This week in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin-ELCA

Week of September 7, 2014

We are a church that is energized by lively engagement in our faith and life.

"Our faith is a living, busy, active, mighty thing," said Martin Luther. We continually strive for a deeper understanding of what the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ means for the world. Doing so puts us right where God wants us to be: in the thick of life.

The synod staff will pray for these congregations and rostered leaders during their next weekly staff meeting. We invite you to include them in your prayers this week as well.

Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, Eleva, Jason Clifton

West Akers Lutheran Church, Prairie Farm, Pastor Mark Woeltge

Installations and Ordinations

Kristine Stedje will be ordained by Bishop Rick Hoyme at Central Lutheran in Minneapolis at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 13.

Josh Toufar will be ordained by Bishop Rick Hoyme at Chetek Lutheran, Chetek, at 5 p.m. Saturday, September 13.

Last week the Rev. Donna Rutten was installed to serve at Peace Lutheran, Poplar; the Rev. Jamie Brieske was installed at Hope Lutheran, Eau Claire; and the Rev. Marilyn Crossfield was installed at First and Laketown Lutheran Churches, Cushing.

A warm welcome and blessings to all as they begin their new ministries!

I couldn't have said it better myself!
A big thank you to our friends from the Northeastern Minnesota Synod for allowing us to share the following reflection written by Bishop Tom Aitken on our health and disability insurance from Portico..

Thinking about our health and the cost of health insurance -- a shared journey.

By now you probably know that there will be an 11% increase in Portico's Health and Disability contribution rates for 2015. First, I want to thank THIS SYNOD for its faithfulness in taking the Mayo Clinic Health Assessment each year in numbers that allowed us to decrease rates by 2% each year over the past 5 years. You are to be commended for this. Because our rostered leaders reached 65% participation, congregations received a 2% discount on premiums and our synod received 1% back in wellness dollars to be used for continued healthy leader incentives.

The increase in contribution rates for 2015 is due solely to increased claims. No one is to blame for this, it is what sometimes occurs when an organization takes the health of its entire community seriously and pays out accordingly. Members ought to use health care when it's needed. Still, I know this will increase stress for some. All of us; church councils, pastors, other rostered leaders, and congregations need to be understanding with each other. We bear increased health care costs together.

Sponsoring employers and plan members will be invited to begin Open Enrollment for 2015 starting September 15. At that time, both groups will be able to go online and compare their current costs to projected 2015 costs. Like last year, the synod recommends the Gold+ option. The health contribution rate is designed to share costs between the sponsoring employer and the plan member on an 80/20 basis: 80% is paid by the plan through sponsor contributions, and 20% is paid by plan members through deductibles and additional out-of-pocket costs. Be ready to sign in online at Portico. You'll make 2015 benefit selections on Employerlink ( sponsoring employers) and myPortico (sponsored plan members.) You can read more about all of this at www.porticobenefits.org

Making a difference on "God's work. Our hands." Sunday
"God's work. Our hands." Sunday was an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. On Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, several of the nearly 10,000 congregations of this church gathered to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all of God's people. Here are a few of the photos we have received so far. If you have photos from your congregation that you would like to share, please email them to msoyck-doring@nwswi.org.

Show Your Support for LSS Sunday, October 5

A reminder that you are invited to join LSS in lifting up the shared ministry with your congregation through the LSS Sunday happening across Wisconsin and the UP on October 5 (or another date that fits with your congregational calendar)! LSS Sunday is an opportunity to showcase the work your congregation is doing to serve individuals, families and communities through the innovative, unique and highly regarded programs and services of LSS. LSS will provide a 5-minute video that can be shared with your congregation that day, as well as bulletin inserts, prayer petitions and sermon ideas and stories. As requested and as available, LSS staff members or supporters will join your congregation in worship that day. If you are interested in participating, there is a sign-up available at http://www.lsswis.org/LSS-Sunday-registration and it just takes a few minutes. If another Sunday works better for you, there's a spot in the sign-up form that you can let us know an alternate date for congregation. Please contact Lisa Hassenstab at lisa.hassenstab@lsswis.org or 414-745-0684 with any questions.

Thrifty Theology: Continuing Education Without Crushing Costs

by Pastor Diane Norstad from Faith Lutheran, Balsam Lake

The Choice is Yours: Life Happens by Terrie Chappell

Don't be turned off by the decision theology sound of the title. This book helps people to focus on doing things God's way rather than our own. It's a good book in light of our current culture of self-entitlement.  It's also a good polarity position to the new age religious atmosphere that counts our spirituality as whatever appeals to us rather than what God has chosen for our lives. It's definitely a lay person's read rather than a theological text, but a good book that you may choose to recommend to certain parishioners. This book is not available through the MORE consortium libraries. As of this writing, it is available on Amazon for $10.32 new, $7.95 Kindle or $5.97 plus shipping used.
