WINDOWS 8.1 COMING: Public computers will not be available next Tues., Jan. 14, as we install new computers featuring the Windows 8.1 operating system. You're invited to learn about the computers, as well as our new e-book service, at a Technology Open House on Wed., Jan. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room.  

E-BOOKS: Did you receive an e-reader or tablet as a gift? Attend an E-Book Open House session to see how to download e-books on your mobile device. Feel free to bring your mobile device to the open house.

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT enrollment runs through March 31. Staff from Community HealthNet visit HPL on Tues., Jan. 28 from 1-4 p.m. to help people complete ACA applications for health insurance. Appointments are not needed. Details are with the Head of Information Services at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 327.

Basic classes: Please allow 60-90 minutes. 

Mouse Basics: No experience required to attend this class. 
 Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more.

Internet Basics: Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required. 

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:  Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:  Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Advanced classes: please allow 2 - 2.5 hours. 
 Familiarity with keyboard/mouse, and basic computer knowledge, are required
to attend these sessions.     

  •  Advanced Word:     Tues., Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. 
         If you already use Word, but don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.
  •  Intro to Excel:   Tues., Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. or Tues., Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. 
    Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.       
  • PowerPoint: Tues., Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. or Tues., Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
         Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips into slides, tips when making your presentations, and more.     
  • Letters & Resumes: Tues., Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. or Tues., Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. 
         Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You'll customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB flash drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. You may print additional copies at the cost of 10 cents per page.

Sat., Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.: Learn about the musical styling of the great Duke Ellington. 

 

Winter Reading - Hug a Good Book

It's Library Lover's Month! A good way to celebrate is to Hug a Good Book! Winter Reading for all ages begins Feb. 1, and it runs through the entire month! Read books for a chance to win great prizes! Sign up in Youth Services.
