"Waddle into Reading," the Youth Winter Reading program, ends February 28. Read books to earn small prizes, and enter to win a family activity basket loaded with cool stuff.
HOLIDAY HOURS HPL is closed Tues., March 12 for a staff inservice.
TWO SPECIAL PROGRAMS IN MARCH
- Thurs., March 14 at 6:30 p.m.: Author Meggie Tolkland presents "So You Want to Write." Tolkland explains how to develop dedication, planning, and focus in the process of becoming a writer. She discusses publishing myths, including the excuse of writer's block and predators in the writing world. Following her lecture, she will answer questions and sign copies of her two releases, both part of her Mayhem urban romance fantasy series. So that we may plan for materials, please register at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 310.
- Sat., March 16 at 2 p.m.: The Hammond Historical Society and the Friends of the Library present a free program, "Democracy in the Making: The Open Forum Lecture Movement." This is also the title of a new book by Arthur Meyers, director of the Russell Library in Middletown, CT and former director of HPL. From the 1920s to the 1940s, Temple Beth-El in Hammond was part of a national movement to sponsor lectures on race and social issues. Among the famous folks who came to Hammond were James Weldon Johnson (author of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing); W. E. B. DuBois, founder of the NAACP; poet Carl Sandburg; attorney Clarence Darrow; and even Eleanor Roosevelt. Join us as Arthur Meyers, director of the Russell Library in Middletown, CT and former director of HPL, presents this chapter in Hammond's (and America's) history. He also signs copies of his book, which will be available for purchase.
