Hammond Health Matters: HPL will offer programs and services to help residents keep well, because Hammond health matters to us!
  • The Alzheimer's Association presents two upcoming programs:
    - Tues., April 29 at 6 p.m.: Legal and Financial Matters. A diagnosis of Alzheimer's can change plans for you or your family. Learn what steps to take and decisions to make when faced with Alzheimer's.
    - Sat., May 17 at 10 a.m.: The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer's. Have you ever wondered if you were having just a moment of forgetfulness, or a sign of something more? Learn the difference at this free program.
  • Under pressure: If you haven't had your blood pressure checked lately, or if you need your blood pressure monitored regularly, staff from North Shore Health Center offer free blood pressure checks. Mark your calendar for one of the dates below, when blood pressure checks are performed from 1 to 3 p.m.:

Local Author Fair
 
Sat., May 31 from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
Visit local authors as they display and sell their books. Authors who wish to display at the event may email for a table registration form.
 

  

 

Free Computer Classes

Location: Computer Lab

Space is limited; registration required at (219) 931-5100, ext. 345

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.

 Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Become familiar with the new Windows 8 layout, launch apps, move between screens and more.

Advance Classes are between 2-2.5 hours in length. Registration is required. You must have taken the basic classes, or have familiarity with the computer mouse, as well as basic computer knowledge.

 

Advanced Word: If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.

Intro to Excel: Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more. 

(No  advanced class in May)

 

PowerPoint: Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.

Letters & Resumes: Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You will  customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of 10 cents per page.

Thursday, April 24 at 4 p.m., Look at those blooming May flowers! Join us to learn about flowers in our area, and craft a flower out of thread.

Thurs., May 6 at 4 p.m.: Mother's Day is just around the corner. Join us to make Mother's Day cards for the special mothers in your life. Supplies will be provided

 

After School Movie (Ages 6 - 13)

Wednesday, May 7 at 4:00 p.m., Frozen: Will Anna and Kristoff be able to save the kingdom from an eternal winter? Join us to see if they can find Elsa before it's too late. Popcorn will be served while supplies last.

 

Family Fun Hour

Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m., April is National Poetry Month. Join us to read different poetry styles, and try your hand at your own!

 

Reading Tutor available

The Hammond Public Library and Calumet College of St. Joseph are offering FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service! Call Youth Services for more information. 

 

Coming Soon

 Youth Services staff is busy preparing for Summer Reading! This year's theme is "Fizz, Boom, Read!" Be on the lookout for awesome programs about science. You also earn prizes for the books you read over the summer. Registration for Summer Reading begins on June 2!
