Affordable Care Act informational session
 
Fri., March 28 from 1-4 p.m. Staff from North Shore Health Center will help you understand coverage, and enroll in the system. You will need: Social Security numbers (or document numbers of legal immigrants); birth dates; pay stubs, W-2 forms or "wage and tax" statements; policy numbers for any current health insurance; and information about any health insurance that you or your family could get from your jobs.

 

Online Voting Registration Class: The last day to register to vote before the May primaries is April 7. Learn how to use IndianaVoters.com to register to vote, check your status, and to register other Hoosiers to vote. The class is free. An Indiana driver's license or state ID is helpful, but not necessary to attend. Contact Mary Schons for more information, (219) 931-5100, ext. 327.

    A Night of Poetry with Yusuf El
    Thurs., April 10 at 6 p.m. Celebrate National Poetry Month as author, poet, and spoken word performer, Yusuf Ali El, performs his works. He is a Hammond resident, and received his MA from Governors State University. His latest books include Raw Tears, a book of love and relationship poetry; and Ryme Time for Growing Minds (a book for children).

    Hammond Health Matters (new series)
     
    CANCELLED: Tues., April 1:"Know the 10 Warning Signs" (in Spanish)

    The following two programs are still planned:

    Tues., April 29 at 6 p.m.: "Legal and Financial Planning for the Future."

    A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can change plans that families have for the future. The program covers legal and financial information to consider as the disease progresses and future plans are made. 

     

    Sat., May 17 at 10 a.m.: The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer's

    explains the difference between normal memory loss and Alzheimer's. Risk factors for Alzheimer's, the diagnostic process, and the changes that the brain goes through as Alzheimer's progresses are some of the topics covered. You'll also see video clips of doctors, patients and loved one who are caring for people with Alzheimer's disease.  

     

    Northwest Indiana's Steel Giants  

    Thurs., April 10 at 2 p.m. 

    Stephen McShane and Gary Wilk of IUN, co-editors of Steel Giants, present the history of the steel industry and the towns as seen by photographers from U.S. Steel and Inland Steel. After the program they sign copies of the books, which will be available for purchase.  

     

    Moonlight in Duneland: The South Shore Line's 1920s Marketing Campaign
    Mon., June 9 at 2 p.m. 
    Stephen McShane and Ronald D. Cohen of IUN, coauthors of Moonlight in Duneland, present a history of the railroad and those iconic South Shore posters. will sign copies of the books, which will be available for purchase. 

     

     

    Free Computer Classes

    Basic Classes: 
    Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.

     Mouse Basics: 

    Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

    Internet Basics:

    An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

    E-mail Basics:

    Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

    Word Basics:

    Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

    Advance Classes are between 2-2.5 hours in length. Registration is required. You must have taken the basic classes, or have familiarity with the computer mouse, as well as basic computer knowledge.

     

    Advanced Word: If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.

    Intro to Excel: Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more. 

    Tues., April 15 at 6 p.m.

     

    PowerPoint: Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.  (no class in March)
    Tues., April 22 at 6 p.m.

     

    Letters & Resumes: Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You will  customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of 10 cents per page.
