Special
Synod Assembly
Edition

This week in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin-ELCA

Week of June 1, 2014

We are a church that is a catalyst, convener and bridge builder.

Our faith calls us to see the world as interdependent. The ELCA has become a force for connection, working across denominations, faiths, organizations and sectors, locally and globally. We're a welcome partner because we respect the perspectives and strengths of others and share a common vision to uphold human dignity.

Walking & Working Together . . . Two Great Events, One Big Weekend!

The 2014 Synod Assembly will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the Davies Center, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The assembly will officially begin at 6:55 p.m. Saturday, however, Walking Together, our annual congregational resource event, will take place from 8:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday (also at the Davies Center). We hope to see many of you there!

Synod Office Hours

We'll be busy packing and loading boxes Friday and there will be lots of post-assembly details to take care of Monday, so the office will be closed both days.

Registration/Check In

Doors will open and registration/check in for Walking Together begins at 7 a.m. Saturday on the third floor of the Davies Center.

Check in for synod assembly opens at 5 p.m. Saturday on the third floor of the Davies Center. Even if you are attending both events, you will need to check in at each event during the specified times.

Parking

Because university parking restrictions do not apply to Saturday and Sunday, you may park in any university lot. However, please do not park adjacent to any red or yellow painted curbs as those are designated as emergency vehicle use only. View map of the campus.

Meals

Your registration fee includes lunch Saturday (if you are attending Walking Together), and brunch Sunday (for synod assembly). Dinner Saturday evening is on your own. You will find many great restaurant choices in the Eau Claire area. Snacks, coffee, water, etc. will be available both mornings.

Dress

We want you to be comfortable during your stay, so casual attire is appropriate. Since we will celebrate Pentecost Sunday, you may want to wear red! The Davies Center is air conditioned.

Worship

We will worship together Saturday at 9 a.m. Kenneth Inskeep from the ELCA churchwide offices in Chicago will preach. Sunday, we will worship at 9 a.m. with Bishop Hoyme preaching. Sunday's worship will also include the installation/blessing of Rev. John Sutherland and Rev. Laurie Skow-Anderson, assistants to the bishop.

Offering

We have been receiving hunger offering checks in the mail prior to assembly. If you have not sent yours yet, you may give it to Gail Brown at registration. Assembly offering will be collected during worship Sunday. It will be donated to the Pastors' Academy, which provides continuing theological education for leaders in our companion synod in Malawi, Africa.

Assembly Voting Members

If you have been chosen by your congregation to be a voting member at assembly, please visit the assembly web page to read the information you will need to make informed decisions. Pay special attention to Information about candidates for synod council and the four resolutions. If you plan to bring a laptop or tablet to assembly, it would be a good idea to download this information. Although the building does have wifi, the number of people trying to access it at one time can provide challenges. You will be given an assembly book that contains the candidate's information as well as information for resolutions 1, 3 and 4. The salary standards information (resolution 2) will not be available in printed form.

Synod Resource Center

Your Synod Resource Center will be at the Walking/Working Together Event. This would be a good time to return resources. Thanks for your cooperation!

We will also have Bibles for sale. If you know how many you need, call this week and we can bring them along: 715-833-1153 or email: bweber@synodresourcecenter.org

Stop and say hello and browse our display!

Prayers Welcomed

Please pray for all those traveling to these events that they may arrive safely. We pray for wisdom and guidance from the Holy Spirit as we walk and work together for the sake of mission in God's world.
