This week in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin-ELCA

Week of July 28, 2013
All Things New

We are a church that believes Jesus is God's "Yes" to us.

Our lives can be a "Yes" to others. The "Yes" of Jesus Christ compels and empowers us to be open and accessible within any community, within any context.

We Walk Together

September 8 will be a busy day in our synod! How will YOU be involved?

Rev. Rick HoymeBishop's Installation

First, we celebrate the installation of our new bishop, the Rev. Rick Hoyme, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 E. Lexington Blvd., Eau Claire. The service will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, with a reception to follow. We hope that you will join with people from all over our synod to witness this very special occasion.

If you are a rostered leader, you will have reserved seating and are invited to process into the sanctuary. Red is the color of the day. Please send an RSVP to lbartsch@ nwswi.org by August 31 to let us know whether or not you will attend.

"God's work. Our hands." Sunday

September 8 has also been chosen as the day when ELCA members from all over the nation will reach out to serve others. Of course, September 8 is not the only day for congregations to work on these service projects, If you are planning to bring a group to the bishop's installation service, you may want to choose a different day. Either way, we hope that you will involve many people from your congregation in serving others. To learn more and find helpful resources, visit the ELCA website.

Dakota Road

Dakota Road Touches Lives With Their Music

First Lutheran Church, Hayward, hosted a great musical weekend July 20-21, when Dakota Road performed in concert Saturday at the Park Theatre and led worship services Sunday at First Lutheran.

Their music ranged from sacred to silly; and touched people of all ages and walks of life. They have become nationally known for their stirring original music and playful performance style.

"Having Dakota Road present is always a joy and their music and message is always so uplifting for our travels through everyday life," according to Carol Braun, First Lutheran.

"God's work. Our hands." Sunday, a Day Dedicated to Serving

We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. On Sept., 8, 2013, let's join together as 4 million members, nearly 10,000 congregations, 65 synods and the churchwide expression for a dedicated day of service.

Let's clean up neighborhoods, deliver meals, collect supplies for refugees overseas, visit our neighbors or help a child learn to read.

You work every day to welcome your neighbors and make your community a better place. Now let's do it together as one body, using our hands to do God's work of restoring and reconciling communities in Jesus Christ's name throughout the world.

We hope that many of you already have heard about "God's work. Our hands." Sunday and have made or are considering plans to participate. Whether you are just learning about the day of service or knew of it previously, there is a wealth of information about the day at www.ELCA.org/25yearsThe more members and congregations that participate, the greater the witness to our commitment to share God's love among our neighbors.

Global Relationships

  Prs. Bowman and Sutherland

From Pastor Mary Ann Bowman

Absolutely loving the opportunity to teach and be taught in Malawi. Pastor John Sutherland is my teaching partner and each day is amazing as we dig deep into the books of Exodus and Luke. The 50 pastors that have gathered for this academy from all around Malawi are wonderful brothers in Christ. We are so blessed to have this God-given experience.

From Pastor John Sutherland

Our time in Malawi is drawing to a close. The time was incredible beyond words, and I have been truly blessed by this opportunity. We return on Saturday afternoon. We leave here on Friday afternoon Malawi time. It will be over 30 hours in transit, but so worth it

Teaching pastors, Mary Ann Bowman and John Sutherland, are with our companions in Malawi for the Pastors' Academy.

After 6 years of serving with the Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin I am stepping down to begin law school this autumn.
