Hammond Public Library has programs galore, as well as two new services in which you may be interested:
  
WIRELESS PRINTING: Our public computer users have been getting used to reserving computers and printing via our print management software. Now we offer wireless printing for those using their laptops or tablets at HPL! Ask the Info Services staff for assistance, or pick up an instructional sheet in the library information kiosk near the Circulation Desk, or on the second floor.   
 
E-BOOKS AND NOW, STREAMING VIDEO! Click the Overdrive e-books icon on our website to view what
e-books and streaming video movies are now available. Videos have a 7-day checkout.

Waldorf College Theatre Company returns this year with another of The Bard's favorites, about the universal theme of love and its complications.

 

Moonlight in Duneland
Mon., June 9 from 2-3 p.m.
Join Steve McShane and Ronald S. Cohen of IU Northwest as they discuss the South Shore Railroad's 1920s marketing campaign. Afterward, they will sign copies of their book, Moonlight in Duneland, which will be available for purchase.

Sat., May 31: Three big events at HPL!

  • Friends of the Library Half-Price Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pick up bargains on books, magazines, movies and music. Excludes specially priced items and sets. Also visit our Local Author Fair and Art Walk that day!
     
  • Local Author Fair from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
    More than 20 local authors will be here to display and sell their books. Many authors will be doing short readings from their works. Learn more about the talent in our midst, and purchase a gift for a graduation or other special occasion.
     
     
  • Hammond Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    HPL galleries display the mixed media paintings of Dawn Diamantopoulos, who received a bachelor's in fine arts from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. 
    After your visit to the HPL galleries and our Local Author Fair and Friends Sale, be sure to visit the other art venues around town: Paul Henry's Gallery; South Shore Arts Substation No. 9; Hammond INnovation Center; Towle Theater; The Blue Room Cafe; Flex Studio; SideCar Gallery; Hammond Arts Center; It's Just Serendipity; Mark Anderson Illustration; and White Ripple Gallery.

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.

 Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Advance Classes are between 2-2.5 hours in length. Registration is required. You must have taken the basic classes, or have familiarity with the computer mouse, as well as basic computer knowledge.

 

Advanced Word: If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.

Intro to Excel: Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

PowerPoint: Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more. 
Tues., June 17 at 6 p.m.

 

Letters & Resumes: Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You will  customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of 10 cents per page.

Reading Tutor available

The Hammond Public Library and Calumet College of St. Joseph are offering FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service! Call Youth Services for more information.

Be on the lookout for awesome programs about science. You also earn prizes for the books you read over the summer. Four levels serve newborns through grade 6. Summer Reading begins on June 2!
