This week in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin-ELCA

Week of January 12, 2014
If you have "God's work. Our hands." photos that you would like to share, please email a digital copy to msoyck-doring@nwswi.org.

We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.

We do God's work in the world--restoring and reconciling communities--not because God needs us to do so, but because our neighbor does. We pursue justice and seek peace no matter how long the journey or wide the chasm.

We Walk Together

The synod staff will pray for these congregations and rostered leaders during their next weekly staff meeting. We invite you to include them in your prayers this week as well.

Bethel Lutheran, Hudson, Pastor Alicia Hilding

First Lutheran, Eau Claire, Pastor Amy Odgren

Off the Grid, Ashland, Pastor Angela Fairbanks

Greg Kaufmann

A Star is Born?

A video starring Rev. Greg and Diane Kaufmann has just been released by Portico Benefits Services. In it, the Kaufmanns explain what it means to live a healthy lifestyle when you have chronic health challenges. Watch this 6 minute video to get some valuable insights.

Speaking of valuable insights, have you completed the 2014 Mayo Clinic health assessment yet? If you (and your spouse, if applicable) participate in ELCA primary health benefits, don't delay. Take stock of your current health strengths and risks. Earn $150 wellness dollars and become eligible for $350 more. Help your organization save 2% on 2014 health contributions.
Take the Mayo Clinic health assessment now.

After you take the health assessment, you will earn an extra $50 in wellness dollars for watching the video!
(Greg quipped that he will be available to sign autographs at the Winter Theological Event!)

Pastor Martin Halom (left) from St. John's in Bloomer, chats with Dr. Jeremy Myers (right) from Augsburg College during a recent workshop at Imagine Together. Thirty teams from around our synod attend the monthly Imagine Together workshops. Dr. Myers also taught at the January Lay School of Ministry.

CORRECTION: Last week, one of the pastors in the "W" photo was incorrectly identified as Rev. Kari Jonas. The pastor was actually Rev. Kathy Ulrich, chaplain at Sacred Heart hospital in Eau Claire.

Global Relationships

ELCA Malaria Campaign ELCA Malaria Campaign

Members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) have contributed $10 million to support the ELCA Malaria Campaign in their effort to raise $15 million by the end of 2015. Through the campaign, ELCA members have joined with companion Lutheran churches and partners in 13 African countries to prevent and treat malaria, educate communities about the disease and more. You have probably heard about the ELCA Malaria Campaign; perhaps you have even helped raise funds to donate to this worthwhile cause. But how much do you know about the work being done?

Did you know?

The ELCA Malaria Campaign funds programs of companion churches and Lutheran partners in education, prevention and treatment of malaria by:

  • providing life-saving health care, including medicine to treat malaria
  • training pastors, church volunteers and health care providers to diagnose and treat malaria
  • teaching people how to protect themselves from the mosquitoes that spread malaria, recognize symptoms and seek treatment
  • distributing insecticide-treated mosquito nets and providing training on proper use
  • providing preventative medication to protect pregnant women and their babies
  • encouraging governments to provide adequate health care and engage in malaria prevention activities
  • supporting community projects to control the environments where mosquitoes breed
  • promoting sustainable livelihoods through participation in village savings and loans groups so that community members can afford mosquito nets, transport and health care
  • gathering people together to discuss the importance of malaria prevention and control
Help spread the word!

If you missed the litanies sent by John Sutherland earlier this month, consider using them now. View Malaria Campaign  litany.
