  • HPL will begin loaning e-books as of Mon., Nov. 11! Staff will present several E-Book Open House sessions to show you how to download e-books on your mobile device. See the dates under Adult Programming, below.
     
  • The Friends thank everyone who supported their Oct. 7 fundraiser at Five Guys in Munster, raising $192.39!  
     
  • On Oct. 24 we dedicated the Lois Bell Room and the James Bell Room. Lois was vice president of the Friends of the Library until her death in 2012. Her husband, Jim, was an avid reader.
     
  • The Friends of the Library and Hammond Historical Society conduct a joint meeting this Sat., Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. Charles Bradsky, project manager for INDOT, presents an update on the replacement to the Nine-Span Bridge. The meeting is open to the public.
     
  • HPL accepts donations of nonperishable food items for Greater Hammond Community Services' Thanksgiving Food Baskets. Please bring items to the Circulation Desk through Nov. 22.

HPL Presents: Gettysburg Thurs., Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
Nov. 19 is the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. Join us as Marc Chase, reporter for The Times and founder of the South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail, takes us on an armchair travelogue of Gettysburg and the Region soldiers who fought there.

HPL has e-books starting Nov. 11! Stop in our Computer Lab during any of the sessions below, and find out about electronic books available for reading online or through download to your mobile devices. Patrons are welcome to bring their reader, tablet or other mobile devices to the session.

Mouse Basics: No experience required to attend this class. 
 
Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more.

Internet Basics: Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required. 

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

E-mail Basics:  Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:  Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Familiarity with keyboard/mouse, and basic computer knowledge, are required

  •  Advanced Word:     Tues., Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. OR Mon., Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.: 
     
    If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.
  •  Intro to Excel:   Tues., Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. OR Mon., Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.:
    Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.       
  • PowerPoint: Tues., Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. OR Mon., Dec. 16 at 2 p.m.
     
    Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more.     
  • Letters & Resumes: Tues., Nov. 26 at 6 p.m.; no session in December
     
    Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. Attendees to this class will customize a resume template or build their own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of 10 cents per page.

    We'll have board games (chess, Sorry, Yahtzee, and more) set up in Teen Scene for you and your friends.
     
  • December 2-30: Teen Winter Reading!
    You can win prizes for reading! Each book gets you an entry into the prize drawing, to be held the first week of
    January. This year's prize is a $25 gift card to Best Buy. So start reading!
> For teens in grades 7-12.
> Books (which includes graphic novels, audiobooks, and playaways) must be checked out from the Hammond Public Library with a valid library card.
> When you finish a book, stop by the Information Services Desk on the 2nd floor and fill out an entry form for the drawing.
  • Thurs., Dec. 5 at 4 p.m.: Teen Book Club
    What book are you reading right now? Come to Teen Scene and discuss what you're reading with other teens! Prizes for those who attend, and your name will be entered into the drawing for Teen Winter Reading.

    Come to the Community Room to learn how to make fun and easy soaps! They make great gifts. All supplies included.

LEGO Club: The library has a lot of Legos just waiting to be built into something cool! Tues., Nov. 5 at 4 p.m.: Come to this program to see who can build the fastest!

Thurs., Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.: Do you like to hang up pictures of your family and friends?  Make a photo board to display your photos in style!  All supplies will be provided.

Thurs., Dec. 12 at 4 p.m.: Ever wonder what to do with old, damaged books? Create something out of them! Join us to recycle an old book into something new.

Letters to Santa

Throughout December, visit Youth Services to write a letter to Santa. Drop your letter into our special mailbox for it to be delivered in time for Christmas! Special holiday paper will be provided.
