  • HPL staff visit schools in May to promote the 2013 youth Summer Reading Program, "Dig Into Reading." Programs serve all ages, from infants through adults. Summer Reading runs from June 1 -Aug. 31.
     
  • Note: reading tutoring is suspended until further notice, pending the availability of students from Calumet College of St. Joseph.
     
  • HPL is closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, 2013.
     
  • HPL welcomes a new trustee, Carol A. Odom, who was appointed by the County Council.

GRANTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

   

Key Transitions in Postsecondary Education 

Grant range:  $400,000 - $800,000.    
Deadline:  May 24, 2013

 

USA Funds is offering a grant to organizations that help students successfully

transition into and succeed in postsecondary education.

 

The Key Transitions in Postsecondary Education grant funds programs that support recent high school graduates and adult learners in their transition to postsecondary education.  Services and support can start during senior year of high school, and special emphasis is placed on students transitioning from the first year to the second year of study at a community college. Excellence in Teaching Technology and Engineering 

Grants: $2,000
Deadline: Dec. 1, 2013 

 

The Foundation for Technology and Engineering Educators, in partnership with Pitsco/Hearlihy & Company, is accepting applications for technology and engineering education programs at any grade level.

 

Through its Excellence in Teaching Technology and Engineering  grant program, the foundation will award grants of $2,000 each to K-12 technology and engineering teachers to encourage the integration of a quality technology and engineering education program within their school's curriculum. American Society of Plant Biologists Education Foundation Fund
Grant range:  $50,000   
Deadline:  June 6, 2013 

 

The ASPB Education Foundation seeks proposals from ASPB members to support education
and outreach activities that advance knowledge and appreciation of plant biology.
  
The American Society of Plant Biologists funds programs that provide education and outreach activities advancing the teaching and learning of plant biology.  Eligible applicants include

Seed grants of up to $500 will be awarded to high-quality educational programs designed to

help children and youth understand and appreciate the world through hands-on projects that improve the environment in their schools and communities. Details are on the foundation's

Fuel Up to Play 60

Grant: up to $4,000
Deadline: June 4, 2013 

 

Fuel Up to Play 60, an in-school nutrition and physical activity initiative of the National Dairy Council and the National Football League, is accepting applications for school programs that promote healthier eating and more physical activity opportunities. The program is designed to empower students to lead by making healthy decisions and taking action for change.

Grants of up to $4,000 will be awarded to K-12 schools to help students and adults select and implement activities that result in long-term changes in student nutrition and physical activity. Funds may be used to support a range of different program-related activities found in the Fuel Up to Play 60 Playbook or a custom activity developed by the school. Details are found here.
