for reciprocal borrowers.)

"Literary Elements" Adult Summer Reading 

Sign up for the program, and receive a reading log. Read or listen to any book,
e-book or audiobook you choose (must be checked out from HPL), and mark your titles on the log. Bring the log when you return books. (For e-books, please bring your device to show Information Services staff before returning the e-book.) Turn in your completed log to receive an entry into the drawings. The more logs you complete, the more chances to win (up to 12 logs). Mini-drawings are held July 11, July 25, and Aug. 8. All logs must be turned in by Sat., Aug. 30 to receive credit and be entered into a Grand Prize drawing (winner announced by Sept. 6).

Discussion: International Book-ings

International Bookings will discuss The Blackhouse by Peter May. The first book in the Lewis Trilogy, this mystery series is set on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. When a murder on the island has the hallmarks of a killing on the mainland, Edinburgh detective and native islander, Fin Macleod, is dispatched to see if the two deaths are connected.

Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.
 
NOTE: THERE ARE NO COMPUTER CLASSES IN AUGUST.
CLASSES RESUME IN SEPTEMBER. SEE BELOW FOR SOME NEW CLASSES!  
 
Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Windows 8 Basics:  
Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more.

Intermediate and advanced level classes are designed to sharpen your existing skills. Familiarity with keyboard/mouse and basic word processing is required to attend these sessions.

Word 2 - estimated class time 2 hours

Improve your documents by learning more about text, spacing, paragraph formatting, borders, bullets and more.

Word 3 (formerly Advanced Word) - estimated class time 2 hours

Go beyond text. We'll focus on working with images and shapes. Also touched upon with be text boxes and charts.

Banners in Word - estimated class time 2 hours

Creating a banner using Word is easier than you think. If you can format text, adjust margins and work with images and shapes, you can do this!

Intro to Excel - estimated class time 2 hours 

Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

PowerPoint - estimated class time 2 hours

Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

Letters & Resumes - estimated class time 60-90 minutes

We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you.

Teen Summer Reading, "Spark a Reaction" (ends Sat., Aug. 30)
For each program you attend, your name is entered into the drawing for a Best Buy gift card! You must be signed up for the program in order to be entered into the drawing. All supplies provided. Programs are for teens in 7th-12th grades.

Decorate your locker wit magnets you make yourself.

Youth Summer Reading, "Fizz, Boom, Read!" (ends Sat., Aug. 30)

Early Literacy (Ages 0 - 2): Monthly activity sheets contain early literacy skill building activities. Parents are asked to complete at least 20 activities to get a prize. If you complete all three activity sheets, you receive a grand prize.

 

Read to Me (Ages 3 - 5): Each child gets a reading log. For every 10 books that are read to a child, the child earns a prize. The grand prize goal is to have 50 books read to them.

 

Primary (Grades k - 3) and Intermediate (Grades k - 4) Every 100 pages read earns the child 1 point. For every 5 points a child earns, they get a prize. Once a child earns 30 points, they get a grand prize. Contact Youth Services for details.

 

All books must be library books, but books can be read  in the library if the child does not have a card. We encourage children to read at their appropriate level.
