  • Second floor public access computers will not be available from Sat., Aug. 10 through Mon., Aug. 12 due to carpet replacement.
  • Summer Reading is in its final weeks. Finish those books and be sure to bring them in for credit before the deadline of Sat., Aug. 31. Adult and teen reading logs must be turned in by 4 p.m. that day. Children's reading logs are due before our 5 p.m. closing time.
  • HPL is closed Mon., Sept. 2 (Labor Day)
  • HPL Advocacy Committee wants you to share your ideas and input. Join us at 5:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: August 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 22,

    • Hammond Public Library board of trustees meets Tues., August 27 at 5:30 p.m., lower level Schlesinger Board Room.
       
    • The board of the Friends of the Library meet Tues., Aug. 13 at 1 p.m. in Room AV-1 at the library.
       
    • The public is invited to the Reader's Theater performance of "How I Became a Pirate" on Sat., Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. The kids have worked hard on all aspects of putting on a show. Come support their summer efforts!
       
    • Join us Thursday, Sept. 12 at 5:30 p.m. for a Kickoff to Hispanic Heritage Month, as we honor the Hammond Hispanic Community Committee on its 20th anniversary.
      Presentations will be made to HHCC and its founding board members. Music and refreshments are also featured, and HHCC promotes its new logo as well as the Oct. 5 Latino Resource Fair. Please join us!

SUMMER READING runs through Aug. 31. The Adult program is  Groundbreaking Reads. Check out books or audio-books from HPL, and write the titles on your reading log.  When you complete a log, you'll be entered into a drawing for prizes! See the SUMMER READING page for all the details.

 

Novel Conversations book discussion

Mon., Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
The group discusses Kate Morton's novel, The Distant Hours.
Books may be checked out about two weeks before each meeting. 

 

Kickoff to Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month

Thurs., Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
HPL honors the Hammond Hispanic Community Committee and its founding board members during HHCC's 20th anniversary year. The program features presentations, refreshments and entertainment.

Basic classes: Please allow 60-90 minutes.
NOTE: There are no public computer classes in August.


Mouse Basics: 
No experience required to attend this class. 
 
Learn about using the mouse, common computer terms, how to work with menus and forms, how to copy and paste, and more.

Internet Basics: Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required. 

An introduction to the program that gets you on the Internet along with how to browse or go directly to a website. Internet searching and printing options are also discussed.

Mon., Sept. 16 at 11 a.m.

 

E-mail Basics:  Familiarity with mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Review the layout of web-based e-mail, how e-mail programs are structured and how you can customize your mail storage. We'll cover reading, organizing and sending mail in a hands-on session. E-mail accounts for class use will be provided, so don't worry if you don't yet have your own.

Word Basics:  Familiarity with the mouse and beginner keyboarding skills required.

Learn beginning word processing techniques to get you started on a variety of possible projects. We'll review how to navigate the program, choosing your settings, making changes as you go along or after you've typed your material, inserting a simple graphic and more. A practice project gives you hands-on experience with the program.

Advanced classes: please allow 2 - 2.5 hours. 
 
Familiarity with keyboard/mouse, and basic computer knowledge, are required
to attend these sessions.
 

 

Advanced Word:  Tues., Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.
 
If you already use Word, but just don't feel like you're taking advantage of what it has to offer, this class is for you. Learn about page setup options, formatting, working with graphics, using text boxes, save and print options, and more.

 

  

Intro to Excel:  Tues., Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.
Learn your way around Excel, see how easy it is to store, organize and make the most of your information. We'll review worksheets, cells, data entry, fill options, using formulas, creating functions and more.     

 

 

PowerPoint: Tues., Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. Create photo slide shows and professional presentations quickly and easily! Learn about design themes and slide layouts, inserting graphics and media clips onto your slides, tips to use when making your presentations and more. 

   

 

Letters & Resumes: Tues., Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. Start your next job search with a new cover letter and a freshened resume. We'll discuss the professional way to format a letter, how to create a great cover letter and how to build the best resume for you. Attendees to this class will customize a resume template or build their own resume from scratch. Please bring your information and a USB Flash Drive to save your resume in progress. One copy of your resume may be printed at the end of the session at no charge. Additional copies may be printed at the cost of 10 cents per page.

Summer Reading: BENEATH THE SURFACE 

Check out the SUMMER READING page for details of the Teen Summer Reading Program.   The library offers teen events each week from June through August. See the TEEN PROGRAM PAGE  for details. Teens, for each library program you attend from June through August, you receive an extra entry into the grand prize drawing for a $100 Best Buy gift card.   

  • Thurs., Aug. 22 at 4 p.m.: Teen Notebook Decorating
    Head back to school in style with a notebook you decorate yourself.
     
  • Thurs., Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.: Teen Chip Bag Pouches
    Make a fun pouch with an upcycled chip bag.
     
  • Sat., August 31 at 4 p.m.: Summer Reading Ends
    All reading logs must be turned in by 4 p.m. to receive credit.
     
  • Thurs., Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.: End of Summer Reading Party/Book Discussion. Celebrate the end of summer reading with books and snacks! For teens who completed the program at least once. Prize winners will be announced but they don't need to be present to win. 
     
  • Thurs., Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.: Teen Magnet Making Program.
    Decorate your locker with these cool magnets you make yourself!
     
  • Fri., Sept. 20 at 10 a.m.: Open House for Homeschooled Teens. Find out what services the library has to offer homeschooled teens; learn about the Teen Scene and Teen Club, and enjoy some booktalks.

Youth Services offers FOUR separate youth Summer Reading programs:
  • Early Literacy (newborns through age 2)
  • Read to Me (ages 3-5)
  • Primary (kindergarten through grade 3)
  • Intermediate (grades 4-6)

It's Mud Pie Day! Join us for muddy stories and songs, and to make mud pies! *Please dress the children in play clothes!

Tues., Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. - Who lives on a farm? Join us for stories, songs, and a craft all about farm animals!

Tues., Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. - Let's celebrate families! Join us for stories, songs, and a craft all about families.

 

Kids Can 2! (ages 6-8):
 
Tues., Aug. 13 at 1 p.m.:
Let's Get Digging: Wrap up Summer Reading by playing games, enjoying wormy dessert, and designing a fluorescent worm to take home.
 
Tues., Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.: Play Detective with Geronimo! Come along with Geronimo Stilton for activities, games, and crafts.

 

Just for Tweens (ages 9-13):
 
Mon., Aug. 12 at 2 p.m.:
The Dirt of It All - Wrap up Summer Reading by playing games, dancing, and decorating a wall-worm for your home. 

Mon., Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.: Back to School in Style - Are you always losing pencils? Join us to design a pencil case out of a recycled water bottle. We will also be decorating pencils to put in your new case!   

 

Tween Lego Club (ages 9-13):
 
Wed., Aug. 14 at 2 p.m.
 
Tues., Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
The library has a lot of Legos just waiting to be built into something cool! Come to this program to see who can build the fastest! 

 

Tween Science Club (ages 9-13):
 
Thurs., Aug. 15 at 2 p.m.: Have you ever tried panning for gold? Join us to give it a try! We will also have a show-and-tell of our rock collections, and make final observations of our plants from the first week.

  

Reader's Theater (ages 6-13):

Wed., Sept. 4 at 4 p.m., Lilo & Stitch. Would you adopt an unusual pet? Join us to see what happens when a little girl from Hawaii adopts an extra-terrestrial! Snacks will be served while supplies last. 

  

End-of-Summer-Reading Bash
Sat., Aug. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.: Celebrate the end of Summer Reading with a bash! Play games, make crafts, and have fun.
