WINDOWS 8.1 COMING: Within the next few weeks, new public computers will be installed, featuring the Windows 8.1 operating system. You're invited to a demonstration at a Technology Open House on Wed., Jan. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room.

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT enrollment runs through March 31. Staff from Community HealthNet visit HPL on these dates to help people complete ACA applications for health insurance. (*Dates are revised from Dec. 13 e-news):  

  • Tues., Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and 1-4 p.m.
  • Tues., Jan. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Novel Conversations book discussion

The group will discuss The Cloister Walk, by Kathleen Norris. Copies of the book are available for checkout about two weeks before the discussion. 

 

Calumet Regional Archives
Thurs., Jan. 16 from 2-3 p.m.
Stephen McShane, archivist/curator of the Calumet Regional Archives at IU Northwest, explains what is in the collection and how to access it. This program

is for the public, as well as for librarians.

Did you get an e-reader or tablet as a gift? Stop in our Computer Lab during any of the sessions below, and find out about electronic books available for reading online or through download to your mobile devices. Feel free to bring your e-reader or mobile device to this free, one-hour session.

Free Computer Classes

Basic classes: Please allow 60-90 minutes. 

Mouse Basics: No experience required to attend this class. 
 Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more.

Tues., Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.

 

Internet Basics: Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required. 

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:  Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:  Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Mon. Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.

 

Advanced classes: please allow 2 - 2.5 hours. 
 Familiarity with keyboard/mouse, and basic computer knowledge, are required
to attend these sessions.     

  •  Advanced Word:     Tues., Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. 
         If you already use Word, but don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.
  •  Intro to Excel:   Tues., Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.
    Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.       
  • PowerPoint: Tues., Jan. 21 at 6 p.m.
         Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips into slides, tips when making your presentations, and more.     
  • Letters & Resumes: Tues., Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
         Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. You'll customize a resume template or build your own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB flash drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. You may print additional copies at the cost of 10 cents per page.

  • December 2-30: Teen Winter Reading!
    You can win prizes for reading! Each book gets you an entry into the prize drawing, to be held the first week of     January. This year's prize is a $25 gift card to Best Buy. So start reading!
> For teens in grades 7-12.
> Books (which includes graphic novels, audiobooks, and Playaways) must be checked out from HPL with a valid library card.
> When you finish a book, stop by the Information Services Desk on the 2nd floor and fill out an entry form for the drawing.

  • Thurs., Jan. 2 at 4 p.m.: Teen Book Club
    What book are you reading right now? Come to Teen Scene and discuss what you're reading with other teens! Prizes for those who attend, and your name will be entered into the drawing for Teen Winter Reading. 
     

  • Thurs., Jan. 16 at 4 p.m.: Teen Crafternoon
         Join us in Teen Scene for craft time. All supplies provided; just bring your creativity, and take home what you make!      

  • Thurs., Jan. 23 at 4 p.m.: Teen Friendship Bracelet
         Come to Teen Scene to make a fun and easy bracelet for a friend. All supplies provided.

Jan. 23 - Celebrate the letter B"! Join us for a story about things that start with the letter "B." Please bring something that starts with the letter "B" to show.

 

Little Listeners (Ages 3 - 5): 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. on these Tuesdays:

Jan. 7: Brrr... this month we will learn about winter. Join us for stories, songs, and fingerplays about snow. Please wear play clothes as our craft will be messy!

Jan. 21: Join us for stories, songs, and fingerplays about polar bears.

 

Kids Can 2! (Ages 6 - 8): Tues., Jan. 28 at 4 p.m.
 It's Z Day! It's a new year, but let's start backwards! Play games, listen to tales, and talk about people and places that start with the letter "Z."

 

Tween (Ages 9 - 13)

LEGO Club: Tues., Jan. 14 at 4 p.m.
 The library has Legos just waiting to be built into something cool! 

 

Just for Tweens: Thurs., Jan. 30 at 4 p.m.
 Spin The Wheel of Fun! Solve puzzles, do funny things and earn prizes.

 

School Age (Ages 6 - 13)

Homeschool Day: Fri., Jan. 17 at 10 a.m.
 HPL 101: Learn about the library, our collection, and our services.  

 

Family Fun Hour: Sat., Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.

It's Trivia Day! As a family, test yourselves on facts and figure you think you know, and earn a certificate of Uselessology.
