Many things are happening, so mark your calendars!

February is Library Lover's Month. Newborns through age 13 may participate in HPL's Youth Winter Reading Program, "Hug a Good Book." Read books for a chance to win great prizes. Sign up in Youth Services.
  
Mon., Feb. 17: HPL is closed for Presidents Day.
  
Thurs., Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m.: HPL presents "In Their Own Words: A Program of African American History." We'll view an HBO documentary in which actors read from slave narratives recorded during the Great Depression. Afterward, area residents read from narratives of former slaves who lived in Northwest Indiana, and hear a song from students at the Academy for Performing Arts at Morton High School. What narrative will YOU leave? Join us for the viewing, the music, and a community conversation.
  
Through March 1, our galleries display wood-burning art by Mario Haro. Work may be viewed on the first and second floor during library hours.

Tues., March 11 at 11 a.m.: A new program series, Hammond Health Matters, begins as the Alzheimer's Association presents "Know the 10 Warning Signs." (To be presented in Spanish on Tues., April 1.)

 

Thurs., March 13 at 2 p.m.: Stephen McShane from the Calumet Regional Archives presents "Moonlight in Duneland: The 1920s South Shore Advertising Campaign"

 

Sat., March 15 at 10 a.m.: Hammond Historical Society & Friends of the Library host Bill Jamerson, "Dollar-A-Day Boys: A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps."

 

Wed., March 26: Free class explains how to register to vote using IndianaVoters.com

In Their Own Words: A Program of African American History

Thurs., Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Join us for a special viewing of the HBO documentary, Unchained Memories, in which actors read from slave narratives collected during the Great Depression. Afterward, local residents read from the narratives of former slaves who lived in Northwest Indiana. Thanks to the Friends of the Library for their support.


Novel Conversations book discussion

March is Women's History Month. Discuss Still Missing: Amelia Earhart and the Search for Modern Feminism, by Susan Ware. Copies of the book are available for checkout about two weeks before the discussion.

Free Computer Classes

Basic classes: Please allow 60-90 minutes. 

Mouse Basics: No experience required to attend this class. 
 
Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more.

Internet Basics: Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required. 

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:  Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:  Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Advanced classes: please allow 2 - 2.5 hours. 
 
Familiarity with keyboard/mouse, and basic computer knowledge, are required

  •  Advanced Word:     Mon., March 3 at 2 p.m. 
     
    If you already use Word, but don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.
  •  Intro to Excel:   Tues., Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. 
    Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.       
  • PowerPoint: Tues., Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
     
    Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips into slides, tips when making your presentations, and more.     
  • Letters & Resumes: Tues., Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. 
     
    Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You'll customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB flash drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. You may print additional copies at the cost of 10 cents per page.

Winter Reading - Hug a Good Book

It's Library Lover's Month! A good way to celebrate is to Hug a Good Book! Winter Reading for all ages begins Feb. 1, and it runs through the entire month! Read books for a chance to win great prizes! Sign up in Youth Services.

 

Reading Tutor

Starting Feb. 10, free reading tutoring for kindergarten through 12th grade is offered at these times:

Monday and Wednesday: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Friday: 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Saturday: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
