Many new programs are planned for 2014, including the following new series:
  • A new series, "Hammond Health Matters," starts Tues., March 11 as the Alzheimer's Association presents "Know the 10 Warning Signs." 
  • A series of history-themed programs is presented throughout the year by Stephen McShane of the Calumet Regional Archives at IU Northwest.
  • A brand new book discussion series kicks off in April! "International Book-ings" will take place on the second Wednesday of each month from 1-3 p.m., and feature authors from around the globe. The first discussion on April 9 features Still Life, by French-Canadian author, Louise Penny Books will be available for checkout by mid-March.
  • 1-2-3 Read to Me monthly story time is a pilot partnership between Lake Area United Way, FedEx Hammond, Hammond Reads, and HPL. Registration for the series of three programs is required. See under Youth Services for details.

Special Programs

In Their Own Words: A Program of African American History
 
Thurs., Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. View the documentary, Unchained Memories, in which actors read from slave narratives collected in the late 1930s. Afterward, area residents read from narratives of former slaves who settled in Northwest Indiana. A community conversation will ask, "What narrative will you leave?" Music is provided by students from the Hammond Academy of Performing Arts.

 

"Dollar-a-Day Boys: A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps"
Sat., March 15 at 10 a.m. Author/filmmaker, Bill Jamerson, tells stories and sings original songs about the CCC, a Depression-era federal work program that built roads and state parks. Jamerson will sign copies of his historical novel. This program is cosponsored by the Hammond Historical Society and Friends of the Library. It  is free and open to the public.

 

Online Voting Registration Class: The last day to register to vote before the May primaries is April 7. Register to vote, check your status, and learn how to register other Hoosiers to vote using Indianavoters.com! The class is free. Hammond Health Matters (new series, starts March 11)
The first four programs are presented by the Alzheimer's Association:

Tues., March 11 at 11 a.m.:"Know the 10 Warning Signs." Understand the difference between age-related memory loss and Alzheimer's and what to do if you or someone you know has signs of the disease. View video footage of real people who are living with the early stages of dementia and their families addressing fears and myths associated with Alzheimer's disease. 

Tues., April 1 at 11 a.m. "Know the 10 Warning Signs" is presented in Spanish.
Tues., April 29 at 6 p.m.: "Legal and Financial Planning for the Future."
A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can change plans that families have for the future. The program covers legal and financial information to consider as the disease progresses and future plans are made.  

Sat., May 17 at 10 a.m.: The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer's

explains the difference between normal memory loss and Alzheimer's. Risk factors for Alzheimer's, the diagnostic process, and the changes that the brain goes through as Alzheimer's progresses are some of the topics covered. You'll also see video clips of doctors, patients and loved one who are caring for people with Alzheimer's disease. 
  

Presented by Stephen G. McShane of the Calumet Regional Archives:

Thurs., April 10 at 2 p.m.: "Moonlight in Duneland: The 1920s Advertising Campaign of the South Shore Line." Hear a history of the railroad and those iconic South Shore posters. McShane will sign copies of Moonlight in Duneland, which he coauthored with Ronald Cohen.

Thurs., June 12 at 2 p.m.: "Steelmakers and Steeltowns: Building the Mills and Company Towns of Gary and East Chicago" is the history of the steel industry and the towns as seen by photographers from U.S. Steel and Inland Steel. McShane signs copies of Steel Cities, which he co-authored with Gary Wilk.

Thurs., Sept. 11 at 2 p.m.: "Populating the Region: An Ethnic and Racial Mixing Bowl."

 

Free Computer Classes

Basic Classes: 
Classes are 60 to 90 minutes in length. Registration is required. E-mail, Internet and Word Basic classes require you to be familiar with the computer mouse, and to have beginning keyboarding skills.

Mouse Basics: 

Learn about using the mouse; common computer terms; how to work with menus and forms; how to copy and paste; more. No experience required to attend.

Internet Basics:

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website you want. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:

Tues., March 25 at 6 p.m. 

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Advance Classes are between 2-2.5 hours in length. Registration is required. You must have taken the basic classes, or have familiarity with the computer mouse, as well as basic computer knowledge.

 

Advanced Word: If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.

Intro to Excel: Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.

PowerPoint: Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.  (no class in March)

 

Letters & Resumes: Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You will customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of 10 cents per page.

Thursday, March 13 at 6 p.m., If you are thinking about sending your child to preschool in the fall, this is the program for you! Participating preschools will be here to provide you with the necessary information, and to answer any of your questions. Join us in the Community Room anytime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

 

1-2-3 Read to Me (Kindergarten through 3rd grade)
Sat., March 29, April 26 and May 31 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Kids will hear stories read by volunteers from FedEx Hammond, and they will do an activity together. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to attend. Please register by March 13 by visiting Youth Services. The program is sponsored by Lake Area United Way; FedEx Hammond; Hammond Reads; and HPL.

 

Reading Tutor available

The Hammond Public Library and Calumet College of St. Joseph are offering FREE reading tutoring to students in kindergarten-12th grade. This is a walk-in service! Call Youth Services for more information.
