Dear ,

HPL staff are visiting schools in May to promote the 2013 youth Summer Reading Program, "Dig Into Reading." There are two big changes planned for this year!

1) We're expanding the program an entire month! Summer Reading will run from June 1 -Aug. 31. Weekly programs take place from June 10-Aug. 17.

2) We're adding new participation levels. Instead of having just a Listener and a Reader program, we've tailored it for different age levels:
Early Literacy
Preschool
Primary (Kindergarten through 2nd grade)Tween (3rd through 6th grades)

If you'd like the staff to perform a skit at your school, please contact Youth Services at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 336.

We'll also have Summer Reading for teens and adults, as usual! Everyone can participate!
Parents can check out one of our Early Literacy Programs:
  • Babies and Books, for infants and caregivers
  • Tiny Tots Toddler Time, for walking toddlers
  • Little Listeners (ages 3-5 and caregiver)
  • 2s and 3s (ages 2 and 3, and caregivers)
Those in the early grades are welcome at Kids Can 2! (ages 6-8)

Tween Programs are for ages 9 to 13:
  • LEGO Club
  • Just for Tweens

School-Age programs are for ages 6 to 13:

  • After-School Movie
  • Stories for All
  • Family Night
  • Homeschool Day

GRANTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Just one-fourth of low-income students know how to find and apply for postsecondary financial aid, and a majority of their parents request help in learning the basics about preparing and applying for education after high school.

You can help these students and families fill the gaps through the practical skills and useful information you will learn during the Postsecondary Counseling Institute, to be held June 18-19, 2013, in Indianapolis.

The event is designed especially for school counselors, mentoring organizations, and all youth workers who help middle and high school students prepare for postsecondary education.  Workshop topics include:
  • Cultivating a postsecondary-going culture in your school or youth organization;
  • Understanding financial aid;
  • Parent, school and community partnerships that bolster postsecondary readiness;
  • Navigating and understanding college admissions standards;
  • All you need to know about preparing college applications;
  • Dual credit - earning college credit while you're in high school; and
  • Apprenticeships, certificates and workforce credentials;
 All participants receive a free digital copy of the College Board's College Counseling Sourcebook, which contains sample documents, templates and worksheets that you can use with students to help them prepare for education after high school.

Continuing education credits are available, including from the Indiana Department of Education.  Registration fee: $100. Register here.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is accepting proposals from organizations, primarily those that consider themselves to be networks of teachers, to support implementation of Common Core State Standards in literacy and mathematics.

Through its Shifting into High Gear: Accelerating the Common Core Through Teacher Networks initiative, the foundation will award grants ranging from $100,000 to $250,000 to organizations working to accelerate implementation of the Common Core across a robust teacher network. Priority will be given to innovative approaches which create scalable solutions that travel across networks quickly and broadly.

To be eligible, organizations must be considered tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In addition, as part of their core mission, organizations must actively engage large numbers of teachers around educational topics, issues, practices, research, and/or reform. For eligibility and application guidelines, see the Gates Foundation Web site.

Spencer Foundation Invites Proposals for Research on K-8 Classroom Instruction

The Spencer Foundation is accepting applications for research projects that explore how student performance data informs classroom instruction.

Through its Evidence in the Classroom initiative, the foundation will award grants ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 for research projects that investigate how K-8 teachers use student performance data for instructional decisions and how organizational and individual factors affect that use. Past projects have covered a range of topics, from data use patterns through an online data management system to the effectiveness of capacity-building interventions.

To be eligible, principal investigators must have earned a doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or appropriate experience in an education research-related profession. PIs also must be affiliated with a college, university, research facility, school district, or cultural institution that is willing to serve as fiscal agent if a grant is awarded.

Preliminary proposals must be received by June 11, 2013. Upon review, selected principal investigators will be invited to submit full proposals, which will be due on September 4, 2013. Decisions on full proposals will occur within four months of their submission.

The foundation will hold informational conference calls on April 22 and May 9 at 11:00 a.m., Central Time. Participation in a call is not required in order to submit a proposal.

See the Spencer Foundation Web site for eligibility and application guidelines.
