The Hammond Public Library is having a Preschool Roundup on Thurs., Jan. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parents who wish to send their children to preschool in the fall are invited to see what the library has to offer parents and preschoolers. Five local preschools will display. Information is with Youth Services at (219) 931-5100, Ext. 336.

HPL has increased the number of youth and teen programs we offer. Here is a rundown of HPL's upcoming early literacy programming:

Babies and Books (infants and parent/caregiver)
Thursdays, Feb 7 & 21 at 10 a.m.
  
Tiny Tots (walking toddlers and parent/caregiver)
Thursdays, Feb. 7 & 21 at 10:30 a.m.
  
2s and 3s (ages 2-3 are parent/caregiver)
Thursday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. (theme: friendship)
Thursday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. (theme: pets)
  
Little Listeners (ages 3 to 5 and parent/caregiver)
Tues., Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. & 1 p.m.: Friendship
Tues., Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. & 1 p.m.: Pets
  
Kids Can 2 (ages 6-8)
Tues., Feb. 19 at 3:45 p.m.: Feed the Birds
We recognize that "tweens" (ages 9-13) may consider Youth programs to be "babyish," yet
they're not ready for our teen programs, which are for students in grades 7-12. Here are
upcoming  programs for tweens:   
  • LEGO Club
     
    Tues., Feb. 5 at 3:45 p.m.
     
  • Just for Tweens: Touchdown!
     
    Fri., Feb. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
    This football-themed party offers games, trivia, and xBox 360.
    Registration is required with Youth Services, (219) 931-5100, Ext. 336.
There are plenty of programs for school-age youth (ages 6-13):
  • YOUTH WINTER READING (Feb. 1-28): "Waddle Into Reading
    Read books to earn small prizes, and enter to win a family activity basket loaded
    with cool stuff.
  • After-School Movie: Wed., Feb. 6 at 3:45 p.m.
    Watch "Finding Nemo" and enjoy popcorn.
  • Family Night: Thurs., Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.
    "Winter Nights" offers winter stories, crafts and games to warm you up. 
     
  • Homeschool Day: Fri., Feb. 8 at 10 a.m.
    Library Lovers Month: Homeschool parents and children celebrate with
    book talks and fun activities.
     
  • Be a Library Sweetie: Thurs., Feb. 14 at 3:45 p.m.
    Students will make a heart bookmark.
     
  • Stories for All: Thurs., Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.
    Check out the library's new books, and learn new activities.

Do you have some students who could use a little extra help in reading? HPL and Calumet College of St. Joseph offer reading tutoring for K-12th grade. This is a walk-in service.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY FUNDRAISER

 

HALF-PRICE BOOK SALE is Sat., Feb. 23 from 9:30-4:30 at the library. There is no half-price sale in March.
