Celebrate MoneySmart Week with two programs:
Tues., April 8 at 12 noon: Taking Control of Your Finances

is presented by Consumer Credit Counseling Services.

Learn how to handle your personal finances. 

 

Wed., April 9 at 12 noon: Bank On It! Centier Bank staff explain available services, and how to build a good relationship with a financial institution. You'll learn to:

*   Identify the major types of insured financial institutions.

*   Identify five reasons to use a bank.

*   Describe the steps involved in opening a bank account.

*   Describe two types of deposit accounts.

*   Identify additional bank services that come with deposit accounts.

  

Attend a new book discussion
Wed., April 9 at 1 p.m.:. International Book-ings features foreign authors or locales. You may even see movie tie-ins! This new series is on the second Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. The group will discuss Still Life, by  Louise Penny.

Thurs., April 10 at 2 p.m.: "Steel Giants"
Stephen McShane and Gary Wilk of IU Northwest discuss Gary and East Chicago as seen through the eyes of photographers from U.S. Steel and Inland Steel. Copies of the book Steel Giants will be

Thurs., April 10 at 6 p.m.: A Night of Poetry - Yusuf Ali El
The author of Raw Tears, he has a master's degree from Governors State University. He is an author, poet, and spoken word performer. Copies of his books will be available for purchase.

    Thurs., April 10 at 2 p.m.

    A Night of Poetry with Yusuf El
    Thurs., April 10 at 6 p.m.

    Celebrate National Poetry Month as author, poet, and spoken word performer, Yusuf Ali El, performs his works. He is a Hammond resident, and received his MA from Governors State University. His latest books include Raw Tears, a book of love and relationship poetry; and Ryme Time for Growing Minds (a book for children).  

     

    Hammond Health Matters (new series)
     
     Tues., April 29 at 6 p.m.: "Legal and Financial Planning for the Future."

    A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can change plans that families have for the future. The program covers legal and financial information to consider as the disease progresses and future plans are made. 

     

    Sat., May 17 at 10 a.m.: The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer's

    explains the difference between normal memory loss and Alzheimer's. Risk factors for Alzheimer's, the diagnostic process, and the changes that the brain goes through as Alzheimer's progresses are some of the topics covered. You'll also see video clips of doctors, patients and loved one who are caring for people with Alzheimer's disease.  

     

    Free Computer Classes

    Basic Classes: 
    Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.

     Mouse Basics: 

    Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

    Internet Basics:

    An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

    E-mail Basics:

    Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

    Word Basics:

    Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

    Advance Classes are between 2-2.5 hours in length. Registration is required. You must have taken the basic classes, or have familiarity with the computer mouse, as well as basic computer knowledge.

     

    Advanced Word: If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.

    Intro to Excel: Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

    PowerPoint: Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more. 
    Tues., April 22 at 6 p.m. (No advanced class in May)

     

    Letters & Resumes: Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You will  customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of 10 cents per page.

    Wednesday, May 7 at 4:00 p.m., Frozen: Will Anna and Kristoff be able to save the kingdom from an eternal winter? Join us to see if they can find Elsa before it's too late. Popcorn will be served while supplies last.

     

    Family Fun Hour

    Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m., April is National Poetry Month. Join us to read different poetry styles, and try your hand at your own!

     

    Homeschool Day

    Friday, April 11 at 11 a.m., How much do you know about our state? Join us to learn facts and trivia about Indiana. 

     

    Reading Tutor available

    The Hammond Public Library and Calumet College of St. Joseph are offering FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service! Call Youth Services for more information. 

     

    Coming Soon

     Youth Services staff is busy preparing for Summer Reading! This year's theme is "Fizz, Boom, Read!" Be on the lookout for awesome programs about science. You also earn prizes for the books you read over the summer. Registration for Summer Reading begins on June 2!
